OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
REVERSIBLE CUFF FOR SHIRTS.
Application .filed August 22, 1919. Serial No. 319,097.
To all whom it may concern: 7 1
Be it known. that I, REGINA PARENT GRIFFIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Cuffs for Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be i a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperta-ins tomake and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient reversible shirt cuff; and to such ends, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Particularly, this invention relates to soft cuffs that are adapted to be folded to form what is usually designated as a French cuff. For carrying out my invention, I preferably providethe shirt sleeves with main cuffs made substantially like the ordinary French cuff, but in addition thereto, I provide a supplemental cuff which is attached to the main cuff at its ends, but is loose at both edges, so that the two-flap cuff thus formed may be turned inside out. Button holes are provided, both in the main. and
supplemental cuffs, both above and below the peripheral folding line. With this arrangement, the cuff structure can be turned either side out, that is, so that the supplemental cuff will come, either on the inside or on the outside of the main cuff, and in either of such adjustments, the cuff can then be folded outward on its folding line toafford the French cuff formation. These two adjustments bring different surfaces of the main and supplemental cuffs to exposed positions, and in both adjustments, the folds of the cuff will be turned outward, so as to give the proper appearance to the cuff.
The improved cuff is illustrated inv the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings Fig. l is a perspective view showing the cuff before it is folded to form the French cuff, but with the supplemental cuff on the outer side of the main cuff;
Fig. 2is an enlarged section in perspective taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. -l;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the cuff first adjusted, as shown in Fig. 1 and then folded on the folding line y to form the French cuff;
Fig. 4 is a section in line 14 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cuff showing the same immediately after it has been turned inside out, in respect to Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a view corresponding to Fig. 5 but showing the supplemental cuff pressed back within the main cuff;
Fig. 7 is a view corresponding to Fig. 3 but showing the cuff folded on the line yg to form the French cuff after the supplemental cuff has been turned within the main cuff, as shown in Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is a section in perspective taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
The shirt sleeve is indicated by the nuperspective on the moral 9 and the main cuff, which at its lower or inner edge is stitched thereto in the customary way, is indicated by the numeral 10. This main cuff and the supplemental cuff are preferably, and, as shown, each formed two ply with their edges finished by what is known as French seams. The supplemental cuff 11, at its ends, is stitched to the ends of the main cuff, as indicated at 12, but both longitudinal edges of the said supplemental cufi are loose, and these loose longitudinal edges being stitched, preferably, by French seams. Both the main and supplemental cuffs are preferably of the same width. The main cuff, inward of the folding line 3 has the customary button holes 13 and outward of the said folding line has the customary button holes 14-. The supple mental cuff 11, in line with button holes 13, is provided with button holes 15, and in line with button holes 14, is provided with button holes 16. This arrangement of the button holes of the main and supplemental cuffs is such that, in the diflerent adjustments of the cuff shownin Figs. 3 and 7, all of the button holes 13, 14:, 15 and 16, will be brought into proper alignment for the insertion of the cuff buttons.
When the cuff is turned, as shown in Fig. 1, the supplemental cuff will be at the outer side of the cuff, thereby exposing the sur face A of said supplemental cuff at the outer side of the cuff and surface B of the main cuff at the inner side of the cuff., When this outer side of the cuff, but when the cuff is then folded, as shown in Fig. 7, surface A of the su i pleinental cuff will, be exposed, both at the inner and outerportions of the cuff.
Obviously, these two arrangements expose different surfaces of the composite cuff so that when surface B of, main cuff is soiled,
, clean surface A of supplementalcuff may be then turned outward and exposed. Of course, the reverse of the above statement is also true.
This cuff is especially designed for use as a French cuff, but if a simpler form of cuff:
is desired,the main and supplemental cuffs might be made narrower and wouldnot, neech to be folded, but will, nevertheless, be turned inside out, or reversed, to give the several clean surfaces,
The cuff above described, is not only simple andeasy tomake, but its edges may beproperly finished and the cuff is easily rebe exposed, both atthe outer and versible. Moreover, in all of the adjustments, properly finishedsurfacesware always providedfat the outer side-ofithe cuff,sothat in no case, does the cuff have the appearance of having-been turned inside out.
hat claim is:
1. A shirt sleeve having a main cuff at tached thereto-at one longitudinal edge, and a supplemental cuff attached to the end edges of: said main, cuff at its end edges but free at both longitudinal edges, said main and supplementah cuffsbeing of approximately the same width.
23A, shirt sleeve. having a main cuff attached thereto atone longitudinal edge, a supplemental cuff attached to the end edges of said main cuff at its end edges; but free atbotlr longitudinal e'dgeswhereby the coinpletecuff maybe turnedieither side out, the saidimain andi supplemental cuffs. having a central-1 folding line and having alignable button holes .on opposite sides; of: such fold ing line, thereby affording a reversible Frenclrcuff;
In testimony whereof I my'signature in. presence, of two witnesses:
REGINA PARENT GRIFFIN. Witnesses:
