To all whom t may concern:

yBe it known that l, Ti-ioMas iVArniNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norlina, in the county of l/'arren and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Clothesline Reel, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention has reference to reels, and more particularly to devices especially designed for winding clothes lines.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a reel of this character having a double winding 'surface wherein the line may be wound on one surface while the same is being unwouiid from its adjacent surface.

Another object of the invention is to pro? vide a novel locking means which may be thrown out of operation, and held in such position while the winding operation is being carried out.

A still further object of the invention is to provide means for holding the locking element in engagement with the reel, eliminating any possibility of the reel slipping to cause the line to sag under the weight of articles supported thereon.

l/Vith the foregoing` and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention .resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is an elevational view disclosing the reel in an operative position.

Figure 3 is a fragmental detail view of the locking arm and means for securing the locking arm in its locked and unlocked positions.

Referring' to the drawing in detail, the device includes a bracketmember formed with arms 5 which are apertured to accommodate the bolts 6, whereby the arms may be secured to a suitable supporting element, not shown. y

These arms have right angler' portions 7 which are secured together as by means of the rivet 3, the right angled portions beingl twisted as at 9, and separated to provide the supporting arms 10 and 11 respectively.

In order that the walls of the openings 15 will be reinforced against lateral strain directed thereto by the locking arm 17, a metallic band 18 is provided and secured to the portion intermediate the winding surface, the band being provided with openings 15. Carried by the right angled portidn 17 of the arms 5, are the spaced ears 19, between which the arm 17 is pivotally supported, and as shown, the arm 17 is provided with a lug .2O formed integral therewith.

Cooperating with the lug 20 is a spring member 21 with one end thereof bolted to one of the right angled portions 7, the arm being curved slightly upwardly as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, so that when the locking arm 17 is moved to a locking position7 the spring member 21 engaging the lug` 20, will force the right angled poi'- tion 16 thereof into the opening lying opposite thereto.

The reel is secured to the shaft 22 that is mounted in suitable openings formed in the arms 10 and 11, one end of the shaft 22 being formed into an operating handle 23, by means of which the reel may be rotated to accomplish its purpose.

Used in conjunction with the reel is a pulley 24 supported by the 'arms 25 which are adapted for positioning on a suitable supporting surface notshown, it being contemplated to position the `pulley 24, at a point remote from the reel to `support one portion ofthe line forming a part of the invention.

This line is indicated at 26 and is shown as having its ends secured to the winding surfaces of the drum, the intermediate portion of the line moving over the pulley 24. Due to the manner of securing the line 26 to the reel, it is obvious that as one end of the line is reeled onto a winding surface, the opposite end of the line is unwound from the adjacent winding surface, with the result that articles that are secured to the line, may be moved to and from the reel 24 at the will of the operator.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a person may place clothes or similar articles on the portion of the line adjacent to the reel, and by rot-ating the reel, the articles supported on-the line may be moved lto E a position in close proximity to the pulley ing arms and having a lug formed at one end thereof, said locking arm adapted to cooperate with the reel for locking the seme against rotary movement7 a curved spring member secured to the arms and contacting with the' lug, and one end of the curved spring member adapted to Contact with the lockingarm when the same is in its locked position to restrict movement of the locking arm in one direction.
