snrr's Moron.
Application led December 7, 1921. Serial No. 520,685.
To all whom it may concer/n.' Be it known that I,'RoBnR'r WAHL, a c1t1- zen of the German Republic, residing at Preetz /Holst, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Ships Motors, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to motor oars or outside motors on board ships and has for its object an improvement of the cooling and lubricating apparatus for machinery o this kind. The disadvantage of ordinary constructions'of this lnd consists therein, that the lubricant is carried away from the gear by the cooling water, this resulting in depreciated efficacy of motive power, .-whlle the unavoidable introduction of sand or the like may lead to an untimely destruction of the driving gear and pump. v According to this invention and in order l to obviate the aforementioned objections a continuous circulation of a unitary cooling and lubricating medium is established, in a special manner, through the cylinders and operating gear of the motor. The unitary cooling and' lubricating medium may consist of oil or water with an addition of oil, or any other liquid adapted for this purpose.
According to my invention, therefore I secure an eihcient cooling of the cylinder and at the same time a lubricating of the bevel-gear, the propeller shaft and its bearin s.
in embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing which is a vertical section of the improved arrangement.
The cooling and lubricating liquidhis cir- 40 culated vby means of the screw-operating gear gn the'water-tight casing` f, which gear serves as a pump for said liquid. The circulation follows the direction indicated by arrows along the communication pipe a containing the motor shaft h and passing through branch-pipes 7c to the cylinders b,
. thence by the intermediate outlet pipe c to the store-tank and, compensating vessel d' from which the circulation is directed down '50 the pipe e into the pump g to be started anew in the upward direction. The bevel-wheels g of the propeller driving gear i are so constructed and enclosed'as to act as a rotary lifting pump.
The heat taken off the cylinder-walls b is given rip to the fair water during circulation through the` pipes e, a and casing f, while the lubricant intermiXed with the cooling water adheres tol the gears g, i and cylinder-walls b.
I claim 1. The combination of a ships motor with means for the continuous circulation of a lubricating and cooling liquid through the driving gear and around the motor cylinders, said means comprising a store-tank, a water tight gear casing, pipe connections and interposed mechanism for circulating said liquid.
2. In ships motors comprising a two-cylinder engine, a main shaft rotated by the same, a propeller shaft and gear driven by the main shaft, a water-tight casing for the propeller gear, a liquid forcepump within said casing and forming part of the gear therein, a propeller adjacent said casing, a liquid store-tank,
and pipe connections from. said casing directto the store-tank, open communication from the said casing to the force-pump, and
pipe connections from the gear within said casing to the engine cylinders and thence to the store-tank.
8. In ships motors comprising a twocylinder horizontal engine, a liquid tank above the cylinders, .a .crank-case intermediate the cylinders, a depending main shaft rotated by the engine, a water-tight casing containing the lower end of said main shaft, a propeller shaft and driving gear within said casing in -connection with the main shaft, a circulation pump formed of'said driving gear, an enclosing chamber formed with inlet orifice to the driving gear, a cen.
vtral pipe connecting the chamber with the crank-case, branch-pipes from the central pipe -to-the engine cylinders, a com-munication pipe from bothcylinders to the said tank and a down-pipe from the tank direct into the' said water-tight casing. ROB-ERT WAHL,
