In flat sheet deliveries for printing presses where the sheets are deposited in a single pile it has been usual to stop thepress at the completion of the pile to permit its removal.
frequently repeated stopping and starting of the press is objectionable, particularly in color presses using ink drying means, as the color register and` the drying of the ink is adversely affected by said repeated stopping and starting of the press.
This repeated stopping and starting of the press is also objectionable where thepress is provided with a flying paster or an automatic paper supply roll Lrreplenish'er.
The object of this invention, generally, is to l5, provide in a single pile delivery means whereby the'sheet pile'may be divided into sections as the pile is being lowered, and the said sections removed without stopping the press, thereby ensuring uniform production and accurate color register as well as materially speedingup the delivery of the product.
The object of this invention, more specifically, is to provide a plurality of insertable plates for dividing the pile into sections as it is being lowered, and a pile lowering device having spaced sets of supports for receiving successive plates.

The pile lowering device in the present instance is shown as comprising two pairs of vertically disposed traveling endless chains 5 (one pair at each side of the sheet pile). Each pair of endless chains 5 passesl around .upper and lower sprockets 6 and I respectively. Each pair of upper sprockets 6 is fast on a shaft 8 which is rotated step by step to lower the pile by providing eachshaft 8 with a worm gear 9 meshing with a worm Iil'on a shaft I I, which shaft has fast thereon a ratchet I2 engaged by a pawl I3 carried by an arm I4 loosely mounted on the shaft II. This arm I is oscillated through a rod I5 from a crank I6 carried by one end of the rotary shaft I'I. Each pair of vertically disposed endless carriers 5 is provided with spaced sets of supports I8 for receiving successive pile section supportingplates 3 a-t an upper point in the downward movement of said supports. These supports project a distance outwardly from the endless carriers so that when they pass around the lower end of the endless carriers their speed will be accelerated, thus causing the lowermost pile section to be moved away from the next succeeding pile section as the lowermost pile section is being dropped onto its removable delivery platform I, thereby giving time enough for the removal of this lower pile section from beneath the downwardly moving next succeeding pile section.
The endless carriers may be guided in their movement by providing `the cross` pins I9 which secure the plate supports I8-to their respective carriers, with studs or rollers 20 traveling in endless grooves 2| in the vertical side frames 22. The front and back sheet stops 23 and 24 are suitably mounted tocoact with the side joggers 25 which 40 may be operated in the usual manner,to properly position the sheets received from the sheet de positing device. This sheet depositing device in the present instance comprises a pair of horizontally disposed traveling endless chains 2B which pass around end sprockets 21 and 28 fast on their respective rotary shafts 29 and 30. These endless chains 26 are provided with spaced sets of coacting sheetgrippers 3| which are operated in the usual manner to take the sheets from the sheet grippers 32 on therotary sheet transfer carrier 33 and to release the sheets when they reach a position over the sheet delivery pile.
Suitable means areA provided for depressing the tail ends' of the sheets after they have been released from their grippers 3| and for retarding the sheets to permit their proper deposit flat on the pile. In the present instance this means comprises a rotary member 34 having rollers 35 which coact with an oscillating finger 36. This member 34 is mounted on a rotary shaft 31 and the oscillating fingers 36 are mounted on a rock shaft 38 which is provided with an arm 38, the movement of which is controlled through a rod 39 and roller 40, which roller travels in the groove of a cam 4| on the rotary cam shaft I1.
Motion is imparted from the gear 42 on the shaft 29 to the shafts I1 and 31 through the gears 43, 44 and 45.
From the above description it will be seen that the sheets are continuously deposited in a pile for delivery therefrom in pile sections. As one pile section onits plate 3 is almost completed the next succeeding plate 3 is partially inserted into the pile while the Vupper sheets are still being acted upon by the joggers and front and back stops. As soon as this plate 3 reaches a point below the joggers and front and back stops the plate may be entirely inserted into the pile onto 4 its set of coacting downwardly moving supports I8. As the sheet pile section nears it delivery point its movement is accelerated because of the greater surface travel of the supports i8 as they pass out from under the opposite edges of the plate to deliver the plate with its pile section onto the truck platform I. This will separate the top of this pile section from the next succeeding inserted plate and its starting pile section, thereby permitting the ready removal of the preceding pile section. There will then be plenty oi time for the insertion of a. new delivery platform on its truck for receiving the delivery of the next succeeding pile section.
By this means the press is not stopped for the delivery of the sheet pile but is kept running at all times to thus ensure not only a more rapid delivery of the sheets but also a more satisfactory product.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but what we claim is:
1. In a sheet delivery for printing presses, means for forwarding the sheets and depositing them in a pile, removable delivery platforms, insertable plates serving of themselves to divide the pile into sections, and means for depositing successive plates, each with its pile section, onto successive delivery platforms for removal thereby, without stopping the press.
2. 6. In a sheet delivery for printing presses, means for forwarding the sheets and depositing them in a pile, removable delivery platforms, insertable plates serving of themselves to divide the pile into sections, vertically disposed endless carriers, and spaced sets of plate supports carried thereby and arranged to receive successive plates at an upper point in their downward movement at one speed and to deliver the plates, each with' its pile section, onto successive delivery platforms at a lower point in the downward movement of the plate supports at an accelerated speed, without stopping the press.
7. In a sheet delivery for printing presses, means for forwarding the sheets and depositing them in a pile, joggers and stops for the sheets, insertable plates serving of themselves to divide the pile into sections, said plates having their front edges shaped to permit the partial insertion of the plates into the portion of the pile being jogged, and a pile lowering device arranged to wholly receive the plates after the sheets have been jogged, said pile lowering device being arranged to deliver the plates with their pile sections.
8. In a sheet delivery for printing presses, meansfor forwarding the sheets and depositing them in a pile, joggers and front stops for the sheets, removable delivery platforms, insertable plates serving of themselves to divide the pile into sections, said plates having their front edges shaped to permit the partial insertion of the plates into the portion of the pile being jogged, and a pile lowering device arranged to wholly receive the plates after the sheets have been jogged, said pile lowering device being also arranged to deliver the plates, each with its pile section, onto. successive removable delivery platforms.
9. In a sheet delivery for printing presses,
