uri rires FLORENCE F. KIRGESNER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIG-NOR TO GEORG-E J'. KIRGESNER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
l COMBNED GRATE AND WATER HEATER.
Application led March 2, 1921. Serial No. 449,179.
T0 all lwir-0m4 it may conce/rui:
it known that l, Mrs.) FLORENCE ll'. Kinonsnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Fran cisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in a Combined Grate and later Heater, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in combination grates and water heaters for gas plates and the like wherein a tubular portion is arranged to form burner openings above the burners of the gas plate to facilitate the circulation of water to be heated in proximity to the gas burners.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improvedgrate for gas plates and the like having improved facilities for heating water while the said plate is being used for culinary purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described having improved means for concentrating the heat from the gas burners onto a utensil thereby effecting' a saving in fuel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective grate, for gas plates and the like, having simple and eiiicient means for heating water while said plate is leing used for culinary purposes.
l accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout said specification and drawings, and in which:
F ig. l is a broken plan view, partly in section, of a gas plate disclosing my iniproved grate and water heater applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the left hand end of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line of Fig. l in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings the numeral l is used to designate a gas plate of the usual standard type having the usual burners 2.
The usual grate provided with the gas plate l is removed and in place thereof I provide a grate comprising a frame 3 having formed integral therewith ribs it supporting substantially a ligure 8 tubular portion 6 forming burner openings 7 above the burners 2 and separated longitudinally as at -9 in the central portion of said figure 8 to provide for expansion and contraction of said tubular portion due to varying ternperatures under which the device operates.
The tubular portion 6 is provided, at one end thereof, with an inlet l1 and an outlet l2, the inlet being arranged below the plane of the outlet to facilitate circulation of water being heated within the tubular portion 6. rThe inlet and outlet 1l and l2 respectively, may be connected to a suitable boiler or reservoir, not shown, whereby a supply of hot water may be maintained until required for use.
A suitable drain 14 is provided at the opposite end of the tubular portion 6 and closed by a suitable plug 16.
` The ribs l are arrano'ed to support a utensil 18 to be heated, for culinary or other purposes, a slight distance above the burner openings 7 in the tubular portion 6, and said tubular portion 6 is likewise supported a slight distance above the burners 2 of the gas plate l by said ribs 4.
y means of this arrangement the burner opening 7 in the tubular portion 6 provides a. flue to facilitate the concentration of heat from the burner 2 onto the bottom of the utensil 1S, and said heat is further concentrated onto the bottom of said utensil 18 by means of the space between the top of the tubular portion 6 and the bottom of said utensil 18.
The result of this direct application of heat is a direct saving in fuel as well as a saving of time in heating said utensil 18 to a given temperature as heat which would be otherwise dissipated and radiated into the surrounding` atmosphere is carried by the created draft. as disclosed by the arrows in Fig. 3 of the drawings, directly onto the utensil to be heated.
The separation longitudinally of the ce11- tral portion of the iigure 8 formed by the tubular portion 6 is also an important feature of the invention for the reason that the tubular portion 6 may readily contract and expand under varying temperatures to which it is exposed during` the use and nonuse of the burners.
As the device is composed substantially of one piece it is obvious that it may be easily and cheaply produced and at the same time effect a saving of fuel and time when used for culinary purposes and also heat water whichmay be stored in a tank or othervcontaincr, not shown, for future use, without the additional expenditure offuel `to heat said water.
A still further advantage to be obtained from the use of this devise is that heat will be absorbed in heating thewater instead of being diffused or radiated into the compartment or room Within Which the culinary process is being performed; thereby preventing excessive heat due to cooking7 which, during the summer months in Warm climates; would otherwise occur.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined grate and Water heater comprisinga grate adapted for mounting upon a plate above burners connected thereto; a tubular portion formed integrally with the grate and arranged to form substantially a figure B Water passage separated longitudinally in the central portion thereof to permit expansion and contraction of said tubular portions under varying tempe 'atures and to form burner openings above the burners of the gas plate.
2. A combined grate and Water heater for gas plates comprising a grate arranged for mounting upon a gas plate above lnuners connected thereto; a tubular portion formed upon said grate and shaped substantially as a figure to form a Water passage, said tubular portion being separated longitudinally in the central portion thereof to provide for expansion and contraction and to form burner openings above the burners of the gas plate; an inletand an outlet communicating with the tubular portion and arranged to be connected to a Water tank; and a drain arranged t0 permit drawing of Water from the tubular portion Without dis connecting the same from the tank.
3. A combined grate and Water heater for gas plates comprising a grate arranged for mounting upon a gas plate above burners provided thereon; a tubular portion formed integrally With the grate and shaped substantially as a figure 8 to form a Water passage, saidtubular portion being separated longitudinally along the central portion thereof to provide for expansion and contraction and to form burner openings above the burners of the plate; an outlet passage communicating with the tubular portion; and an inlet opening into the tubular portion below said outlet to facilitate circulation of Water through said tubular portion.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
FLORENCE F. KIRGESNER.
