SUPPORT FOR PENCIL SHARP ENERS. APPLICATION FILED DECJI I9I9.

' umra ATNT OFFICE.
I ARTHUR L. TALBOTT, F DES MOINES, IOWA.
sorronr roarnncrnsimnrn'nnnsr supporting a pencil sharpener or .analogous device in operating position and has for its primary object the provision of a simple construction whereby the device may beeffectively and quickly supported in operating position.
An object of the invention is to provide locking means, parts of which cooperate in a manner so as to effectively hold the device rigidly in operative position.
Besides the above my lnvention is distinguished in the novel manner of associating the base of the bracket with the base plate and locking same when associated.
With these and other objectsin view my invention will be better understood fromthe following detailed description'taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein- I Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the sharpener. Fig. 2 is a detailed longitudinal sectional view through the bracket.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the base plate.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view illustrating parts in locking position.
Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a portion of the plunger.
Fig. 6 is a bracket.
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan of the base plate. Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which my invention may be constructed 1 designates apencil sharpener of well known construction including receptacle 2, cutter 3, and handle 4 for operating the cutter. The bracket 5 forming one element of my invention has its'base portion 6 formed with a centrally arranged circular opening 7. Slidably supported by the bracket is a plunger 9 having a substantially oblong shaped head 10 mounted for movement within the opening 7. A coil spring 11 encircles the plunger at a point to force the head into its normal position within the opening, 7 so that the base 6 may rest flat bottom plan of the base of the Specification of Letters Patent. "Patented' Ju'n'e 20 Application filed December 1, 1919. Serial No. 341,615.
. upon a surface. The finger: piece 12 is conother object. The plate 13 is provided with a boss 15 that is received in "the opening 7 when the parts are assembled. The base is further provided centrally of the boss with an opening 16 for allowing the passage of the head 10 into locking engagement with 1 the lugs 17 when the bracket is given a portion of a turn on the base plate. For the purpose of absolutely locking the bracket to the base plate to rigidly hold the sharpener against rattling, each lug is provided with a recess 18 that receives an end portion of the head 10.
In this construction it will be seen that in a very simple manner the cutter can be arranged in cutting position and rigidly held against vibration during the cutting operation. When the sharpener is not in use, it may be just as readily put away so as not to be in an obstructive position.
It is, of course understood that my invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. In a device as set forth, a bracket, a base portion formed thereon and'provided an opening entering said recess, a plunger slidably carried by said bracket, a locking head on the lower end of said plunger, a base plate provided with an upstruck portion seating in said recess and with an opening aligning with the opening in said base portion, said head adapted'to be inserted through said openings and rotated to lock said base plate and bracket connected.
2. In a device as set forth, a bracket, a base portion formed thereon and provided with a recess in its upper surface and with an opening entering said recess, a plun er slidably carried by said bracket, a locking with a recess'in its upper surface and with head on the lower end of saidplunger, a base plate provided with an upstruck portion seating in said recess and with an opening aligning with the opening in said base portion, said head adapted to be inserted through said openings and rotated to lock said base plate and bracket connected, locking lugs on said base plate for engagementwith said head a spring about said plunger for maintaining said head and lugs in engagement, and an operating thumb piece on said p1un- 10 er. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
