ROBERT TIRE IRWIN, 0F OSHAVIA, ONTARIO; CANADA,
SHARPE'NING DEVICE.
Application filed. March 23, 1921.
1 '0 all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, Ronnu'r This lnwizv, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oshawa, Province of Ontario, Ganada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to sharpening devices and more particularly to a sharpening device especially adapted for use with scissors or the like The object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, reliable in operation and easy andinexpensive to manufacture, which obviates the necessity of the exercise of skill or a high degree of attention and which requires for its op eration only that a simple movement be imparted to the scissors or tool being sharpened.
Other objects and advantages reside in con tain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a parteif this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view,
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the parts prior to assembly.
Referring to the drawing wherein, for the sake of illustration, is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral .10 designates a bed plate of wood or the like which is stepped at one end to provide steps or seats 11 and 12 respectively. The bed plate is provided with an opening .13 which extends therethrough centrally oi the step or seat 11.
A. compound clamp block and holder 15 is arranged upon the seat 11 of the bed plate and is provided with an opening 16 adapted to be alined with the opening 13 of the bet. plate. The face 17 of the block adjacent the step 12 is undercut or inwardly inclined as shown in the drawings. The base of the blot-lg however, is of such extent as to project beyond the step or seat 11 and overlie the seat 12 through-out its entire length.
An abrading element 18 rests upon the seat 12 and its top surface is engaged along one side by the portion of the block 15 which overlies the seat 12. The abrading Serial No. 454,714.
element preferably consists of a double-cut file.
A. stationary guide desizg natz-id generally at 20 is provided and comprises a base plate 21 which is interposed between the clamp block 15 and the seat 11 and which is provided with an opening 22 adapted to be alined with the openings 13 and .16 of the bed plate and clamp block respectively. An inclined guide plate 23 is integral with the base plate of the stationary guide and is adapted to lie flush against the inclined face 17 of the clamp block and holder 15 and is adapted to engage one face of the blade of the scissors or other tool being sharpened; At one end the guide plate 23 is extended and curved or flared outwardly as at 245.
A spring guide or tensioning device designated generally at, 25 cooperates with the stationary guide 20 and includes a body portion 26 arranged to rest upon the top surface of the block 15 and having a depending flange 27 which engages the back face of the block. The body portion 26 is provided with an opening 28 which is alined with the openings 13, 16 and 22 in the assembly. A tension plate 29 is connected to the body portion 26 by means of a curved or bowed spring portion 30 integral with the tension plate and withthe'body portion. The tension plate has one end extended and outwardly curved or flared as at 31.
A screw 32 extends upwardly through the alinedopenings 13, 16, 22 and 28 and has its head 33 countersunk in the underside of the bed plate. A wing nut 3%. is threaded on the upper end of the screw and is adapted to bear against the body portion 26 of the spring or tension plate and when the Wing nut is turned home on the screw it clamps or binds the clamp block and holder and consequently the abrading element, the stationary guide and the tension plate in proper position.
In operation, the blade of the scissors or other tool that is to be sharpened is inserted between the tension plate and the stationary guide plate with its edge adjacent the abrading element tremities 24: and 31 of the stationary guide and tension plate facilitate the insertion of the blade. When the blade is inserted it is only necessary to move it back and forth between the tension plate and the stationary guide plate and both plates cooperate to maintain it at the proper angle or inclina- The curved or flared extion. Moreover, the tension plate tends to feed it downwardly toward the abrading element as the eflicient action of the spring portion 30 is most effective and most powerful at the upper end of the tension plate and decreases toward its lower end. The bed plate may be grasped With one hand While the tool is reciprocated With the other, or, if desired, it may be suitably secured in position.
I claim 1. In a sharpening device of the character described, a bed plate, a compound clamp block and holder arranged on said bed plate and having an inclined face, an abrading element underlying said block and held thereby, a stationary guide including a base engaged by the block and having an inclined guide plate lying flush against the inclined face of the block, a tensioning device including a body portion supported upon the top of the block, an inclined tension plate and a bowed spring portion connecting said body portion and said tension plate, and releas able means for securing the block, guide and tensioning device in assembly.
2. In a sharpening device of the character described, a bed plate, an abrading element secured upon said bed plate, a stationary metallic guide overlying said abrading element and having one end extended and outwardly curved and a tensioning device cooperable With the metallic guide and also overlying said abrading element and having one end extened and outwardly curved and cooperable With the outwardly extending end of the guide to facilitate insertion of the tools to be sharpened.
