To all whom it may concern. i
Be it known that 1, CHARLES l i anrnns, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the city of Chicago county of Cook, and State t Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a l/Vater Heater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same reference being had to the accompa nying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
In practically all water heaters of the burner and coiltype the cold water to be heated is admitted at the lower end of the water coil and passes upwardly through the coil to be heated by meansot air which is drawn into the lower portion of the heater to be heated by the burner, and is then caused to rise in the heater around the water coil and be drawn out through a flueor draft pipe connected to the upper portion or end of the water heater to cause a forced draft therethrough. A great amount of heat is thus wasted due to the fact that the heated air only acts in its upward passage through the heater to heat the water, and is then exhausted while still containing sutlicient heat units adapted for further heating This invention relates to an improved form of a water heater wherein the air which is heated by a burner is permitted to pass upwardly through a water coil and then pass downwardly around the water coil to be exhausted from the lower portion of the heater without forced draft to thoroughly heat the water and at ford an arrangement whereby the heated air acts in both its upward and downward passage l'lll'fllltl'l. the heater to utilize substantially all the heat units in the heated air lhtllfl'e it is permitted to be exhausted from the lower portion ol the heater.

It is also an object of the invention to construct a water heater wherein the loops of the water coil are disposed. closely together to permit heated air to pass 'upwardly through the coil and then downwardly therearound to utilize practically all ortthe heat units in the heated airfor heating the water circulating in the coil before the air is permitted to escape from an air 6 outlet pipe positioned at the lower portion of the heater. i
It is animporta-nt object of the invention to construct a water heater wherein the heated air is caused to circulate upwardly through and downwardly around a water coil to heat the water therein before the air is permitted to leave the lower portion of the heaterthrough an exhaust pipe wherein the draft has been checked.

An arrangement is thus afforded whereby the heated air within the heater utilizes substantially all of its heat units to heat the water circulating in the coil 18, both as said heated air passes upwardly through the coil'and'as it passes downwardly around the exterior of the coil. The water heater is thus highly efiicient and results in a minimum waste of heat, since the air passing outwardly through the exhaust pipe 16, has practically exerted a heating effect upon the water in" the coil during the entire upward and downward passage'of the air through the sleeve 12.
The tight or close arrangement of the loops of the'coil 18, prevents theheatcd air from passing therebetwecn untilithe upper end of the coil is reached, and since there is no forced draft or suction in the heater the heated air does not readily pass; from vthe heater. The coil 18-, being heated from both sides causes the water flowingin'thecoil pipes to be rapidlyheated, thereby produc ing a water heaterof simple-and effective design wherein the heated air circulates through the heater and-isnexhaustedz with out suction or forced draft through; the lower: portion of the heateri V I am' aware that numerous detailsof con struction may be "varied-through :a wide range without departing; from the princis ples of this invention, and-I therefore'do not purpose limiting the patent-grantedotherwise than necessitated by the prior art;
I claim as my invention: I 1

A water heater embracing an outerv casing a burner therein, an aperturedparti tion wall in said casing above said burner, a downwardly directed hood connected 1 insaid partition wall above said burnen a water coil in said casing projecting into said hood, an inner casing for enclosingM-saidwater coil having an opening in 'the lower portion thereof, saidburner adapted to heat the 'air in said inner casing to c'ause the heatedair to rise-in said-coil and be deflected downwardly by the closed upper end of said inner casing to cause said heated'air to heat the water in saidcoil both by the upward and downwardmovement 'ofsaid heated air a waste gas exhaust pipe con nected withthe lower portion-"of said outer casing above said. partition wallrto afford v a means for the escape of thespentqases outer portion of'thecoi-l to setup a circa-j rated -J a heater-for heatingahecan: mesald casing, a closed inner casing enclosing said coil and adapted to cause the heated air to pass upwardly through said coil and then downwardly around said coil to heat the water, a waste gas exhaust pipe connected to the lower portion of the outer casing, and a plate supporting said inner casing and having an opening therein to check the draft in said exhaust pipe.

In a water heater of the class described, an outer casing, a partition plate secured in the lower portion thereof, a water coil disposed within said outer casing projecting downwardly through said partition plate, a burner therebelow, a closed inner casing on said partition plate enclosing said coil and having an opening in the lower side 'portion thereof, said burner adapted to heat the air in the heater to cause the heated air to pass upwardly and, then downwardl around said coil within said inner casing to heat the water passing through said coil and a waste gas exhaust pipe connected in the lower portion of said outer casing above said partition plate to permit the spent gases issuing from the opening in said inner casing to pass outwardly through said exhaust pipe, said partition plate provided with an opening below the inner end of said exhaust pipe for checking any draft therein.
