IMPROVEMENT IN ROWLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,598, dated June 4, 1878; application filed December 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osEPH W. N ORG-ROSS, of the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rowlocks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being, had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinged and detachable rowlock mounted on a metallic guard-box secured to the gunwale of a boat, and containing the holding device by which the rowlock is secured. The guard is shown as made of open-work, and the springs arranged to secure the spindle of the rowlock may be seen through the openings. The guard may, however, be made solid, so as to protect and inclose the holding mechanism, and be arranged so as to be readily secured to the gunwale of a boat. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the metallic piece to which the holding mechanism is secured, and which forms the bottom of the guard-box, the box being shown in broken lines. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the rowlock-guard near its middle.

This invention has reference to that class of rowlocks in which the rowlock proper is secured by a spindle to suitable holding mechanism; and consists in the novel arrangement of a box or guard, within which the holding mechanism is contained, and to which the rowlock is secured, so that the whole may be fastened to the top of the gunwale of a boat without cutting and weakening the same.
In the drawings, a is the rowlock proper, and a the spindle of the same. b is the hinged bolster, in which the rowlock-spindle is secured. This bolster b is hinged to the side of the guard a. The guard 0 forms either an open or close box, within which the looking or holding device is secured. It also forms the support for the upper bolster, in which the spindle is secured. d is the bottom plate of the guard, provided with a step for the rowlock-spindle and springs or other devices, by which the spindle is secured. The plate d is secured to the guard c by a pin, d, cast on each end of the under side of the guard c. c 0 represent the springs. The whole is secured to the gunwale of a boat by screws ff without cutting, weakening, or injuring the same.
This improved rowlock, with the guard or box 0 and the bottom plate d, forms a new article, in which all the parts are firmly secured together, and which can be readily secured to the sides or gunwales of a boat by any ordinary mechanic.
The rowlock proper can be readily detached and swung over the side, as is shown in Fig. 1 in broken lines, and the whole formsa strong, durable, and ornamental attachment to a boat.
The box or guard 0 may be arranged, as shown, so as to be secured on the top of the gunwale, or it may be arranged so as to be secured to either the inside or outside of the same, as may be most desirable. In either case it will protect the mechanism contained within the same and insure the operation of the rowlock, while it may be secured Without defacing or injuring the boat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the rowlock a, provided with the spindle a and the hinged bolster b, of the guard 0, arranged so as to receive and retain the hinged bolster b in position, and secure the whole to the gunwale, substantially as and for the purpose described.
