' citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet Deliveries, fully described and represented in the fol lowing specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part'ot the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sheet delivery mechanism and it has been designed particularly for a pile delivery in which the sheets are deposited superposed inpiles.
In pile deliveries or in piling delivered sheets as they come from the press it is desirable that the sheets hedeposited differ'ent piles so that time will he given for the printed surface of a deposited sheet to dry before another sheet is deposited thereon so as to prevent sinutting of the 'sheets.:

with a machine in which a web is forwarded and from which the sheets to be piled are cut, though it will be understood that the invention is intended for and may be used in other relations. As shown, there is a web W-which may come from a printing mechanism not illustrated. This web W is forwarded by forwarding means, shown as a pair of rolls 1, 2 mounted in the frames 3 of the machine. In the construction illustrated, this web is severed into sheets by a suitable cutting mechanism, the severance preferably taking place after the web has been seized by certain sheet taking devices hereinafter referred to. Arranged at one side of the sheet forwarding rolls is provided a sheet transferring mechanism by which the sheets are transferred sidewise of the forwarding mechanism and in one direction, and deposited at three or more points, the sheets 1n the particular delivery illustrated being piled, and in 'machines constructed in the best forms, one transferring mechanism is employed for transferring the sheets and for alternately depositing them at the points of final delivery.
As shown, this transferring mechanism comprises a travelling carrier in the form of a pair of chains 8, 9, these chains being arranged on opposite sides of the machine and passing over sprockets 10, 11, mounted on shafts 12, 13 arranged at opposite ends of the delivery and extending across the machine, one of these shafts, as 12, being a driven shaft driven through suitable connections, hereinafter referred to. This carrier is provided with suitable sheet taking devices shown in the form of grippers 14, these grippers being oppositely arranged on the carrier chains so as to grip the sheet at each edge and forward it evenly. V
In the best constructions and in the machine shown, the sheets will be cut from the web while the web is being held by the grip pers. To effect this the forward sprockets 10 and the shaft therefor, are arranged in advance of the cuttin cylinders 4, 5, before referred to, between t em and the forwarding rolls, and the cutting cylinders are recessed at their ends, as indicated at 15, to permit the grippers to pass them while holding on to the sheet. The sheet taking grippers, where grippers are employed for taking the sheets, are provided on the carrier in pairs and in suflicient numbers to handle thesheets which are to be delivered.
The specific construction of the grippers may be somewhat varied, but as illustrated they include a fixed jaw 16 (see Fig. 5) and a movable jaw 17 pivoted to a stud 18 on an arm 19 secured to a block 20 fast to the side of the carrier chain. These grippers are normally held in closed .or sheet gripping with a can: 22 which contacts with a roll 23.
co-operating with the movable jaw of the gripper 17, before referred to, and by depressingit the jaws are opened to take the sheet. With this construction the sheet is positively held while it is being cut from the web and while it is being transferred to its point of delivery.
In the particular construction illustrated the sheets are deposited in piles, and four such piles are shown marked 24:, 25, 26, and 27, andthe carrier is provided with sets of grippers for' taking sheets for delivery to each pile. Further, in the particular machine illustrated, the sheets are delivered successively to the different piles, that is, sheets a are delivered to pile 24, sheets 6 to pile 25, sheets 0 to pile 26, and sheets (l to pile'27. To effect this, operating means are provided for opening the grippers at the proper oints to deliver each fourth sheet to the same pile. While these means may be varied somewhat in construction, as shown these gripper operating means are normally in such position as to permit the grippers to pass them, each means. operating at every fourth sheet to cause the grippers to drop such sheet on the pile which it. controls. As shown where the sheets are to be piled in four piles there are provided three of these movable gripper controlling mechanisms and one stationary one, as for the last pile a movable mechanism is not necessary. These movable mechanisms are indicated generally in Figs. 1 to t by the numerals 28, 29 and 30, and the stationary controlling mechanism is indicated at 31. The movable mechanisms and the means for operating them are the same, and it is necessary to describe but one in detail. It may be stated here, however, that each movable mechanism is. controlled by an individual cam, these cams being indicated in-Fig. 6 by the numerals 32, 33 and 34:, these controlling cams being carried on a shaft 35 extendin on the frames 3, before referred to.
Referring now to F ig. 5, which shows one movable gripper controlling mechanism in detail, there is provided, a cam shoe 37 car ried on an arm 38 fast on a rock shaft 39 extending across the machine, one of these shoes being provided at each side of the maacross the machine and taking 7 bearing 1n brackets 36 55 I hand en er the figure and the controlling at 41 an operating rod 42, at one side of the machine. This rod 42 at its other end is fast to an arm 43 on a short rock shaft 44 mounted in the frame 3, before referred to, this rock shaft also having secured thereto a second arm 45 connected at its end with a rod 4C6 which terminates in a yoke 47 passing about the shaft35, before referred to. This yoke carries acam roll 48 which runs on one of the operating cams, as the cam 32.
Fast on the shaft 39 is a second arm 49 to the end of which is secured a spring rod construction, indicated at 50. The cam 32 is so formed that the high part of the cam i the through the rods 46 and 42 holds the shaft 39 rocked against the spring to hold the cam shoe 37 out of the path of the roll 23 on the grippers, so that the grippers normally pass under the shoe without being operated there by. When thetime has come for a sheet, as
.sheet 03, to he deposited'on pile 27, the low part of the cam 32 permits the shaft 39 tov be rocked by the spring rod 50 and the shoe drops so as to be in the path of the grippers thereby causing therolls 23 to actuate themovable jaws 17 of the grippers and cause the sheet on the pile.
Similarly each of the gripper controlling mechanisms 29 and 28 are operated from the cams 33 and 34, respectively through rods 51 and 52 and connections similar to those already described.
The fixed gripper controller 31 is also in the form of a cam shoe and operates each pairof grippers as they come along, but as only" one pair of grippersat this point have a sheet, that is, sheet a, it is unnecessary to move this sheet out of the way to permit the grippers to pass under it without operating.

