To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALFRED T.FOWLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of .Dallas and State of Texas, have'invented certain new and use ful Improvements in ater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved and simplified water heater especially designed for application to standard types of boilers whereby the latter is utilized as a reservoir for receiving the heated water from the heating apparatus.
Another object is the provision of a water heater of this character embodying a novel type of two-part jacket or casing conveniently applicable to the lower portion of conventional types of boilers and forming a passage causing the circulation of heat and the products of combustion from the burner about a portion of the boiler thereby materially assisting in the heating operation and providing for maximum utilization of the fuel expended.
lVith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts which will be more fully described in'the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

Fig. 4: represents a perspective view of one of the parts of the boiler jacket or cas- 111 lg. 5 represents a perspective View of the outlet pipe or flue Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 indicates a well known type of boiler stand or support carrying a circular rim 6 at its upper terminal of approximately the same diameter as the lower flanged portion of the boiler 7 which the stand is designed to support. Ordinarily the boiler is supported directly upon the Specification of Letters Patent.

rim 6, however in applying my invention to use I provide a supplementary support 1ng element designated by the numeral 8 which is substantially in the form of a ring being provided at its upper portion with a groove provided with internal transverse ribs 9 upon which the lower flanged terminal of the boiler 7 is supported and which provides, between the ribs, a series of radial air passages permittlng free circulation 0t air between the boiler and the walls of the groove. The lower portion of the ring is provided with a depending flange 10 having a serpentine lower edge resting upon the rim 6 of the stand. The prominent portions of the irregular edge 11 engaging the rim 6 provide a series of openings constituting air passages for the heated air and products of combustion arising from the burner, to be hereinafter more fully-described.
A jacket or casing consisting of two separable and substantially semi-cylindrical sections 11 and 12 are assembled in proper relation about thelower portion of the boiler 7 and extenda distance below the lower terminal of the latter providing a depending apron constituting an inclosure for the burner which is located directly bneaththe lower portion of the boiler 7. Each part of the jacket is provided with a double metallic wall spaced apart to provide an internal chamber for the reception of an as bestos or other non-heat conducting lining 13 and the opposed'vertical edges of one section are provided with pivoted hooks 14: or equivalent fastening devices engageable with lugs or keepers 15, on the other section whereby the sections are retained in properly assembled position about the boiler structure 7. The.upper portions of the two semi-cylindrical sections 11 and 12 are restricted in diameter as indicated at 16 so as to snugly fit about the boiler 7 and prevent the escape of the products of combustion from the chamber located between. the
exterior wall of the boiler 7 and the jacket and an ornamental two-part ring 17 is separably seated upon the upper restricted terminal of the jacket to maintain the latter in predetermined position upon the boiler.
- A hollow heating drum 18 is located directly beneath the boiler 7 and is connected with the lower portion thereof by a water inlet or supply pipe 19 which is preferably connected with the heating drum at a point adjacent the center of the latter whereas the water outlet ,pipe 20 having connection with the upper portion of the boiler 7 and with the hot water supply pipe 21 is connected with the side portion of the drum 18.
The lower portion of the heating drum 18 is connected with a drain pipe 22 havinga valve 23 connected with the terminal portion thereof to facilitate cleansing and drainageof the boiler 7. A preferred type of gaseous fuel burner 24: is located directly beneath the drum 18 and is so arranged that the flame therefrom is directed upon the outer surface of the drum. The burner 24: is-supplied with fuel by a valved supply pipe 25. r
A series of baflie plates 26 which are substantially V-shaped in cross section are secured at their web portions to the inner surfaces of the jacket sections 11 and 12 and the inner edges ofthe plates lie in contact with the outer surface of the boiler 7. The plates 26 are arranged at uniformly spaced intervals within the jacket in such manner as to provide a series of vertical passages through which the heated air and products of combustion arising from the burner 24c are conducted. A vertical flue 27 is arranged in the space between the jacket section 11 and the boiler 7 and is provided at its lower terminal with bafiie flanges 28 which extend trans- 30, versely between and. close the passage bet ween two of the adjacent register baffles 26. ihe lower portion of the flue is'provided'in its opposed side walls .with inlet openings 29 through which the products of combustion enter the flue after being caused to travel downwardly between the flue and the two adjacent baflies 26. The upper portion of the flue27 is provided with a laterally eXtend-,
ing hollow extension 30 which extends exteriorly of the jacket section 11 and'is designed for connection with a flue pipe or other device for conducting the products of combustion from the water heater.
Owing to the sectional structurejof the jacket the heater may be conveniently applied to substantially-any type of vertical boiler 7 and by interposing the ring 8 between the lower edge ofthe boiler' and the, stand rim 6 free circulation of air, between the boiler and the stand is aflorded.
It is also evident that only slight modification in the structure of the conventional types of boilers is necessary to adapt the invention to use thereon as nearly all types of boilers are provided with the usual drain pipe having connection with the lower portion thereof and this pipe is utilized by the applicant to forma connection between the lower portion of the boiler and the heating drum 18, the pipe 20 being applied to con- Leeaaet the openings 29 in the flue 27 insures a fair circulation of the products. of combustion about the lower portion of the boiler thereby accelerating the heating actlon of the contents thereof and utilizing such products of combustion directly heating ,the water contained within the boiler preliminary to its admission to the heating drum 18. i
What I claim is:
1. In an attachment for boilers comprisu ing a removable sectional acket seated about the lower section of a hot water boiler, a series. of vertical, equally spaced V-shaped baffle'plates arranged internally of the jacket and-maintaining the latter in spaced relation to the wall of the boiler and providing a plurality of vertical passages for directing the air currents within said jacket, a flue extending vertically within the jacket having inlet ports inthe lower portion thereof for receiving the products of combustion within the jacket and an outlet opening in the upper portion of said flue arranged eX-- teriorly of. the jacket, said flue being disposed in spaced relation to the baflle plates. 2. In an attachment for a hot water boiler comprising a two-part cylindrical acket adapted for application to a boiler and rovided with a restricted upper termlnal adapted to snugly fit the boiler, a plurality of baffle plates arranged in the jacket and terminating below the upper restricted terminal thereof, a flue arranged internally of the jacket provided at its lower end with an inlet-openingand in its upper terminal with an outlet opening arranged exteriorly of the jacket, "a horizontal bafile connected with the lower portion ofthe flue below the inlet opening and extending between two adjacent of the first mentioned baflies.
3. In a hot water heater, a jacket adapted for application to a boiler, a plurality of vertical battle plates arranged internally of the jacket, a vertically disposed flue extending centrally between two of the adjacent tween the two adjacent vertical baflie plates,
