(CI. 93-93) This invention relates to certain improvements in delivery mechanisms for printing machines and more particularly to a mechanism for dividing or arranging the product of such a machine in evenly divided sets to facilitate the counting.

Among the objects of this invention, one is to provide a delivery mechanism which has a means for gripping each product as it is released from the folder of a printing machine and which is adapted to maintain said grip until the product is about to be ejected.
Another object is to provide a means whereby certain gripping members are periodically opened somewhat in advance of their regular order of opening and to provide a means to eject the product from the grippers at these periods. 7
In general, the structure involved in this invention comprises a rotatable cylinder having a plurality of evenly spaced ipper fingers mounted therein, said fingers having a gripper portion projecting beyond the surface of the cylinder and adapted to be moved when in engagement with the product of a printing machine or other similar machine, to grip and advance same to a normal y positioned stop, whereupon the grip is released and the product is ejected. A predetermined number of productsare ejected in this manner and deposited upon a conveyor in evenly spaced relation. After the desired number of products have been deposited in this manner, an auxiliary stop and gripper release mechanism is then actuated which is adapted to release and eject one product somewhat in advance of the normal release and ejecting position, to cause said latter product to project beyond the edge surface of the evenly spaced products when deposited upon the conveyor. In this manner, the products will be divided into sections, with an equal numher of products in each sectionand with one projecting product in each section to mark same.
With the above and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certainnovel parts, arrangements and, combinations which will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed. I

Referring now to the details of construction, a cylinder II .is rotatably mounted in bearings l2 which are supported by side frames l3, only one of which is shown, and is driven in any suitable manner.
Above said cylinder H, a suitable guide mechanism I4 is provided through which the product of a printing press folder is adapted to pass, and which guides said product to align same with a gripping portion of a gripping mechanism to be hereinafter described.
.Below said cylinder II, a suitable conveyor I! is provided, upon which the product is deposited after it is ejected from the gripper mechanism.
Said gripper mechanism comprises a plurality. of fingers l6 having supporting lugs I! seemed thereto and fixed to shafts it, which shafts l8 are suitably mounted in end walls.|9 of said cylinder. The ends 2| of the gripper fingers l6 extend outward through openings 22 in the circumferential wall Ila of the cylinder and are bent inward to provide a gripper portion for same.
Arms 23, fixed to the ends of shafts l8, as shown in Figure 3, have cam rollers 24 mounted on the ends thereof, which rollers ride over the cam surface 25 of a stationary cam 26, bolted to the frame l3.
Fixed stop arms 21, are arranged to project into the path of the moving product when in engagement with the gripper fingers and may be mounted in any convenient manner. As shown in the drawings. each fixed stop comprises a bar mounted in a bracket 28, with said bracket se-.
upper end of said bar is curved and extends into a recess 3| provided in the circumferential wall Ila.
As thus far described the mechanism will function in the-following manner.

Justpriortotheengagementof the product with said stops, the gripping tension of the finger l isreleased, which thus permits in the same manner to pick up and release each product, and since the fingers are equally spaced around the cylinder, the products will be elected therefrom and deposited on the conveyor IS in I substantially equally spaced relation.
The means provided for counting the products comprises a mechanism which is adapted to eject one of every predetermined number of products, somewhat in advance of the normal order of ejection, and thereby cause same to extend out from those products on the conveyor which were ejected in their normal order. For example, let it be considered that every twenty-fifth product is to extend beyond theedge of the evenly spaced run of products deposited on the conveyor. This extended product would then function as a marker or guide'to simplify the counting of the products.
The mechanism involved in the latter operation consists of movable stop members 32, each having an arm 33 secured to a rock shaft 34 and a forwardly disposed extension 35, which is adapted to lie within a groove 3| of the cylinder wall Ila, out of the path of the gripped product, when the products are being run oil. in normal order or evenly spaced relation.
A cam shoe 38 is pivotally mounted at 31 within a cavity 38, in'the' stationary cam 16, and has one cam surface 3!.
A rocker lever ll is secured to the rock shaft 14 and has a roller 42 mounted on one arm thereof. A turnbuckle It has one end connected to another arm of said rocker lever 4| at H and its other end connected to the cam shoe 36 at 45. A rotatable cam I is mounted on a driven shaft 41, which shaft is carried inbearings in the frame l3, and is provided with a cam surface ll upon which the roller 42 rides.
During the normal run of said products, the parts of the mechanism'are positioned as shown in Figure 1, with the movable stop 32 and the cam shoe 38 positioned in an inoperative location. When the raisedportion 49 on the cam 48 engages the roller 42, the shaft ll is rocked, which rocking motion swings the extensionv IS on the movable stop 32, downward into the path of the product, and also causes the cam shoe 3' to be moved downward to present its cam surface to the appreaching cam roller 24. A new cam surface and a new stop at the edge II of the extension 32, is

