E. c. PIERCE HAT SUPPORTING DEVICE Filed Apr. 9, 1921 Patented Mar. i923.
tuner ELIZABETH C. PIERCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Application filed April 9, 1921. Serial No. 459,856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH C. France,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to a hat supporting device; that is, to a device which may be arranged inside of a hat, particularly a ladys hat, for supporting the hat comfortably upon the wearershead.
A further object is to provide a device for this purposewhich will readily accommodate itself to the contour of the wearers head and hair thus enabling the hat to assume an easy and proper position irrespective of the way in which thewearers hair 20 is arranged, and without likelihood of deranging the hair.
Afurther object is to provide a device which is simple, cheap and eiiicient and which may beeasily and quickly attached in position within a hat.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in'part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations,
arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention, and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a. preferred form of embodiment of the invention:
Figure l is a perspective view of a ladys hat illustrating the device of this invention in position therein, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device shown enlarged and removed from the hat.
Referring to the drawings for describin in detail the structure which is illustrate therein, the reference character L indicates the hat having the usual head opening 1.
The present invention consists of two pieces, as 2 and 3, of tape or other similar material, said pieces being of substantially equal length. They extend at right angles to each other and are connected together at their lapping point by a connecting plate G. This plate has two pairs of openings therethru, one pair as 4 and 5, having the tape 2 threaded therethru, and the other pair, as 6 and 7, receiving the tape 3. All of the openin s are suitably large so that the plate G is capable of moving readily from one position to another along the length of the two tapes thus enabling the tapes to be positioned for properly fitting to the shape of the wearers hair.
At their ends both of the pieces of tape are preferably provided with fastening devices H. These may be of any suitable character but preferably consist of double pointed pins since the same are capable of being thrust thru portions of the hat material and of being securely held by being bent over upon the opposite surface of the hat material. The end portions of the tapes are preferably folded back upon themselves, as indicated at 8, so as to provide a suitable attaching body for the devices H.
It should be mentioned that in some instances the ends of the tapes may be left without attaching means, the tapes being in this case intended to be cut to proper lengths for correctly fitting into the hat and to be thereafter attached by needle and thread.
It should also be noted that the attaching devices H, or their equivalent where used, are preferably attached to the tapes in such manner that they may be readily disconnected and moved to other places along the length of the tapes, this provision being for the purpose of enabling the user to prop erly fit the device into the hat crown.
The position within the hat into which the device is placed is clearly seen in the drawing in Fig. 1; that is, with the ends of the tapes attached at four substantially equidistant points 9 around the hat band, the 95 plate G being held centrally so that it will rest upon the top of the wearers head and so that the tapes will extend in four radial directions downwardly about the head to their points of attachment with the hat.
If desired a suitable attaching device may be providedfor flexibly connecting the plate G with the crown of the hat so as to insure that the tapes will always stand in the proper position whether the hat is in use or not. This device may take any form but for convenience is shown to consist of a tab 10 connected with the plate G by means of a cord, or the like, 11, said tab being preferably made of gummed cloth or paper so that it is adapted to be stuck on to the inner surface of the hat crown.
The tapes 2 and 3 may be of any suitable material but preferably are of the elastic type so that they will stretch longitudinally to a suitable degree for allowing the hat to rest comfortably upon the wearers head. The use of elastic tape in this connection has a further advantage in that it will stretch and thus permit the hat to be drawn downwardly over the wearers head to what may be termed an abnormal position. By inserting one or more hat pins in the usual manner at this time thru the hat and hair, then the effort of the elastic tapes to lift the hat will result in clamping the hair to a certain extent between the tapes and the hat pins thus producing a comfortable tightness of the hat upon the head.
While the tapes are shown and described as extending continuously thru the plate Gr, and said plate G is described as being movable upon said tapes, it should nevertheless be understood that in some instances the tapes may be separated at the plate and that the plate may be connected so that it will not be movable longitudinally of the tapes. It should also be understood that while two pieces of tape, providing four ends, are shown and above described, yet any number of tapes and ends may be provided according to preference, it being observed in this connection that the tapes Pll',
inarily constitute only a sort of false .cap'
which fits readily to the contour of the we'arers hair and which in turn supports the hat.
By using this device the band portion of the hat may be suitably large so that it does not press against the wearers head and derange her hair. Any ordinary size of hat .bandmay be used with equal comfort provi'ded only that it is large enough not to bind against the wearers head, and once the de yice of this invention is placed therein no further attention-need be given it during the life of the hat. L
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the fol-,
.1-1 winge1aimfs, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or
shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustratlve only and not in a limiting sense. b
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hat supporting device comprising a plurality of tapes arranged in lapping post tion, a connecting plate at the lapping point of said tapes, and said plate having openings the-rethru thru which said tapes are threaded to hold said tapes connected and suitable for use in the manner set forth.
2. A hat supporting device comprising a plurality of tapes arranged in lapping position, a connecting plate at the lapping point of said tapes, said plate having openings therethru thru which said tapesare threaded to hold said tapes connected, and said openings being of a size to permit free movement of the plate longitudinally of said tapes for the purpose set forth.
3. A hat supporting device made upas an article of manufacture adapted to be dis pensed-separately from the hat but to be connected with a hat for use for the purpose set forth, said supporting device comprising a flexible-cap adapted to rest upon and to accommodate itself readily to the contour of the wearers head, and having holding means carried thereby adapted to releasably engage the band portion of a hat for releasably retaining the supporting device in operative position within the hat, sald holding means comprising a plurality of bendable tangs adapted to penetrate the material of the hat and to be bent into a retaining condition.
4. A hat supporting device made up as an article of manufacture 'adaptedto be dispensed separate from the hat but to be connected with a hat for use for thefpurpose set forth, said supporting device comprising a plurality of flexible cloth tapes connected together radiating from a substantially central point so as to constitute a cap adapted to rest upon and to accommodate itself readily to the contour of the wearers head and attaching means detachably connected at the ends of said tapes whereby said attaching means may be moved to different positions alongv the length of said tapes, said attaching means being of a character to releasably engage the band portion of a hat for releasably retaining the supporting device in operative position within the hat. I
5. A hat supporting device made up as an article of manufacture adapted to be dis- ,pensed separate from the hat butto be connected with a hat foruse for the purpose set forth, said supporting device comprising a flexible/cap adapted to rest up'on and to accommodate itself readily to the contour of the wearers head, holding means carried by the cap adapted to releasably engage the band portion of a hat for releasably retaining the supporting device in operative position within the hat, and other means carried by the central portion of said cap by which to connect said central portion with the crown portion of the hat whereby to
