Filed Oct. 6, 1960, Ser. No. 60,838 2 Claims. (Cl. 15-244) Our present invention relates to a brush designed for use in many different ways such as for example cleaning, painting, polishing and smoothing out the material applied to the surface being treated.

Our main object is to devise a novel brush wherein a novel brush head has a pocket to receive a flexible pressure element which is secured to the brush head and to a handle by novel clamping mechanism.

A further object is to form the brush head of absorbent material in strip form which is folded upon itself with juxtaposed marginal portions secured together to form a pocket closed at its front end and at its sides and open at its rear to receive a pressure element.

A further object is to devise a novel clamping mechanism having opposed clamping plates with a pressure element between them, so that when the clamping plates are in clamped condition by inserting one end thereof into a handle the brush head will be firmly connected with the handle.

With the foregoing and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, our invention comprehends a novel brush.

It further comprehends a novel brush head containing a pressure element, and novel clamping mechanism clamped with the brush head and interlocked with the handle.

For the purpose of illustrating the invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of it which we have found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited, except by the scope of the appended claims, to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.

FIGURE 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of a brush embodying our invention.

FIGURE 3 is an exploded view of the brush head and the clamping mechanism.

Referring to the drawings:

The brush consists of four components, namely the brush head 1, clamping mechanism 2, a pressure element 3 and a brush handle 4.

The brush head 1 is formed of any desired material such as for example plastic, cellulose sponge material, and is preferably resilient and absorbent. As shown, it consists of a strip of flexible and resilient plastic folded upon itself with marginal side portions cemented or otherwise fastened together to form a closed front end,

3,081,475 Patented Mar. 19, 1963 closed side portions, and an open rear end, the latter being open to a pocket 5 in which the pressure element 3 is adapted to be inserted. The pressure element 3 at its rear end is secured between carrying strips 6 by a rivet 7 or in any other desired manner. The flexible pressure element 3 extends between the folds with its sides spaced from the sides of the pocket.

The clamping mechanism 2 is formed of two opposed strips 8 terminating at their forward ends in clamping plates 9 having laterally deflected front flanges 10, which are preferably serrated as at 11. The rear ends of the strips 6 are fixed between the ends of the strips 8 by rivets 12. The pressure element 3 has an integral rearwardly extending tongue flanked by members 6 and 8 and secured thereto by the rivets 12. The clamping plates 9 have inwardly projected stop members 13' formed from them to contact the rear end of the brush head and limit the movement of the pressure element into the pocket of the brush head.

The handle 4 has a tubular portion 14- into which a tubular clamping member 15 extends with opposite sides at the front end bent towards each other to form a slot 16 through which the strips 6 and 8 can be inserted.

The strips 8 being fastened at one end normally flare outwardly, so that when the pressure element is inserted into the pocket of the brush head, the clamping plates overhang the rear end of the brush head. When the strips 6 and 8 are pushed through the slot 16, the clamping plates 9 are compressed against the brush head and the rear portion of the brush head is compressed against the pressure element so that the front portion of the pressure plate is free to flex and bend. The pressure element is in the form of a flat plate and its contour and that of the pocket may vary as desired.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A brush comprising a tubular handle, a sheet of absorbent material folded upon itself forming a brush head with its sides connected to form a pocket having a rear opening, a flexible plate in said pocket extending between said folds and terminating in close proximity to the front folded portion of the absorbent material and with its sides spaced from the sides of the pocket, said plate having strips extending rearwardly of the head clamping members having rearwardly extending strips of reduced width fixed at their rear ends to the rear end of said plate strips, said clamping members being located at opposite sides of said plate strips flaring outwardly therefrom and having clamping heads with flanges directed towards said flexible plate where by when the rear portions of said clamping plate strips are inserted into the handle said flanges clamp the rear portions of the folds of the absorbent material against said flexible plate.

2.. The means defined in claim 1 wherein the clamping heads have portions in rear of said flanges extending towards said flexible plate and contacting the rear end of the brush head to limit the extent of the movement of the flexible plate into the pocket of the brush head.

Claims (1)

1. A BRUSH COMPRISING A TUBULAR HANDLE, A SHEET OF ABSORBENT MATERIAL FOLDED UPON ITSELF FORMING A BRUSH HEAD WITH ITS SIDES CONNECTED TO FORM A POCKET HAVING A REAR OPENING, A FLEXIBLE PLATE IN SAID POCKET EXTENDING BETWEEN SAID FOLDS AND TERMINATING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE FRONT FOLDED PORTION OF THE ABSORBENT MATERIAL AND WITH ITS SIDES SPACED FROM THE SIDES OF THE POCKET, SAID PLATE HAVING STRIPS EXTENDING REARWARDLY OF THE HEAD CLAMPING MEMBERS HAVING REARWARDLY EXTENDING STRIPS OF REDUCED WIDTH FIXED AT THEIR REAR ENDS TO THE REAR END OF SAID PLATE STRIPS, SAID CLAMPING MEMBERS BEING LOCATED AT OPPOSITE SIDES OF SAID PLATE STRIPS FLARING OUTWARDLY THEREFROM AND HAVING CLAMPING HEADS WITH FLANGES DIRECTED TOWARDS SAID FLEXIBLE PLATE WHERE BY WHEN THE REAR PORTIONS OF SAID CLAMPING PLATE STRIPS ARE INSERTED INTO THE HANDLE SAID FLANGES CLAMP THE REAR PORTIONS OF THE FOLDS OF THE ABSORBENT MATERIAL AGAINST SAID FLEXIBLE PLATE.
