PATENT OFFICE HENRIK IPSEN, F BROOKLYN NEW 'YORKV TRAY Applicationnled August 2,1929.; Serial No. 383,039.
My'invention relates to improvements inV trays for holdino' and carrying drinking lglasses and the like and it is my objectto produce a tray provided with folding handles whereby a number of trays can be stored in a small space when not in use and in which the handles When raised -Will be ri id so that the liquid in the glasses Awill not e spilled.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a top view of my ilo improved trayvvith the handles raised; Fig.
2a side view of the structure of Fig. 1 Fig. 3.a view of the structure of Fig. 1 on the` line 3--3 thereof Fig. 4 an end view, partly` in section, of the structure of Fig. 1, with the handles folded;and Fig. 5 a detail vievv of a handle connection.
The tray consists of a base plate 1 and a top plate 2, spaced apart by pillars 3. The top plate 2 is provided with apertures 4, each C9 of which is adapted toA hold axdrinking glass Y or the like Which passes therethrough and rests on the base plate 1. Parallel slots 5 Y and 6 are also made in the top plate 2 to reoeive the carrying handles which pass therethrough.
The carrying handles are in pairs and each is formed of two ilat-S-shaped side pieces 7 and `8, connectedtogether by a cross bar or handle proper 9. Lugs 10-10 and 11--11 l bars 7 and 8 are secured tothe lugs l0 and 11 and the bars 7 and 8 to the lugs 10 and 11. VThe cross bars 9 and 9 are slightly longer than the distance between the side bars 7 and 8 and 7 and 8 so that When the handles f are raised they Will interlock as best shown in Fig. 3, resulting in a rigid structure which of the drinking glasses.
. When the trays are not in use the handles are pushed down into the slots and the side are secured to the under side of the top plate 2 'adj acent the ends of the slots 5 and 6. The
may be carried Without slopping the contents be` employed to maintain plates in spaced relation. l
Heretoore such trays have been made With V the base land top .rigid handles which required a large box in packing and shipping and also a large space for storage When not in use. By my inventiona theatre, for example, usinor a large number of such trays may store tiem in a small space by simply pushing the handles vcomprising a base plate, a top `plate provided With apertures adapted toV receivedrinking glasses and a pair of parallel slots, means for maintaining the plates in spaced relation, a pair of handles each composedof S-shaped side pieces and a cross iecepivotally mount* ed on the top plate at tie slot ends and pass-y ing through the slots, vsubstantially as described.
2. tray Vfor drinking glasses and the like comprising a base plate, a top plate provided With apertures adapted to receive drinking glasses and apairof parallel slots, means Vfor maintainin the plates in spaced relation, a pair o handles each composed of S-shaped side pieces anda cross piece pivot-V ally mounted` on theunder side of the top plate at `the slot ends and passing through piece Whenraised whereby-the tWo handles fare interlocked, substantiallyV as described.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub-V scribed myname.
