INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PROSPER LORANGE, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Mannheim-Freudenheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, and more particularly in engines which are constructed in such a way that to a large extent the same elements can be used for building right and left engines. Heretofore engines and more particularly marine engines have been constructed in such a way that all the main elements of the engine located at opposite sides of a plane of symmetry located longitudinally of the engine and passing through I the axis thereof are as far as possible alike in form, and that other parts which distinguish the right and left sides of the engine are mounted and shaped so that one may take the place of the other. Invconstructing on this principle for example a marine Diesel engineconsiderable difficulty is connected with the construction of the base plate having at one side the driving means for the cam shaft mounted thereon. But it is possible to. construct the base plate on the above principle, though a base plate is obtained which is less simple in construction. However, the construction of the frame and more particularly the uprights is more difficult particularly where the uprights have the guide ways for the cross head, driving means for compressors V and ship freeing and pumps, and means for V cooling the pistons mounted thereon, in which case the construction must be such that each of these parts can be fixed either to one or the other side, and it is necessary to provide the uprights at both sides with fitting faces and screw bolts.
,The difliculty in the construction is fur: ther increased in cylinders which are provided at one side with the cam shaft and at the opposite sidewith the exhaust and ad mission pipes, in which case the cylinders must be constructed in such a way that they can be individually turned around. But even when so constructing the cylinders there remain difficulties which are almost unsurmountable.
In any case, where the engine has been constructed so as to be symmetrical relatively to the said longitudinal plane, it can not be changed from a right to a left engine Without practically reconstructing the engine and subjecting the same to a new trial.
The object of the present invention is to provide an engine the elements of which may be completely manufactured and kept in stock and combined at will into a right or left engine. With this object in View I do not rely on the said symmetry relatively to alongitudinal plane, but I construct the engine symmetrically of a transverse plane, in which case there are only a few non-corresponding parts at the front and rear end, which parts can be readily exchanged.

As shown in the drawings the cylinder casting and basevplate o is constructed symmetrically relatively to the central transverse plane indicated by the center lines uv in Fig. 1 and w-y in Figs. 2'and 3.
