IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-CUTTERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 144,326, dated November 4, 1873 application filed June 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH EVINGER, of Sandford, county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Thread-Outter for Sewing-Machines. The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to sewing-machines and the nature thereof consists in the provision of an attachment to be used for the purpose of cutting the thread, in order to sever the fabric from the machine.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure 1 represents a portion of the bed-plate of a sewing-machine with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 illustrates the manner of using the attachment. Fig. 3 represents the under side of same.
In the said drawing, the knife A is placed upon the under side of the elastic band B, and secured thereto by rivets, which pass through the said band, and are rigidly attached to the thumb-piece O. The said band is provided with metallic hooks a, by means of which it may be secured to thebed-plates of sewing machines of different sizes, in the manner clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
The operation of the attachment is as follows: The operator loosens the thread with the right hand and draws it out with the left. The knife is then raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and the thread drawn across it and severed.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An attachment for sewing-machines, c011- sisting of the elastic strap provided with hooks, knife, and thumb-piece, all combined to open ate together as and for the purposes described.
