J. s. KING BOOK WITH DETACHABLE LEAVES Filed Apr. 19, 1922 R mm m E U A s S n.- M A 0 Patented Mar. 13, 1923.
JAMES sAIywEL KING, or LONDON, ENGLAND, AssIeNoa' or ONE-HALF KNIGHT & COMPANY, LIMI TED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BOOK WITH DETACHABLE LEAVES.
Application filed April 19, 1922. Serial No. 555,582.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAr/rnsSAMUEL KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 227-239 Tooley Street, London. England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Books with Detachable Leaves, of which the following is a Specifi cation.
The object of this invention is to provide 1 an improved means for securing the loose leaves of ledgers and the like of the type in which two or more straps secured to the inside of one half of the cover pass through the loose leaves and it may be also through followers at the end and beginning of the leaves and into the interior of the other half of the cover where they are secured to a cross bar which is parallel to the hinge and is capable of slight movement towards and away from the hinge. 7
According to this invention the cross bar has attached to it an actuating strap which passes towards the end of the cover remote from the hinge and has fastened to it a corrugated strip of metal or other suitable material while a similar corrugated strip is secured to the inside of the cover so that by pressing the two corrugated strips together the strap can be secured in a number of different positions each diflering from the next by the distance between two successive corrugations. Preferably a flap or lid is hinged to the cover near its edge so that it can be folded down upon the strap and held in position by pushing a tongue upon it under a transverse strip of metal fixed in the cover. I
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 of which is a erspective view of part of'a loose leaf edger constructed according to the invention part of the inside of the front cover being cut away to show the mechanism, while Figure 2 is a similar view showing the 45 flap or lid in its operative position.
A, A, A, are three straps which are secured to the inside of the back B of the cover; these pass through loose leaves C and through followers D into the interior of the cover E within which they are secured to a cross bar F which is parallel to the hinge G and is capable Of mo vement Within the front of the cover. is an actuating strap H which has secured to its underside a strip of corrugated metal M. N is a similar corrugated strip secured to the inside of the cover. Hinged to the cover is a flap O in which can slide a tongue When the, strap H has been pulled into, the desired position it is pressed down so that the ridges on the strip M enter the recesses of the strip N and the flap O is turned down into the position shown 1n Figure 2;
to the other cover, a corrugated strip secured to the cross bar, a second corrugated strip secured to the cover first mentioned and means whereby the two corrugated strips can be pressed together to. fix the position of the cross bar.
2. In a book, the combination of two covers, a hinge uniting them, a cross bar slidable' in one of the covers, a plurality of straps one end of each being secured to the bar and the other end of each being secured to the other cover, an actuating strap secured to the bar, a corrugated strip on the strap, a second corrugated first mentioned and means whereby the corrugated strip on the strap can be pressed against the corrugated strip on-the cover.
3. In a book, the combination of two covable in one of the covers, a plurality of straps one end of each being secured to the bar and the other end of each being secover, an actuating strap strip secured to the cover a corrugated strip on the To CHARLES Attached to the cross bar F ers, a hinge unitingthem, a cross bar slid straps one end of each. being secured to the which the flap can be secured in such a post bar and the other end of each being secured tion that it presses'the two corrugated strips to the other cover, an actuating strap secured together. to the bar, a corrugated strip on the strap, a In testimony that I claim the foregoing 5 second corrugated strip secured to the cover as my invention I have signed my name this first mentioned, a flap hinged to the cover 5th day of April 1922. first mentioned and a slidable tongue by 1 JAMES SAMUEL KING;
