DISPLAY STAND.
Application filed May 18,-
To all whom t may concern.'
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM JOHN DoDD, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Stands, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in display stands, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and.. arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide-a display stand affording facilities for releasably holding a pluralityof boxes or containers in position to display the contents `of such 'boxes or containers to best afd-E A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is of sim liied'construction, will take up but little sp ce and which .is thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent fromv the fdllowing description, and'.
the novel features of the vinvention will be .'plication, in which a Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a particularly outlined infthe claims;
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this apappended practical embodiment oflthe invention and a (plurality of box-like containers supported thereon, i
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through a'f-ragmentary portion of thev structure shown in Fig. 1,'
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a fragmenf tary portion of an element comprised in the device,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a fragmentary portion of the device with a plurality of containers supported thereomthe containers shown in Fig. 4 being of a different typeof construction than those exhibited in Fig. 1,
Fig.' 5 is a top plan view of a fragmentary portion of one of the containers exhibited in 1922. serial No. 561,983.
the lil'ge. A secondary supporting member comprises a vertically disposedbarflike body 2 having offset end portions 3 and 4 respectively, attached to the main support 1 60 ,member is substantially fiat andjis formed of a suitable metal which will permit aof the' body being ben" forwardly and then back upon itself at a plurality of .spaced-apart places 4to provide forwardly extending subj{Stantially -horizontalrest portions 6. Pairs of horizontally alinedkerfs 7 7 are made `in the side edges of the body 2 above the level of the rest portions and immediately adj acentthereto. 'A plurality of rectangular plates 8 are provided, there being a plate 8 75 (for each of thev rest-portions 6j. Each plate 8 has a mortise orslot -9 formed therein to extend inwardly from one side edge of the 'plate intermediately of the ends of the plate.
The mortise or slot 9,is of suchwidth as to engage the ends. of thekerfs or notches 7-7 when the plate is substantially horizontally disposed and is moved edgewise to effect the engagement of the mortise or slot 9 with the ends of a` pair ofkerfs ornotches 7 7. The 85 vplates 8'wil1 thus be supported both by real son ofthe engagement of the slots or mor- Y tises 9' with the notches or kerfs 7--7 .and by the rest portions (i upon whlch portions of the plates 8 are superimposed.` With the 90 organization described, relatively great weight can be sustained by the'plateslS'.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I' show a plurality of'4 boxes v10 partially disposed upon the plates 8 and maintained .thereon by holding mem- 95 bers 11 which are movable -along ythe body 2 into and out of engagement with the respective boxes. Each holding member 1l lcomprises a 'short bar-like body 12 having -a pair of arms13-13 extendingfrom the 100 opposite edges of the upper portion thereof and being bent to embrace the body 2 so that the holding member 11 can be slldably moved alongthe body 2 f the secondary support that is firmly ment laterally of the latter. Shoulders 14-14 are formed on the body 2 at appreciable distances above .the supporting portions 6 and serve to limit the downwar movements of the several holding 4members v110 11. The body 12 of each .holding member Ahas the lower portion thereof oset forheld against movev ferring now to Figs. 4 and 5, containers 16,`
41 5 engage the sides of the containers approximate to the body 2 at the-ir upper edges. It is only necessary to raise the holding members 11 in order to displace the rcon'ainers 1 0 from the platesS. Re-
having handles 1'( inthe form of loops extending laterally thereof adjacent to their upper edges, can be supported to rest upon the rest portions 6, and will be maintained thereon when the holding members 11 are moved downwardly along the bodyf2 until \the offset end portions l5 extend into the handles 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
'Ih'edeviceiis designed primarily for use in displaying green vegetables, fruits, and the like, but obviously can be used in displaying all suitablel articlesthat are commonly lrept in bulk. .'Ilh'e device may be positioned either interiorly or eXteriorly of a store-room or the like.
Obviously, my invention is suscep-tible of embodiment in forms other than that described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and I therefore consider as my own, all such modifications and adapta.-
- tions of the form herein sho-wn, as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim l. In a device of the character described,
raaaoee a supporting member having a substantially flat bar-like upright body, said body Lbeing bent forwardly' and then back upon itself at intervals to provide a plurality of Verti; cally spaced substantially horizontal resi portions, holding members slidable along the body of the support and each being associated'with one of the rest portions, and shoulders formed on the vbody of the support in position to limit the movements of the holding member toward the rest portions with which associated.
2. In a device of the character described, a substantially flat bar-like supporting member having offset end portions adapted to be attached to a fixed support, said bar-like support being bent laterally and then back upon itself atintervals along itslength' to provide a plurality of spaced rest portions 'and being provided with pairs of notches in the opposite edges thereof immediately above the level of the respective restiportions, and a. plurality of plates, each of saidplates having a slotted portion adapted to engage the notches in the bar-like support above and adjacent tol a rest portion of the support when the' plate is arranged with a portionthereof superimposed upon that particular rest portion. l
3. In a device of the character described, an upright support of substantially barlike formation, said support being fashioned to provide a substantially horizontal rest portion at a determined point along its length, and a holding member having arms l embracing the support above the rest portions and having an offset lower end portion spaced from and substantially parallel with the bar-like support, said holding member being slidable along the bar-like support toward and away from the rest portion of the latter.
WILLIAM JOHN DODD.
