i SHEET-DELIVERY MECHANISM FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HqwAnn M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of tonington, in the county of New Londonand State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Delivery Mechanism for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
{he object of this invention is to provide novel means for delivering sheets fiat in either one or a plurality of piles, the sheets when delivered in a plurality of piles being arranged side by side. Y My invention includes means for feeding a web at a certain speed and means for'delivefring the sheets cut therefrom, at a higher speed; intermediate variable speed means being employed for taking the advance edge of the Web. at the speed of the web and transferring the sheets cut from the web, at a higher speed, as for instance, the speed of insurlng the opening and closing of the sevthe-sheet delivery device.
My invention also includes means for slit-i.
ting the sheets longitudinally of their travel" after they have been cut from the web, and means for insuring the feeding of the sheets to the slitting mechanism and the takingof the sheets by the slitting mechanism absolutely square with the side" edges of the sheets so that the sheets will accurately I slit;
Figure 1 represents in side elevation..so.-. much of asheet delivery mechanism for printing machines as includes my invention.
. Fig. 2 is a section taken from front to rear just inside of the near side frame, and Fig.3 is a diagrammatic section taken from front to rear centrally through the delivery mechanism.
A. pair of rotary cutters 1, 2 are mounted on suitable shafts 3, 4, and are herein shown as having one set of coacting bl'ades 5, 6, for cutting a sheettran'sver'sely from the web every revolution of the cutters. Guides 7, 8, for,'the web are located below the cutters h The sheet delivery table is denoted by 9.- A sheet delivery device is arranged to de'- posit the sheets on the table9, which delivery device is herein shown as an endless delivery carrier 10 having sets of grippers 11 thereon at suitable intervals. A slitting cylinder 12 Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed December 28, 1914. Serial No. 879,324.
is mounted upon a shaftl3 driven at a continuous speed, which cylinder is herein shown as provided with two sets of grippers14, 15.
provided with a set of grippers 18 arranged to transfer the sheets from the slitting cyl cylinder 12.
The sheets are slit longitudinally oftheir travelon the dylinder 12 into any number of sections by providing a slitting shaft, 23, with oneor more slitting disks 24, coacting with the slitting cylinder 12. I
Suitable cam mechanisms are provided for eral sets of grippers at the proper times for the transfer of the sheets, which cam mechanisms will not be specifically described herein as they may be of well known'or approved construction. 7 The web is fed through the rotary cutters 1, 2, at a certain speed. The slitting cylinder 12 is driven at a higher surface'speed,
in the present instance through a train of gears 25, 26 27, 28, 29. The endless sheet delivery carrier 10 and the transfer cylinder '16 are driven at the same surface speed as the slittingcylinder 12, through a train of gears 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. The cylinder 19 is i driven at a variable surfacespeed ranging from the slower speed of the web to the higher surface speed of the'slitting cylin der 12, through the variable speed gears 34,
35, which gears are so arranged lil -11113 the grippers 21 and 221will'b e traveling at the 3 speed of the web at; the time. for grasping the advance edge of the web and will be traveling at the increased speed of the grippers 14 and 15-'respectively' of the slitting cylinders at the time the sheets cut from the web are transferred thereto.
As the longitudinal cut in the sheet is made after the sheets have been cut from the web, it is essential that the sheets be taken by the slitting cylinder perfectly square with the side edges of the sheets.
This is accomplished by the device hereinabove described, by means of which the advance edge of the slower travelin web is taken at the speed of the web and t 1e sheets cut therefrom are transferred to the slitting mechanism at the speed of the slitting mechanism.
Where I have used the term cylinders, I wish to include any type of carrier for the sheets, and where I have referred to the term grippers, I wish to include any suitable means for engaging the sheets to lead them through the prescribed paths.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the structure herein set forth, but
\Vhat I claim is:
