To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Delivery Mechanism for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide novel means for delivering the product of printing press in flat-sheets either in one or two piles, the sheets when delivered in two piles being arranged side by side, an interposed partition being utilized in connection with the 'joggers for the proper stacking of the sheets. i
1y invention includes means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, and means for taking the advance edge of theweb at the speed of the web, carrying the web through the cutting means and transferring the sheets out therefrom.
My invention also includes means for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel after they have been severed from the web, and means for insuring the feeding of the sheets to the slitting mechanism absolutely square with the side edges of the sheets so that the sheets will be accurately slit. 1

One of the coactingrotary cutters is located within the path of the endless carrier, and the endless carrier is herein shown as downwardly inclined.
The sheets are slit'longitudinally' of their travel on the cylinder 16, in the present in stance, into two sections by providing a slitwith a slitting disk 32 coacting ting shaft 31 I with the slitti g cylinder 16. The side grip pers 26 are operated by fixed cams 33, at the,
proper point to grasp the side edges of the web near the beginning of the rectilinear portion of their travel away from the receiving end of the endless carrier. Fixed cams 3d are arranged in position to open the side grippers 26 near the end of the rectilinear portion of their travel toward the delivery end of the carrier at the proper time'to transferthesheets-cut from the web to the grippers on the slitting cylinder 16.
A fixed cam 35 is arranged in position to successively operate the grippers 18 and 19 of the slitting cylinder to cause them to close upon'the heads ofthe sheets as they are fed from the endless carrier and to open. the grippers to transfer the heads of the sheets to the grippers 22 on the transfer-cylinder 20. A fined cam 36 is arranged inposition to operate the grippers 22 of the transfer cylinder to cause them to receive the sheets successively from the grippers 18 and 19 of the slitting cylinder andtransfer them to their respective head grippers 15 on the endless delivery carrier. A fixed cam 3? is arranged in position to successively operate the head grippers 15 of the endless delivery carrier to cause them to receive the heads of the sheets from the grippers 22 of the ransfer cylinder 20. A. fixedcam 38 is arrangedin position to successively operate the head grippers 15 to cause them to release the heads of the sheets when over the. delivery table 9.
A longitudinally arranged verticalpartition39 is located betweeirthe delivery table 9 and the under sideof the endless delivery carrier and the pairs of slit sheets are delivered side by side upon opposite sides of the said partition against the front stop d0. Rear and side joggers 4&1 and 41* are provided for the sheets, which side joggers serve to the sheets againstthe partition 39' for insuring, together with the front stop 40, and back joggers il, a proper piling of the sheets on the delivery table S). A retarding device is arranged in position to act upon the tail portions of each pair of slit sheets as the are released by their set of head grippers 15 of the endless delivery carrier, which retarding device comprises aseries of-rocking levers 4-2 and a series of coacting yielding fingers 4. .3, preferably .-provided with rollers H at their-ends, be-
tween which levers and rollers thesheets are drawn by-the head gripperslfi. The rocking levers -12 are carried by a: rock shaft which is r clred by an arm 46 connected bya rod 47 to the crank disk 48 ofa rotary shaft d9. Guides 52 are arranged in position to sup port the sheets along their path of trave from the rotary cutters 3, 4, to the slitting cylinder 16.
The geared connection between the several parts is as follows :The shaft 17 of the slitting cylinder 16 is driven through the train ofgears 53, 54;, 55, 56. The rotary cutters are driven from the gear 5%- through the gear 57, and the endlessweb feeding carrier has its side chains 23 exteriorly toothed and driven bygears 58 on the shaft 5 of the rotary cutter 3, at the speed of the The transfer cylinder shaft 21 is'driven from the slittingcylinder shaft 17, through the gears 59, 69. The endless delivery carrier is driven from the gear 60, through the gears 61., 62, 63; and the shaft T9 is driven from the gear 61, through the gears 64, 65. The slitter shaft 31 is driven from the slittingccylinder shaft 17, through the gears 59, 66. The gear 6? of the rotary tucker-29,.meshes with the gear 59. The geared connection between the several parts is such that the slitting cylinder has a surface speed slightly higher than the speed of the web and the surfacespeed of the web feeding endless carrier. The transfer cylinderand the endless delivery carrier have the same surface speed as the slitting cylinder. l
The slitting cylinder has each of its sheet carrying surfaces a:littl.e longer than the sheet, thereby leaving an open space between the sheets suficient to permit the coaction of the transfer cylinder grippers with the slitting cylinder grippers when taking the sheets from the slitting cylinder.
In operation: The side grippers of the endless web feeding carrier engage the side edges of the-traveling web at the speed thereof and carry the web through the rotary cutters where'thc sheetfis cut from the web. These side grippers feed the head of the sheet to thegrippers on the slitting cylinder, therotaryv tucker 29 insuring the grasping of the head of the sheetby the slitting cylinder grippersabsolutely square with the side edges of the sheet for insuring the accurate slitting. thereof. As the sheet passes around the slittingcylinder it is slit longitudinally of its travel into two sheets and these two sheets-are transferred to the head grippers on the endless delivery carrierby the grippers on the transfer cyl inder. Just as the head grippers release the head of the sheet its rear end is engaged by the rockingulcvers andguiding fingers and. as the forwardv movement of the rocks ing levers is slower than the surface speed of the endless delivery carrier. the speed of the sheet is materially reduced; thus insuring its more accurate dclivery onto the delivery table. The fingers coact with the levers during a substantial part of the forward movement ofthe levers until they separate because of their divergent paths.
l/Vhile I have shown the sheets as slit intopairs, it is'obvious that the sheet may be fed through the mechanism without slit ting and also that the sheets may be slit longitudinally into anynumber ofsmaller sheets, as desired, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
By the term cylinders wherever used, I wish to include any means suitable for carrying the sheets through the prescribed paths, and by the term grippers I wish to include any means suitable for engaging the sheets to lead them through their path of travel.
-By maintaining control of the sheetaf-fl ter it is cutfrom the webuntil it ispositively engaged by the grippers on the slitting cylinder, I am enabled to feed the sheet with its head absolutely square with respect to its side edges,*so as to insure the accurate slitting of the sheet parallel with said side edges. v
Furthermore, by the use of the endless web feeding carrier for feeding the web through the cutters and then transferring the sheet out therefrom to the slitting cy'l inder, the mechanism for handling the web and sheets is materially simplified.
' Novel features of this invention shown and described but not claimed herein, form the subject matter of m" copending annlication, Serial No. 879,323, filed December 28, 1914:, of which this application is a division.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction. and arrangement of the various parts'withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but What I claim is: i I
1. In a machine of the character described, means for'cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier having grippers, and traveling grippers arranged to grasp the web, carry it through the cutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom directly to the grippers on said rotary sheet carrier.
2. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier having grippers and an endless carrier having grippers arranged to grasp the web, carry it through. the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom directly to the grippers on the rotary sheet carrier.
In a machine of the character clescribed, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier havcut therefrom directly to the traveling web,a rotary sheet carrier having grippers and traveling at a higher surface speed than the web and grippers traveling at the speed of the" web for transferring the sheets cut therefrom directly to the grippers on said rotarysheet carrier.
5. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier having grippers and travelin at a higher surface speed than the web, and an endless carrier having grippers traveling at the speed of the web for transferring the sheets grippers on the said rotary sheet carrier.
6. In a machine of the] character de-' scribed, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier having grippers and traveling at a higher surface speed than the web, an endless carrier having side grippers traveling at the speed of the web arranged to engage the sheets cut from the web andtransfer them directly to the grippers on said rotary sheet carrier;
In amachine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, arotary sheet carrier having grippers and traveling at a higher surface speed than the web, and grippers traveling at the speed to grasp the web, carry it through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets out therefrom directly to the grippers on said rotary sheet carrier,

