FRANK ELLISON BEST, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOB TO FRANK E. BEST, INC., OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, A CORPORATION OF WASHINGTON.
PADLOCK.
Application filed February 14, 1922.
To allen/wm, z'tmay concern.' n I Be it knoivn that l, FRANK lil. Blier. a cit1- Zen of the United States. residing at battle,
in the county of King and State ot -Washington. have invented certain new and use- ;tul lmprovenients in Padlocks. et which the 'followingl is a specification.
This invention relates to padlocks and. more especially. to that type ot' padloclrs having shackles arranged to be secured in various positions to the lock body by meansoit latch devices which are regulated by lock mechanism oi? the character illustrated and described in United States Patent o. l5 1.384.022 issued to me July 5. 192i.
lhe object of the invention. generally stated, is the perfecting ot locks ot' this type to render the same more serviceable and convenient to use.
More specific objects and advantages to the .invention Will appear 'from the followinn' description.
The invention consists in the novel construction7 arrangement and adaptation ot l parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings,-
Figure 1 is a perspective viewv ot a padlock embodying my invention. Fig'. 2 is a longitudinal sectional vieiv ot the lock. the shackle beine,v shown in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through ol? Fia'. Q. the core assembly containing the lock mechanism being' omitted. Fig. li is a perspective view of the lock tumbler. I In said drawings, the reference numeral represents the lock body comprising a tubular shell 6 into the ends oit which are Welded or otherwise integrally connected top and bottom Walls 7 and 8 and in juxtaposi tion with blocks 9 and 10 which are disposed at opposite ends respectively ot the shell chamber.
Adjacent to its opposite sides. the body is provided With apertures 11 and 1Q extending entirely through said body to receive the legs 13 and 131 of a shackle 14C. The shackle legs are provided along their inner sides with series of spaced notches 15 and 151.
Provided between blocks 9 and 10 in the Serial No. 536,427.
lock body is the housing. indicated by 16, for a core assembly containingthe loclc mechanism which is or may be similar to the correspondingly designated assembly illustrated and explained in the patent above referred to.
The core assembly in the present invention is removable from the housing 16 through an opening 17, Figs. 1 and in a side of the shell, said opening' being closed by a tace plate 18 Whose outer surface is hush or coextensive with the outer suriiace ot the shell surroundingl such opening. The core assembly. like in the aforesaid patented lock. is detachably secured in place by means of a settable key inserted in keyhole 19. F l, operating in a key-plug; 2O to project a gate 21, Fig'. 2. into or from its engaged relations with the core housing 16.
The key plug' 20. when controlled by means of what is conventionally called a workable key inserted in the 'keyhole 19. serves through the medium of the throw element ot the plugl to regulate a tumbler 23 which constitutes the shackle fastener.
More particularly7 this tumbler consists of a bar Q41- havinp; a hook 25 at one end and an offset arm 2G at its other end as shown in Figs. 2 and e.
The tumbler is located in a recess 2l' of the block 9 and is mounted tor oscillatory movements by the provision of trunnion elements 241-1 which are journaled in pockets. such as 28. Fig. 2, provided tor the respective trunnions in opposite sides ot the recess 27.
29 represents a spring; secured in a groove 30 ot' the Wall 7 and acts resiliently against the tumbler to retain the tumbler-hook Q5 in engagement with one of the notches in the adjacent shackle leg for coupling the shackle to the body of the lock.
To disengage the tumbler from the shackle. the workable key is utilized to impart rotary movement to the plug- 2O thereby causing 'the throa7 22 to aet through the medium of the arm 26 to eect the Withdrawal of the hook Q5 trom its engagement with the shackle.
What I claim, is, In a padlock7 the combination of the body, a shackle having parallel legs adapted to extend through holes provided therefor in 5 said body, a core insertible in said bodr between the shackle legs, a tumbler engageable with either of said shackle legs selectively, a core provided Within the body, key actuated locking mechanism provided in said core for regulating said tumbler with respect to the shackle, and means for detach- :lbly securing` the (fore Within the housing.
FRANK ELLISON BEST.
