PATENT GFFECE.
JOSEPH BATTISTA, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
POCKET.
Application led March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,495.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BATrIsTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pockets, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to pockets for garments, more especially to pockets for outer garments, such as coats, overcoats, and the like, and this invention has among its objects the construction of a pocket which is capable of assuming a plurality of positions so as to give various eifects which add to the attractiveness and appearance of the garment.
In carrying the objects of my invention into effect, I provide a pocket, preferably for coats, which is attached at its upper edge tothe garment, the lower edge, and preferably the sides also being entirely unattached. The pocket is so formed that it may be very readily placed on the outside of the coat material and be made to resemble a hanging patch pocket or may be placed in another position to resemble the ordinary pocket. I preferably provide a slit along the underneath of the pocket, when the pocket is outside, so as to allow access to the inner garments therethrough. It will be seen therefore that by a simple expedient I produce a pocket structure which is capable of producing several distinct styles of garments.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and in which similar reference characters denote similar parts,
Figure 1, represents a portion of a garment having thereon a pocket constructed according to my invention,
Figure 2, a vertical section through the garment showing the hanging patch effect of my pocket,
Figure 3, a similar view showing the pocket inside of the garment, and
Figure 4, a section showing my pocket in the normal position of the ordinary pocket.
The garment 1, which may be considered a coat ,for illustration, has attached thereto the pocket comprising an outer and an in-` ner section 2 and 6 which are secured together along their lower and side edges, while the section 6 is secured to the garment along its upper edge 3. A Hap 4 covering the pocket is secured to the coat and usually just above the pocket. The pocket has a snap fastener 5 one portion of which is secured to the inside of the garment material and the other to the upper portion of the pocket to prevent the pocket from sagging.
A slit 7 is formed in the coat l and a corresponding slit 8 is formed in the lining material 9 so as to enable the wearer to insert his hand. As shown in Figure 2, the pocket 2 is placed outside. of the coat 1l and the flap 4 covering it. This forms the ordinary hanging patch pocket effect. In order to transform this style of pocket, to the ordinary pocket, it is merely necessary to draw the pocket 2 through slit 7, or slits 7 and 8, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, respectively.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a variety of effects or distinctive styles can. be produced by the simple manipulation of my pocket, the positions of which as shown in the drawings are merely illustrative and not limiting.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire Ato secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a garment, a normally inner and a normally outer layer of material said layers having alined slits, a pocket secured at one upper edge to one layer of material and adapted to be thrust through said slits to alternative positions inside and outside the garment and between said layers of material, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana this 24th day of February, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty.v
