f .ins'sn n srULi., on `iiniriver, WYOMING;
Appiicatimr ineal May ,-5, vle20. .serial NQ. aranci TQ aZZ whom tmcy/ concern: i I
Be it known that li lnssn BfSfriiLL, a
citizen ot the United States, residing` lat Halfway, in the county oi Lincoln and State of "Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Imjiirovements in Tools, of which the following` is a specification. i rllhisvinvention has relation to Wire cutterl and more particularly to a wire cutter embodied in the construction of a .combination tool. i 4
Theprimary object of lthe inventionis to provide a wire cutting implement -in ivliichoneot the cutting elements is of a removable or replaceable character to permit the substitution ot a new cutting` edge `for an old and worn edge.
With the above and otherobjects in view,
the invention resides in the details of con-` struction.` combinationand arrangement oi parts as will be hereinafter more fully point; ed. ont and described, reference being` had to the accomllianying drawings, wherein yFigure l is a side elevation oa toolicon strncted in accordance with the invention.
FigureQ is'a top plan. Figure 3ds a sectional view line 3 -3 of Figure l. i i
Thev invention is constructed primarily of an elongated member l ot relatively thick stock and tapering rearwardly from its-most thickened portion 2 to provide a handle 3, while at its foremost end it terminates in claws 4. On one side the thiclrenedportion ot the member projects upwardly above the plane of the handle inarcuate curved formation `to provide an ottsetv portionv he.- tiveen the handle and the claw end le. This taken on the ofi-'set 5 is A`erooved adjacent one 4end to proi videa channel 6 opening inwardly from the handle and communicating witha diagonal slot 'i' openiinr inwardly from the opposite side this recessis provided with a shoulder 9 p and the opposite side with a. 'vertically disposed openinrT l0 which is adapted to receive the supporting` stud ci"I the wire cutting block. y y
The wire cutting; hlocli consists of' a` squared head 11 olf` appropriate thickness and provided with four sharp corners, each f or which constitute a cutting edge'. The
head is provided' with a short ycylii'i'drical stemy or stock l2 `which may `be inserted vin the opening` 10 when the cutting block is disy f posed inposition within the recess 8. `When so disposed, one side ot theblock lies flush against the front wallv or shoulder" 13 vot the recess and it is moreover spacedoppfositely from the shoulder 9, since both the shoulder 9 andthe-block are` each yarranged'on opposite sidesot the slot 7. The space provided between the rear wall 14 of the recess and the adjacent side of the bloclrll constitutes y' the entrance vor passageL l5 by `means] of which the wire may be inserted into theslot 8, the walls of thevpassage'thusgprovided maintaining the wire to becut in astraightened and desired position.l
Arranged longitudinally of `the `main member `l is a lever member 16 which is provided with a handlelf( andan angularlyw disposed jaw 18 which is adapted to iit into the diagonal slot 7 as indicated kby the dotted lines of Figure l, this second vmember being pivoted` as indicated at 19. Thesides i ot the lever 1G intermediate the handle 717 and the `jaw 18 are beveled to provide a .cnt-p p ting' edge which is adapted t0 he` receivedV in the channel (tot themain member, the upstanding side walls 'of the channel `emand, beingprovided each with a V-shaped `slot QOadapted to coact with the V-shaped `sides ol the tool and be twisted aboiit each ot ier upon revolving the tool.` It will thusy i he seen that the pivotedl members cooperate bracing; the cutting` edge on opposite sides 'i i to provide a wire twister and to further enlarge theusefulnessof the tool other addi-k tional. elenients such as a hammer head 22 and thread cutter may be formed on the nain member l.
rThe gist of the invention however resides inthe provision ct wire cutter formed by the jaw 18ct the member 16 and theblock il of the main member Theinember 16 is pivoted so that the jaw 18 moves later-v ally ot one face ,oit the blockand this jaw is provided with a beveled cutting edge 24, i
y so as to have a tendency tol'sliear thegwire when operating` upon it. Each of the tour edges ot the cutting block il` constitutes a' cutting edge so that when one edge has :be-L
comel worn or dulled a new ,edge mayy be In its modified form. the removable block l1 is provided with a beveled edge 25.\vhich is adapted to cooperate with the adiacenti beveled edge 24 of the' jaw 1S in shearing .the Wire inserted kacross the recess 8. Any tendency of the block 2te l revolveabout its stem l2 during thecuttng action of the Wire is jnsevented by reason 'of Athe abutment of the block with the rear shoulderv of the i'iecczlis, which abutment insures the proper alignment of the cuttingV .edge .ofthe block Withth@ jew 1,8- i
using the .device es a wire cutter. the Wire' be illSrted ,through the yrecess freiheit-lier sidel midisv adapted 'to extend between the cutting jaws llend i8 Which may be separated by moving-handle 17 out.-
' -werdlyv about the. pivot 1'9. Upon movingr the handles together, the wire will be caught between lthe beveled faces .et the jew and block respectively, .and will be, she-ered in twoes the cutting edge'of the jevv Apasses beyond the corner o r cutting ledge et .the block Il, the Widenedlend .of the recess permitting one of the severed ends of the Wire t@ be carried forwardly 'by the :1dvencing cutter jaw 1.8. The cutt'mgoper-nA tion' meyjthus be accomplished Without;V an;v undue bending .Ot-the wire while Vit is.
ing opere-ted on byf-the blade le 4nd it` isl elsolte be 'notedthat` the may either increased orfdimin-i'shedf 'te accruevn crema-l1 blocks. Q f.
' From 'the foregoing description it will be Seen that the riventlen thus embodies .a Wire medatc -iroussizies offwire 'by using larg@ cutter having, e removable -jwsvprovided other at theWill of the person using the tool. 1
vIt is 'also to .be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, arrangement and proportionment oit' parts may .be resorted to as fell Within the scope ofthe invention claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters yPri-tent is A Wire cutter including a main member formed from relatively i thick stock md tapering reewardly 'from its thickened portion to providea handle, the foremost end of said mein member projecting upwardly aboveV thefplane of the handle inaicuetc curved formation to provide an ollset portion, said offsetportion being grooved zidjacent one end to provide a channel opening inwiirdly vfrom the handle rand commlliniciting with :i .diagonal slot opening inwardly from the opposite face oi the memberythe lower face of said mein member being Vprovided with e transverse recess forming a Wire receiving groove a'second member p-ivoted to seid mei-n member and provided with a cutting end wedging into said slot. an opening formed in seid main member', `axsquere 'faced cutting member, e stub shaft carried by said square 'hice member, end adapted'to be received Within seid opening, Suid square luce cutting member being remorzibly disposed egeii'ist one wall of the said recess with one of its feces laterelly opposing the adjacent side or.' the cut- .tingY end of the said second member, erich corner of said square member providing a cutting edge, any ,Oneof which may "be brought into co-operzttive relation with the said cuttingV end.
NIn' testimony whereof I vaffix my signav ture in 'presence oit' tivo Witnesses.