In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier having grippers and traveling at a higher surface speed than the web, an endless carrier having side grippers traveling at the surface speed of the web and arranged to grasp the side edges of the web, carry it through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets out therefrom directly to the grippers on said rotary sheet carrier.
10. In a machine of the character de scribed, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, means for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and meansarranged to engage the Web, carryit through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom directly to said slitting means.
11. In a machine ofthe character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling Web, means for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and an endless carrier arranged to engagethe \veb,-carry it through the sheetcutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom directly to said sheet slitting means.
12. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets. from a traveling Web, means forslitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and an endless carrier havingside grippers arranged to engage the side edges of the Web, carryit through the sheet cutting meansand trans fer the sheets cut therefromdirectly to said sheet slitting means.
13. In a machine of the character described means for cuttingsheets from: a traveling \veb, means-traveling at a higher surface speed than the Web for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and means traveling'at the speed of the Web arranged to engage the Web, carry it through the sheet cutting means andtransfer the sheets cut therefrom to said sheet slitting means.

In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling Web, means traveling at a higher surface speed than the Web for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel. and an endless carrier traveling at the surface speed of the Web arranged to engage the Web, carry it through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom tosaid sheet slitting means.

In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling Web means traveling at a higher surface speed than the Web for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and an endless carrier havingside grippers travelving at the speed of the web, arranged to engage the side edges ofthe Web, carry it through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets cut therefrom-to said sheet slitting means. i

In a machine of 'the character described, means for cuttingsheets from a travcling Web, means traveling at-a higher surface speed than the Web-for slitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and an endless carriertravelingat the speed of the Web for transferringthe sheets cut therefrom to said sheet slitting means.

In a machine of: the character (16? scribed, means forcutting,- sh'eets from a traveling Web, means traveling at a higher surfacespeed than the Web-forslitting the sheets longitudinally of their travel and an endless carrier having side grippers travelingat the speed of theweb: for transferring the sheetscut therefrom to said sheet slitting means.

In a: machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling, Web, rotary sheetslitting means and an endless delivery carrier both travel ing at a higher surface speed than the'web and an endless carrier traveling at the speed of the Web, arranged to carry the Web through the sheet cutting ;means and transfer the sheets cuttherefrom to said sheet slitting means.
19; In a machine of. the character described,means for cutting sheets from a traveling web a sheet: slitting cylinder, a transfer cylinder and an endless delivery carrier all traveling at a higher: surface speed than the Web, and an endless carrier traveling at the speed of the web, arranged to engage the Web, carrv it through the sheet cutting means and transfer the sheets .cut therefrom to said slitting cylinder;
