4Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. HELMOND, a'citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, 'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines and C'ases,"of whichthe fol-- lowing is a specification.-y y This linvention relates ,torr shipping 'cases for typewriting machines and means for fas'- tening typewriting machines therein.
Cases for this purpose are ordinarilyl made entirely of wood, and the typewritingf machines usually have their frames ysecured to the bases of the cases lby screws. yThese cases are likely to vbe subjected to considerable rough handling in transit; Such handling is apt to damage the typewriting maychines within the cases, particularly the castmetal frames 0f the machines which are eX- tremely brittle and are not, therefore, capable of withstanding sudden blow of any Vin all-wool shipping case of this `kind gives lno external indication'of-the'condition of its contents, the Wooden base retaining its normal ext`ernalappearance so long asv the case remains intact. , Since the machine frame 22 and the base plate 16 are of metal and thedimeiisions of the metal are not affected by the lnunidity of the atmosphere, the tendency yof the screws 18' to become loose5 experienced with wooden bottoms is eliminated. Y f It is also yclesiiable to prevent the screws from beingr loosened by shaking and jarring ofthe shipping case. `To 'this end, friction devices are provided to engagethe screws` 18; The friction devices may be inthe form of spring washers 28 lwhich are inserted in the lrecesses 27 andl under` the heads of the screws 18.

The washers are thus caused to frictionally engage the heads of screws 18 to prevent the screws from shaking loose. The spring washers also serve to reinforce the portions of the base plate which form the bosses 25. f A sheet-steel cover 32 pressed int'o the form indicated in Figure 1 is securedin place by screws 33 which enter the walls 11, 12, 13 andli.l Thebfasc plate 16 and vthe cover 32 may be stiffened by4 being corrugated as indicated at 85 and. 36,;respeotively. Shipping' cases provided,` with metal tops and bottoms are considerably ylighter and smaller than lthe usual wooden cases. They may, therefore,` be 'shipped at less expense than the wooden cases. .s
Variations maybe resorted to within the scope of the invention, and lportions of the improvements may be used without th'ers. Having thus described my invention, claim:
1. ln coinbinatiom atypefwriting machine, a shipping container thereforcomprising a support, `the dimensions of wl1icl i are not affected .byits eqiosijiregto moisture, sa id support having projections for supporting the typewriting machine at a substantial distance above itself, and side' walls to which the support is attached, the arrangement being such that the support is positioned intermediate the planes of the 1.1,ppe'iv and lower edges of said side walls, and means attaching the support to the typewriting machine.
2. A shipping container for a typewriter, comprising a flexible metal support on which the typewriterframe is secured, so as to be spaced therefrom, and board yside walls to which the support is attached,l so as to be positioned intermediate the planes of the upperv and lower edges of Said sidewalls.
3. A container comprising walls and two ends, said walls being of wood and one of said ends being of metal, the metal e'nd being secured to said walls, so as to be .spaced inwardly from the acent edges ofy said side walls, and means tofsupport on said metal end a typewriter having a 'frame' to be carried in said container, comprising means to space .the typewriter, framevfroin said Aend and fastening Vmeanseffective'l on the typewriterfrarne atthe points where the usual feet aresecured when the machine is' inuse. v N ,.j
