Be it known that I, .AnNoLD A. Sorrwan'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunellen, in the county of liliddlcsex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lm )rovcments in Sheet- Handling h lachines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for operating upon sheets and more especially to mechanism in or auxiliary to a printing machine for operating upon previously printed and usually folded sheets, including mechanism receiving, folded sheets from a folding mechanism and then slitting and delivering them. 4'
()bjects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will, be obvious herefrom, or may be ascertained through practice with the invention.
The invention consists in the novel parts,
constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constit-nting'a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to ca;- plain the principles of the invention.

In the exemplary embodiment of the invention disclosed herein, the main features thereof comprise novel devices or mechanisms designed to cooperate with a fast running printing andfolding machine for transferring the folded sheets from the folding mechanism to the delivery mechanism, and in conjunction therewith de vices for slitting a long folded sheet into a plurality of signatures.
The mechanism transfers the folc ed sheets by their folded edge from the folding jaw to, and registers it preparatory to slitting by means of, one or more registering: jaws, the registering action being effected by a difference in speed between the folding jaw and the registering jaw, the latter in the embodied instance travelling more slowly. These mechanisms also act to gradually slow down a folded sheet or group of signatures from a relatively rapid sheet cutting or sheet collecting and f line: movement to a relatively very slow delivery.
More particularly, in this exemplary embodiment, the relatively long folded sheet is delivered from a relatively fast rotating folding jaw to a more slowly rotating registering and transferring jaw on a slower moving delivery cylinder. the folding jaw delivering or transferring the sheet directly to the registering aw.
The long folded sheet is thereby positioned and registered on the delivery cylinder preparatoryto slitting, it being preferable as at pr sent adv1sed to effectthe slitting; on the delivery cylinder. After the folded sheet is so held and registered, it is, slit into i a plurality of signatures, and preparatory to the slitting, a plurality of holding ,{IIIP- pers grip each part or section of the folded sheet which will constitute a, separate signature when the relatively long folded sheet is slit in a direction transversely to its fold.

lin accordance with one feature of the inigention, and as already generally stated, the long folded. sheet. or group of folded together sheets is transversely slid into a plu rality of signatures. This is effected in the present embodiment (see Figs. 1, 3, 6 and. 'i'), by means of rotary slitters 61, which are mounted on-shaft 63, and arc/shown as three in number. These slitters 61 are arranged along the cylinder i0, whereby the longfolded group of sheets or signature, is.transversely slit into foursignatures. lVith the collecting cylinder, as already described, collecting four sheets in superposition and folding them off simultaneously, and thereafter slitting the long folded group of sheets into four signatures, there is produced. at each. folding operation four signatures of sixteen pages each, or sixty-four pages in all. The s'litters (31 cooperate with corresponding elements, such as grooves 62, formed in the cylinder 40 (see Fig. 8).
To provide for holding the folded sheet firmly during the slitting operation,-ai1d to provide also for holding the separated or slit apart signatures after the slitting and prior to delivery, a plurality of cooperating grippers are provided, which grasp the group of sheets at the folded edge, just after the release thereof by the folding jaw 24, and the taking thereof by the hold;- jaw 41, and prior-to the slitting operation. These grippers hold the sheets or signatures until they are released for delivery. There are two such gripper mechanisms-shown on cylinder 40, a semi-circumference apart, e eh cooperating -with the. corresponding holding jaw or jaws 41. One description will. suilice for both groups, they may be the same or similar inconstruction. V
In the embodied form of construction, thedesired number of grippers 65 are prw vided in, each such mechanism, preferably one gripper 65 at either side of each of the rotary slitters 61. The grippers 65 are mounted within the cylinder t0 and. are preferably of the type which swing back below the ieriphery of the cylinder 40 when opened. As embodied, the grippers 65 are fixed on a shaft66 (Figs. 3, 41-, 5, 6, 7 and 8) which is journaled in cylindereO and is disposed longitudinally thereof. 7

In the present preferred form, the folding aws travel or rotate at approximately half the peripheral speed of the collecting cylinder 25, tne motion of the folding jaw on its carrier con'ipensa ing for this, and in turn the delivery cylinder it travels or rotates at approximately half the peripheral speed of the folding aw, for the purpos s already stated.
Suitable means are providedfor receiving the folded and slit signatiiires from the cylinder. ll), and these may be of any desired or convenient form. As shown herein (Fig. 1) a usual form of belt or apron delivery is provided, comprisinn' a belt 88, running over rollers 84:, and driven in any suitable manner. Stripping fingers 85 cooperate to insure the delivery oi the signa tnres from the cylinder to the belt.
The manner of operation of the mechanism described will be understood from the foregoing, but it may be stated by way of resume as follows: In Fig, 3 the mechanism is shown just prior to the release by the folding aws 2%, hi of the folded edge of the long signature (which is tour pages long), from the tolding jaws, and just as the folded edge is registering against the jaw .13 beneath the head 12. At the lower end oil? Fig. 3, the grippers (35 and holdingjaw 41 are approaching the delivery position where they will both release the sheet.
