GEORGE KOLLSTEDE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO V. E.A BLACK COMPANY INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION 0F RHODE ISLAND.
BEAUTY BOX.
Application filed February 12, 1921. Serial No. 444,380.
T 0 all whom t may concewz- Be it known that I, GEORGE KoLLsrEDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Beauty Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to containers for powder or cosmetics adapted for 'beautifying.
The essential objects of my invention are to avoid the use of solder whereby the parts of the structure are liable to discoloration and injury; to lessen the labor and expense of construction and assemblage of parts; and to attain these and other ends in a simple and strong structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consistsiin such parts and insuch combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In fthe accompanying draw-ings which form a\part of this specification -Figure 1 is a perspective v-iew of my novel box in open position,
Figure 2, a rear perspective view of the housing portion removed,
Figure 3, an enlarged perspective view of the hinge,
Figure 4, a bottom plan view of the housing portion, and
F igure, a central transverse section of the box in closed position.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The body 8 of my box is in this instance oval, and comprises a bottom wall 9 and a peripheral side wall or flange 10. The latter is provided in the middle of its front portion withan opening 12, diametrically opposite' to which are hinge sleeves 13 formed on'the edge of the wall. A cover 14 for the box comprises a top wall 15 and a peripheral v side wall or flange 16 provided with a cavity 17 midway the lengthof its front portion. Integral with its rear edge, opposite the cavity, are hinge sleeves 19. A pintle 2O in the sleeves 13 and 19 completes a hinge be tween the body and cover. Resting against the cover top 15 is a mirror 22 engaged .by a frame or retaining plate 23 supported by indents or projections 24 in the flange 16.
A housing member 26 comprises a flat top plate 27 and a peripheral downwardly directed flange or side wall 28 integral therewith. In one piece with the top 27 are pockets or cups 3() comprising bottoms 31 and sides 32. In this instance the pockets are two in number and are arranged one on each side of the center of the top plate in longitudinal alignment with each other. Midway the front of the wall 28 are upper and lower openings 34 and 35, and opposite these the flange has a horizontal depression or socket 37. i
The housing member is cut and drawnup in all its details, by suitable dies, from a single thin sheet of metal, and the wall 28 is somewhat resilient. Neither thepockets nor the flange, therefore, require soldered connection.
lVithin the housing fast to the wall 2S by rivets 39 in one end is a flexible horizontal plate 40 having upon its free end laterally extending upper and lower ears' 41 and 42. The ear 41 passes through the opening 34 at a point abovefthe bodywall 10, and when the cover is closed resting on' wall 10 the ear enters the cavity-17. The ear 42 passes through the openings 35 and 12. Thevibratory plate or finger 40 has contactingV with its vrear face a curved flat spring 44 whose end margins abut against the pockets 30 and thus the spring is held in position by friction without the use/of solder. In unlatch* ing the cover the operator presses inwardly with his thumb or finger the ear 42, and the spring 44 assists the yielding plate 40 to return the latch into original position with the finger 41 in its Seat 17 thus maintaining the cover in closed position.4 Y
The resiliency of the flange 2'8 permits it to yield during the assembling operation to pass the hinge and maintainI the hinge in its seat after assemblage.` Thev engagement of the parts thus interlocked is not Sulliciently great to prevent the disassembla-ge of theparts, if desired, manually..
' In this instance `upon opposite ends of the wall of the body are eyes 46 adapted to receive the ends of' an extension chain.
I claim I 1. In a box of the character set forth, a hollow body, a cover, a hinge connecting the body and cover, and a housing comprising a top` a pocket in the top, and a resilient peripheral flange slidably embraced by the body and provided with a' socket receiving l the hinge.
2. In a -boX of the character set forth, plate fast to the flange, ears on the plate a body including a. peripheral Wall provided registerable in the opening and in the cavity, with an opening, a cover pivotally mounted. and a flat spring resting against the pockets 10 on the Wall provided with a. cavity, a housand the plate. ing comprising a top depending lpockets in In testimony whereof I have affixed my the top, and a depending peripheral Harige signature. detaohably embraced by the Well, a vibratory GERGE KOLLSTEDE.
