stares rat A I my a c FRANZ A. FULLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IVIATCH BOX.
Application filed August 26, 1918. Serial no. 251,492.
T 0 aZZ whom it may] concern Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county ofEssex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Boxes, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters 'of'reference" marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in that-class of match boxes described in my Patent No. 1,033,240, dated 7 July 23, 1912, which are especially adapted for the reception of small packages of safety matches made of'card board, and such'as have been in extensive use for advertising purposes, but. which are also applicable to other uses.
The principal object of this invention isto provide a neat, and simply constructed match safe or box of the general character stated, and the invention has for its further object to provide a match safe or box,,comprising two normally closed sections, and a guard pivotally arrangedupon the hinge pin or rod of the case, so that the said guard,
. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the box open, the wind shield not being shown in said View Fig. 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary sectional side elevation of the box init s open position, said section being taken on line a2-m 1n F g. I i v.
Fig. 4 represents an enlarged end view of the box. Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary plan view of the box illustrating the wind shield in its closed position, secured near 'oneend in one of the sections, and a Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary view in T perspective of one of the box sectlons, illustrating the wind shield secured-thereto, in its 7 open position.
Similar letters of reference are usedin all of the above described views, to,indic'ate corresponding parts throughout the specification and'drawings, p
The improved match box is preferably made of sheet .metal of any suitable kind, and comprising a boxbody a, and a suitably hinged lid 6 of substantiallythe same shape and dimensions. These parts are of such shape 1 as to. lend themselves readilylto manufacture by the use of suitable punches and resent lugs formed integrally with the front end of the box body on, extending downwardly into the box bodyin closeproximity to and parallel with the frontedge of the box body a. thus providing a narrow space between which the free ends of thecombined spring and catch member d are secured. These lugs cc extend inwardly from the longitudinal edges of the box body,.so as to partly overlie the package of matches con-.. tained by saidbox. The combined spring dies, from ordinary sheet metal. 0-c repand catch member 03 is formed'from a single a H at piece of suitable metal. as illustrated,
the ends of the spring being located between the narrow space formed by the downwardly extending lugs cc, and the frontend of the box body flange. Formed centrally and integrally with'the spring is an upwardly and inwardly extending tongue e,'provided with a projection to receive a holding'lug 9. formed integral with the. lid b,"so' that whenthe box and lid are closed, such lug 9 will be received by theprojection f and firmly securethe box ,members in locked position. b represents a push piece secured to the underside of the springiin any com venient manner, adapted to pass through a suitable opening formed in the end of the box body a.
lhe box body a, and the lid 5 are respectively provided with one or more integral tubular members or ears j, 70, and Z, said tubular members j, 7, and Z being adapted to dovetail together with the tubular members or and a of the guard 0, to form a hinged barrel, all being operatively connected by means of a pin or pintle p.
The guard 0 is made from a single piece of metal, and along three of its side edges is provided with integral flanges q formed in the blank, from which said guard is made. The guard 0 is of such dimension as to properly overlie the heads of the matches as clearly indicated in the several views.
The rear or longitudinal edge of the guard 0 has formed integrally therewith, the tubular members on and a, which are formed by curling the metal thereof, as illus trated in the drawings. a
The outer edge of the tubular member 11. and the inner edge of the tubular member m, of the guard 0, as well as the right-hand edges of the tubular member and the tubular member Z of the box body a, are so formed as to provide integral stops, adapted to engage with each other to limit the movemcnt of the guard 0 on the hinged pin or rod 79, so that upon opening the case, the guard 0 will preferably assume the position illustrated in dotted lines, so that the matches may be easily and quickly removed from the folder and ignited upon the scratcher. swinging the guard 0 into the position illustrated in dotted lines, it will not interfere with the ready insertion. of the package of matches under the lugs 00.
The wind shield which is secured near one end of the hinged lid 7) preferably comprises a flat plate 9 provided with integral ends ss. designed to receive rivets z t by means of which the plate 1" is secured to the lid F). Hingedly connected to the front end of the plate r, in any suitable manner, is a plate a, the lower edge of which at its center is pro vided with a projection 42, cesigned to en.- gage with a centrally arranged spring to, formed integrally with the upper edge of theplate 1* which spring w is designed to maintain the plate u in the position illustrated, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
H ngedly secured to the plate a, and to the plate *1", are the collapsible side plates y -y and so constructed and arranged that the plates will fold iii and lie upon the plate 11 with the plates Ly -y resting upon the plates'z z, and under the plate 2; as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In order to open the wind shield, it is only necessary to lift the plate a at its edge a,
when the parts will spring into the position indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and be maintained in that position by the spring to engaging with the projection 11 on the plate The plates 2-2 are slotted near their lower edges to receive the ends s-s of the plate 9.
Experience has demonstated that the organization above described is a practical and e'fiicient one for accom lis'nine the ends the box and adapted to partly overlie a pack age of matches contained by said box, a hinged one piece match guard pivotally connected with the hinge of said body sections designed to cover the match tops, the said guard being provided with means having engagement with the box hinge for limiting the movement of said guard.
2. A match box adapted to hold a package of paper matches, comprising a pair of hinged body sections, one of said body sections opposite the hinged end having means extending from its longitudinal edges into the box and adapted to partly overlie a package of matches contained by said box, a hinged one piece match guard pivotally connected with the hinge of said body sections designed to cover the match tops, the said guard and the said body section hinges being each provided with integral engaging stops having engagement with each other when the box is opened to carry the guard in one direction with one of said body sections and to limit the movement thereof.
3. A match box, comprising a box body and a hinged lid, said box body adapted to hold a package of paper matches, and having on its longitudinal edges integral holding pieces extending at right angles from said longitudinal edges into the box and adapted to partly overlie a package of matches contained by said box, the box body being further provided with tubular members having integral stops, a one piece match guard pivotally connected with the box body.
designed toprotect the match tops, said match guard being provided with tubular members formed with integral stops designed to have engagement with the stops formed on the tubular members of the box body and adapted whenthe box is opened to carry the guard in one direction with the hinged lid and to limit the movement thereof.
4. A match box, comprising a box body and a hinged lid, said box body adapted to hold a package of paper matches, and having on its longitudinal edges integral hold- 111g pieces extending at right angles from said longitudinal edges into the box, and
adapted to partly overlie. 2i package of matches contained by said box, the box body being further provided with tubular members having integral stops, :1 one piece match 1 guard pivotaiiy connected with the box bers of the .box body adapted when the box is opened to carry the guard in one direction with the hinged lid and to limit the movement thereof. 7 t
