TOBACCO PIPE ATTACHMENT. FILED JULY 19.1520.

Patented Feb. 13, 1923.
UNITED STATES NATHANIEL PALMQUIST, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
TOBACCO-PIPE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed July 19,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL PALM- QUIST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has for its primary object the production of an improvement in the general construction presented in my pending application, No. 387,249, filed June 7, 1920, and more particularly adapted and designed as a tobacco pipe accessory.
A further object of the invention is the production of a pipe drawing and cleaning device, inexpensive in production and readily applicable to the pipe.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consisting of the construction, combination, and novel arrangement of parts, will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, of which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical section of a pipe, with the device of my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the device.
Although I have herein illustrated and described but one embodiment suitable for practicing the invention, I would not be understood as being limited to such specific construction, for various alterations may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as designed in the appended claim.
Referring now to the illustrations, 3 represents a conventional form of pipe-bowl, having the usual bore, 4:, within which I insert a substantially U-shaped wire, the end portions of which are bent outwardly and downwardly, as at 6, and the extreme end portions thereof are bent outwardly and preferably sharpened, as at 7. The U 1920. Serial No. 397,313.
shaped member, 5, is preferably of more or less resilient material, and the arms thereof 7 are so related that they tend to spring outwardly from each other, and are normally positioned within thepipe in spaced relation to the wall of the bowl to permit formation of the desired crust.
In applying the device, it is inserted in the bowl to such a depth that the looped end portions, 6, extend slightly above the rim of the bowl, as seen in Fig. 1. Then by rotating the device within the bowl by means of engaging the end portions, 6, with the fingers or with a coin as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the prongs, 7, will cut an annular groove in the wall of the bowl and seat themselves therein, thus holding the device against displacement andthe arms thereof in spaced relation to the inner periphery of the bowl to permit formation of the crust.
In operationthe wire, when heated by burning tobacco, through capillary attraction entirely dissipates all moisture which may accumulate in the bowl, either from the tobacco or pipe-stem. As the device keeps the tobacco dry, the tobacco may be entirely consumed, and the pipe may be readily emptied by first rotating the device within the bowl to free the contents and then inverting the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A pipe-b0wl attachment consisting of a substantially U-shaped wire adapted to be inserted in the bowl, the end portions of the wire being bent downwardly adjacent the remote sides of the wire to hold the wire in spaced relation to the bowl. and provide loops to project a distance above the bowl whereby the attachment may be rotated within the bowl, the extreme end portions of the wire being bent outwardly to engage the periphery of the bowl.
. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of July, 1920.
NATHANIEL PALMQUIST.