With the construction as described, the sheets are delivered at three or more points and all with the same side up, and a sufiicient length of time is provided for the sheets to dry. Furthermore, all the mechanisms are arranged at one side of the sheet forwarding rolls so that an economical arrangement of space is provided for and a simple mechanism for efiecting the'deppsit ing of the sheets provided. It will, of course, be understood that the sheets may be delivered. to the piles in orders other than successive, it being simply a question of the timing of the cams for operating the gripper controlling mechanisms.
Where thesheets are deposited in piles, as in the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated, means will preferably be best constructions means will be provided for evening up the sheets as the piles increase in size, and each pile of sheets is supported. -The pile supports are operated in a similar manner and a description of one will suffice for all. As shown, referring to Fig. 5, the sheets are piled on to tables 54- supported in parallel carrier'chains 55, 56, which pass. around sprockets 517 and 58. One pair of these sprockets, as sprockets 58 are driven through gears 59 from gears 60 on a shaft 61 extending around the machine and common to all the piles. This shaft 61 is provided at one end with a driving gear 62 meshing with a gear 63 on a short shaft- 64:. This short shaft has fast thereon a ratchet 65 which is given a step by step movement through a pawl 66 operated from a rod 67 through a roll 68 (seeFig. 6) and a cam 69 on the other end of the shaft 35, before referred to. With this construction the pile tables are given a step by step downward movement as the pile increases in size. V l
Operated also from the cam shaft 35, before referred to, isthe mechanism preferably employed for evening up the sheets'as they are deposited on the piles. As illustrated this evening mechanism includes a vibratin'gstriker which strikes a ainst the edges of the sheets and forces t em against an abutment.- One of these strikers and the abutment is provided foreach pile and are I 125 all operated simultaneously. As shown the striker consists of a plate or plates 70.
carried onan arm 71 (see Fig. 5) on a rock shaft 72 mounted in the frames 3 of the machine, before referred to, this shaft being rocked against a spring rod construction- -?3. The shaft is rocked by means of an to one end of a rod 84 which operates the next adjacent shaker plate. These plates shake the sheets against abutments or stops in the form of plates 85 carried on bars 86 supported in any suitable manner, as on studs 87 in the machine frame. WVith this construction the sheets as they are piled on the piling tables are evened up edgewise.
The various mechanisms referred to may be driven in any suitable manner. As illustrated there is a large driving gear 88 suitably mounted on a shaft 89 in the frames 3 of the machine, this gear being driven from a gear 90 operated from any suitable source ofpower not illustrated. The forwarding roll 1 is driven from the gear 90 through an intermediate gear 91 and a gear 92 on the shaft 93" of the forwarding roll. This gear 92 also drives the sprockets 10 through an intermediate gear 94 and a gear 95 (see Fig. 6) on the sprocket shaft 12. The cam shaft 35 is driven from the gear 88 through a gear 96 carried by a shaft 97 'ournaled in the side frames 3, this gear mes ing with a gear 98 on the shaft 35. The shaft 97 also carries a gear 99 which meshes with a gear 100 on the shaft 101 of the cutting cylinder 5, and bywhich the lower cutting cylinder is driven. This cutting cylinder shaft also carries a gear 102 which meshes with a gear 103 on the shaft 104 of the upper cutting cylinder 4, whereby the upper cylinder 4 is driven.
With the constructionv described, :1 ve efficient deliver has been provided for the purposes speci ed, and while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, itwill be understood that various changes may be made in the specific construction and arrangements of the parts without departing from the inventionas do fined in the claims annexed hereto.
What- I claim is:
I. In a. delivery, the combination of forwarding means, and means for transferring sheets from the forwarding means and depositing the sheets at three or more points in the line of travel of the sheets and at one side of the sheet forwarding means.

