PERKINS, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish-Holding riongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, `and exact description of the same, reference be-l ing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates more particularly to a pair of tongs designed primarily for holding dishes while the same are dipped' into het water to be washed so that the hands of a person need not be broughtinto contact with the hot scalding water.

It is an object of this invention to provide a pair of tongs that are simple and economic in Construction.

It is also an object of my invention to provide dish holding pads that have an adjustable or tiltable movement to adjust the same for a variety of purposes.

It is a further object of this invention to provide yieldable and pliable material for the pads and to construct the same so that the gripping portions will accommodate a large variety of dishes.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from. the disclosures in the specification and drawings.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter, vmore fully described.

Referring now to the different gures in the drawings, in which similar reference numerals refer to similar igures in the different views, it will be noted that my improved tongs has been stamped from sheet metal, and that the jaw members are formed to sustain the pads in tiltable or adjustable` relation. But it is contemplated that any the rear portions suitable material mav be used, and that the tongs may be cast or formed in, any suitable way. In the present embodiment of my invention, each tong member 1 or 2 is preferably stamped from sheet metal` in the form of av channel or, U shape, the front portions ci? which provide the handle members and 3 and 4 provide the jaw members, the tong members 1 and 2 being bent into appropriate ber being provided with an 'aperture 5 through which the other member extends and in which it is pivoted by means of a pin 6. A spring 7 is placed at a convenient form, and one mempoint between the handle members and is 1 preferably confined bv means of tongues 3 stamped fromthe handle members.

The ends of the jaws 3 and 4 are provided l with dished seats 9 centrally of which project the pins or rivets 10, which fit in slots 11l in the round heads 12 on the-.bases 13 of the padsand secure the pads to the jaws by means of proper heads on the pin or rivet.

Each pad 14 is preferably made of rubber or some pliablesubstance, and may be of anyshape or design. In the present instance, these pads are in the form of circular buttons and are provided with overlapping flanges 15, which tions of the bases 13, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. Flach flange 15 is sulficiently pliable so that it can be rolled outwardly tov admit the base 13, whereby each pad may be easily slipped` over the edges of its base 13 and easily removed anda new one substituted therefor. f

By constructing the bases 13 with the fit over the porrounded heads 12, which are of a shape to lit in the concave depressions or ldished seats 9 and providing the slots inthe heads for receiving the rivets, the pads 14 may be readily tilted as shown in Figure 1 so that the dish may be held at any suitable angle, and the inclination of the pads may be adjusted to t diiierentkinds of dishes. The rivets 10 should not hold the parts too tightly together, but should allow an easy slidable movement of the pads in their tilt- `ing movements. It should be particularly noted that the jaw members 3 and 4 are well arched outwardly so lthat glasses and the like may be securely clamped therein and that bowls and deep dishes can be securely held without breaking the same, and at the same time permitting easy access for the purpose of washing the same.

The operation is as follows:

in using my device, the tongs are gripped by the handlesanda dish is clamped between the pads on the jawsby pressing the handles together against the tension of the spring 7. The dish may then be securely held while the same is being washed, the arched jaws permitting portions ofthe dish to enter well within the jaws without being brought into contact therewith so as to break the edges ot the dish, and the pliable pads protectingthem lfrom the clamping action oit the tongs, and these pads maybe adjusted so that a dish can be readily picked up,and so that the portions Within ther jaw members 3 and l do not come into contact with the clamping action, since by properly tilting these pads the space on one side or the other thereoii within` the jaw members may be increased.

it will accordingly be observed that l have provided a novel dish tongs having pliable and yielding pads that are tiltable or adjustabie for a variety of purposes,`and that have arched jaws in combination therewith to provide workable space and surticient clearance for the dishes, and that is cheap, economical and readily manufactured.

l am aware that numerous details'of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing` from `the princip'les of this invention, and therefore dok not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

1. In aztongs, apair ofjaws,grippers,piv oted, one to each jaw, each gripper com'- prising a dished base and a yielding covering, the concave .sidesv of the basesbeing towardeach other and the coverings being on the concave sides of the bases.

2. linl a tongs, ajaw, a base pivoted to said jaw, a-covering for one face ot said base, said covering having a flange projecting past the edge oi the base and contacting the other tace thereof, whereby said covering is retained on said base.
