' This invention relates to improvements in wringable mops and is directed more particularly to mops having a mopping member and means for wringing water from said member.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a mop and holder structure which is simple in form inv that a comparatively few novel components are mployed to facilitate ease in assembly and low cost production. f v
According to the novel construction of the invention, means is provided for wringing or squeezing the mop member efliciently while said means is releasably and effectively held in nonwringing position.
The construction is characterized by novel handle connecting means while at the same time removal and insertion of the mop member is accomplished with great facility.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description ,proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features .of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying. drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a mop construction embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial front elevational enlarged view of the mop shown in Fig. 1 with th wringing members in wringing position;
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional elevational views on the lines 3-3 and 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the spring members of the mop construction;
Fig. 6 is a small scale elevational view of the mop construction shown in Fig. l; and
Fig. 7 is a partial perspective view of the mop holder member.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A holder 2 for a mop 4 includes an elongated channel member having downwardly and inwardly converging sides 6. The mop i may be of any desired material although sponge rubber has been found to be suitable.
The member 2 intermediat its ends or centrally of its length is cut away at its forward side to provide a clamp surface 8, as shown in Fig. 7.
A support It) is provided which has downwardly converging sides l2 arranged whereby the 3 Claims. (01. 15-119 2 holder may be readily inserted in and withdrawn longitudinally therefrom.
A forward portion of the support is cut away at I l and turned upwardly at l6. This portion is disposed above said support, see Figs. 2 and 3.
A pair of loops l8 extend outwardly from opposite sides of the support I0, as shown.
Side plates are provided which have slots 22 in which the loops l8 are receivable whereby said plates are swingable between upper and nonwringing positions in Figs. 1, 4 and 6 and a lower wringing position in Figs. 2 and 3.
Said plates 20 are preferably provided with flanges to provide a substantial enclosure when in upper non-wringing position.
Springs 30, see Fig. 5, have upper spaced transverse portions 32 and side portions 34 connected to lower longitudinal side portions 36. vSaid springs overlie the support In and straddle the 20 loops I8 with the lower portions 36 disposed inand manually pressed against said mop member.
A handle 36 is provided which may be tubular in form and has a spade 38 the upper portion of which is secured therein in any suitable manner.
The lower portion of the spade is more or less flat and has a T-shaped tongue 40 struck therefrom which extends inwardly as shown in Fig. 3. A projection 31 is provided on the member 38 to abut handle 36 and locate the spade therein.
Upper edges of the flanges 24 of plates 20 are cut away at 2| so that upper portions of the said plates are in intimate relation when the plates are in upper position.
A screw 42 is secured to member 38 and is insertable through an opening provided in portion I 6 of the support. A thumb nut 44 is provided on the screw 42, see Fig. 3. The upper end of part It is provided with a slot 39 to receive tongue 40.
A lower end portion 46 of the spade 88 is adapted to abut the edge 8 of the holder 2.
The nut it may be removed from the screw l2 and the handle and spade removed. With the nut loosened so that the lower end 46 of the spade releases the holder 2 said holder and mop may be withdrawn therefrom. The mop and holder or a replacement may be inserted in the support and by tightening the nut it is clamped in place by part 46 of the spade.
The holder being cut-away as it is, it is held in the support by the clamp part 46 and may not shift longitudinally as the ends of the cut-away portion abut opposite sides of the spade.
The handle and spade are readily removed from the support and easily replaced the tongue 40 being disposed in the vertical slot of the part 40 the. handle and spade are held against tilting.
It will be observed that in use the wringing operation is readily and easily accomplished while the plates are yieldingly held in either upper or lower wringing positions.
It will also be observed that the holder and mop are readily and easily withdrawn from or inserted in the support and are held therein against shifting for the normal use of the mop.
The parts are preformed and therefore readily assembled without the necessity of special tools, all to the end that economical manufacture is accomplished whilst an efllcient device is provided.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
I What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates is:
1. A mop construction comprising in combination, an elongated support having opposite longitudinal sides and an elongated guideway therebetween, an elongated mop holder insertable in and withdrawable from said guideway, means for releasably securing said holder in said guideway, pairs of spaced hinge loops at opposite longitudinal sides of said support, a pair of plates each having spaced slots provided on inner longitudinal edges thereof receiving said loops whereby said plates are swingable between upper non-wringing and lower wringing positions, and means yieldably holding said plates in either of said positions, said holding means including spring members extending transversely across and downwardly at said opposite sides of said support having lower portions engaging inner longitudinal portions of said plates.
2. A mop construction comprising in combination, an elongated support having opposite longitudinal sides and an elongated guideway therebetween, an elongated mop holder insertable in and withdrawable from said guideway. means for releasably securing said holder in said guideway, pairs of spaced hinge loops at opposite longitudinal sides of said support. a pair of plates each having spaced slots provided on inner longitudinal edges thereof receiving said loops whereby said plates are swingable between upper non-wringing and lower wringing positions, and means yieldingly holding said plates in either of said positions, said plates provided with flanges on outer longitudinal sides and opposite ends arranged whereby when the plates are in upper nonwringing position they provide a substantial enclosure for said support and mop holder, said holding means including spring members extending transversely across and downwardly at opposite sides of said support having lower portions engaging inner longitudinal portions of said plates.
3. A mop construction comprising in combina tion, an elongated support having an elongated channel guideway open along the lower longitudinal side thereof, an elongated mop holder insertable in the end of the guideway of said support, pairs of spaced hinge loops along said support with the loops of the pairs thereof disposed on opposite longitudinal sides of said support, a pair of similar longitudinal plates one at each longitudinal side of the support each having spaced slots along inner edges thereof receiving said hinge loops whereby said plates are swingable between upper non-wringing positions and lower wringing positions, and releasable holding means for said plates, said holding means including U-shaped spring members having upper portions disposed on the upper side of said support and side portions depending therefrom provided with openings at lower ends thereof through which said hinge loops extend, and said side portions being disposed between the sides of said support and inner edge portions of said plates.