While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, 'it will be understood-that certain changes and variations may be made in the specific structure provided for carrying out the invention without however departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

3. In a delivery mechanism for a printing .machine, a rotatable cylinder having gripper fingers extending beyond the surface thereof to grip the products of a printing machine and deliver same to a stripper, a cam means to control the grip and release of said gripp rs, a conveyor to receive the product, a stop to strip certain products from the cylinder and position same upon the conveyor in evenly spaced relation when released by the grippers, a second stop, and means for ,opening the grippers prematurely as certain other of said products are stripped by the second stop.
4. In a delivery mechanismf for a printing machine, a rotatable cylinder having gripper fingers extending beyond the surface thereof to grip the products of a printing machine and deliver same to a stripper, a cam means .to'control thegrip and release of said grippers, a conveyor to receive the product, a fixed stop to strip certain products from the cylinder and position same upon the conveyor in evenly spaced relation when released by the grippers, second stop movable into the path of certain p ucts, and means for opening the grippers before the engagement of said latter products with the second stop to thereby deposit said latter products in an offset relationto the first named products. A mechanism for' counting the product of a printing machine folder, including in combination, a plurality of grip fingers arranged in evenly spaced relation, means for successively bringing said fingers into gripping engagement with each product as it is released from the folder, a normal stop adapted to be engaged by a predetermined number of said products, whereby they are elected and become piled in evenly spaced relation, an-auxillary stop, and finger grip release with means for actuating same periodically to eject certain predetermined products out of the normal order, whereby the said latter named products are ofiset from the evenly spaced products.

A mechanism for counting the product of a path of the moving product, a movable cam shoe cooperating with said movable stop, and means for actuating said movable stop and cam shoe at preahead of their normal order of ejection and thereby position same in an offset relation to the equally spaced products.

A mechanism for'counting the product of a magazine press folder, including in combination, a conveyor, a rotatable cylinder, rods equally spaced within said cylinder and gripper fingers secured to said rods, said gripper fingers extending through openings in the wall of said cylinder, rocker arms secured to the ends of said rods, a stationary cam adapted to rock said arms and gripper fingers to cause same to be moved into engagement and disengagement with the surface of said cylinder and thereby grip each product released from the folder, 9. normal stop means adapted to engage said product and a predetermined number of same in succession as they are released from their gripper fingers, a movable stop normally positioned within the wall of the cylinder, a movable cam shoe normally positioned within a cavity in the gripper cam, and-means for actuating said movable stop and cam shoe to open the gripper fingers and eject certain products somewhat in advance of the normal order of ejection, whereby certain products are ejected and deposited in evenly spaced relation upon a conveyor and certain products are ejected ahead of thenormal order to position same in an oflset relation to the evenly spaced products.

In a delivery mechanism for aprinting machine, a cylinder having grippers for handling cut products, means for operating the grippers to release the products, a conveyor to receive the products, means to strip the products when released by the grippers and position same onthe conveyor in a normal order, and means to open said grippers and strip certain-of said products in advance of their normal order, whereby the said certain products will be displaced with reference to the other products on the conveyor.

In a delivery mechanism for a printing machine, the combination of means to receive the products from the printing machine, means to retain the products on the receiving means, s'top means to remove the products from said receiving means at regular-intervals and periodically at other intervals in the machine operation, and

In delivery mechanism for a printing machine, a product retaining device to hold a product upon a product receiving means, a conveyor to which the products are delivered from said receiving means, timed mechanism operative to actuate said device torelease the product held thereby periodically at diflerent'intervals and in either of two diflferent positions, and product removing means operative toremovethe product from said product receiving meansin eitherposi- .tioninwhichitissoreleased'andcanseittobe delivered to' said conveyor in the position it is.