5. In a delivery, the combination of forwarding means, three or more pile supports arranged in line at one side of the forwarding means, and means for transferring sheets from the forwarding means and depositing them successively on the pile supports.
6. In a delivery, the combination of forwarding means, means for cutting sheets from a web, three or more pile supports arranged in line at one side of the forwarding means, and means for transferring the cut sheets from the cutting mechanism and depositing them successively on the pile supports.
7. In a delivery, the combination of web forwarding means, means for cutting sheets from the web, av sheet transferring mechanism provided with sheet taking devices, means for actuating the devices to take the Web before it is cut and to hold the sheet after the cut, three or more pile supports arranged at one side of the forwarding means, and means whereby thesheet taking devices are causedto deposit the sheets successively on the pile supports.
8.11; a delivery, the combination of web forwarding means, means for cutting sheets from the Web, a sheet transferring mechanism provided with sheet taking devices,
means for actuating the devices to take the Web before it is cut and to hold the sheet after the cut, and means whereby the sheet taking devices are caused to deposit the sheets at three or more points in the line of travel of the sheets and at one side of the sheet forwarding means.
9. In a delivery, the combination of forwarding means, three or more pile supports arranged in line at one side thereof, a trayelling carrier, sheet taking devices thereon, and devices for actuating the sheet talaiing devices to deposit successive sheets successively on the piles.

In a delivery, the combination of for warding means, three or more pile supports arranged at one side thereof, a, carrier travelling over the piles, sheet gripperson the carrier normally held. in sheet holdes es ing position, and devices, one for actuating the rippersto release successive sheets over iflerent iles.
11. In a delivery, the com ination of for warding means, three or more pile supports arranged in line at one side thereof, a carrier travelling over the piles, sheet taking grippers on the carrier, normally held in sheet holding position, and a fixed device for the last pile, and movable devices for the other piles for actuating the grippers to ,release successive sheets over difierent piles.

In a delivery, the combination of forwarding means, three or more pile supports arranged in line at one-side thereof, a carfor each pile rier travelling over the piles, sheet tahng grippers on the carrier normallyheld in sheet holding position, movable operating devices for actuating the grippers to release a sheet, a controller shaft, and earns thereon one for each device for controlling the movement thereof.
