CHARLES O. BRAUN, OF BRILLION, WISCONSIN.
EXTENSION TKBLE TOP.
Application led January 24, 1922.
To all 207mm it may concern.'
Be it knownl that l, @Hannes O. Beaute a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brillion, in the county of Calumet and State of ldisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Table rllops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to devices for normally concealing an extension beneath the top of a table, desk, bench cover, or the like, elevating it flush with the top and lo(l ring it in that position. llt is of especial use in built in cabinets,
The invention comprises a frame placed below .-a table top, guides thereon, a front piece secured to the guides and manually ei;- tensible,'an extension top capable of being manually gripped when said front piece is at its extreme outward position and elevated, a raising piece pivoted to the eX- treme inner' end of the extension top and adapted to hold the same flush with the table top, and means for locking the eXtension table top in elevated position.
Primary objects of the invention are the provision of a top which may be normally positioned immediately below the table top, or in a built-in cabinet, and means whereby the extension top may be elevated flush with said table top.
Another important object is the provision of a lock whereby the extension top is maintained in its proper elevated position.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which l Figure 1 and Figure 2 are transverse cross sections of a modification of the device, Figure 1 showing the parts in collapsed position and Figure 2 showing the extension table top in raised position.
Figures 3 and t are cross sections on the lines 3-3 and 4 4 of Figure2.
Figures 5 and 6 are transverse cross sections of a second modification, and
Figures 7 and 8 are transverse cross sections of a third modification, Figures 5 and 7 showing parts in collapsed position, Figures 6 and 8 showing parts in elevated position. Figure 9 is a cross section on the line 9 9 of Figure 6.
Table top 10 is rigid with sides 11 and back 12. Side frame members 13 are se- Seiial No. 531,341.
cured to sides 11 and front and rear frame members 1e and suitably secured to side frame members 13. Longitudinal guide strips 15 are secured to front and rear niembers 14; by bolts 16 which may readily be removed for cleaning and repairing the parts of the device. Guide strips 15 are L-shaped and shorter arms 17 are inwardly directed. l.shapedslides 18 contact along their longer arm with guide strips 15 and their' shorter arm extends upwardly at the rear, contacting with the table top 10.
Blocks 19 Aare secured to slides 18 by a rod 20 threaded at 21 and provided with nuts 22 and 23, which may be loosened to permit the removal of rod 2O and the separation of blocks 19. Blocks 19 are provided with projections 24 adapted to contact with side frame members 13 and with guides 15. Slides 18 are provided with grooves 25, keyhole in shape and are secured together at their front ends by front piece 26. Extension top 27 is mortised in side pieces 28, cut away at 29 to facilitate the raising and lowering of extension top 27 and a raising piece 30 is secured thereto by hinge 31. Side pieces 28 are provided with an extension 32 adapted to contact with front piece 26 when the parts are in the Aposition shown in Figure 2. Brace 33 is secured by screw 32 to extension top 27 and isadapted to prevent warping of extension 27 and to contact with front picco 26, as shown in Figure 2. Raising piece il() has cylindrical pivots 35 extending laterally therefrom and received in slots 25.
It will be noted that bloc-.ks 19 are effective substantially to increase the contact surface of the short arm of slides 18 with table top 10, the desirability of this feature being apparent from Figure 2 wherein it will be noted that vweight downwardly directed on extension top 27 is counteracted by blocks 19 and the shorter arm of slides 18 abutting against table top 10. Blocks 19 serve, also, to prevent the entire withdrawal of slides 18 as they abut against short arm 17 of guide strips 15.
In the operation of the device, when it is desired to extend the table, front piece 26 is moved forward manually, slides 18 being maintained in position by guide strips 15. Vhen the extreme forward position is reached extension top 27 is moved upwardly at its front edge by the hand and then outwardly. As it moves outwardly, pivots 35 slide from the position shown in Figure 1 to the enlarged part of slot 25. Raising piece 3() then rotates on pivots 35, lifting the adjacent end of extension top 27. Brace 33 and shoulder 32 t-hen abut against front piece 26 and the extension top 27 is incapable of further outward movement. Front piece 26 may then be moved inwardly causing extension top 27 to contact with table top l() in a position shown in Figure 2.
lllhen it is desired to remove the extension top, i'ront piece 23 is moved outwardly and pressure is applied to the front edge of e2;- tension top 27. rlhis causes raising piece 30 to rotate downwardly about pivots the enlarged part oi the slot serving to prevent the movinginwardly oiz pivots 35. TWhen extension top 27 is lowered to a horizontal position, front piece 26 is moved inwardly to normal position.
In the modification shownin Figure 5, sli'des 18 have metallic clamps 40 secured thereto by nuts 22 on rods 204 and arms 41 of the clamps extending under guides 15 to prevent upward movement of slides 18. On rotation7 nut 22 moves inwardly releasing clamp 4;() and permitting disengagement of arm 4:1. The whole extension may then be removed for repairing and cleaning. Guides 15 are secured to sides 1l by screws 42. A iront support 4:3 is provided having blocks 44; secured thereto 'for reventing lateral movement of slides 18. @lamps l0 limit the outward movement of slides 18 by contact with iront support 43 and prevent lateral movement of slides 18. Extension 27 is operated in the modiiication shown in Figures 5 and 6 in substantially the same manner as the lfirst described modification. In the modification shown in Figures 7A and 8, slides 50 are provided with two grooves 51 and extension top 52 is secured by means of hinges 53 to raising pieces 54, front piece 55 being suitably secured to the front piece of extension top 52. Slides 50 are secured at their front ends to spacer 56. In this modiication, clamps 40, front support 43, blocks 44:, and guides 18 serve the same purposes as in the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6. y
In the operation of this form, front piece 55 is manually moved forwardly and raising pieces 54 slide in grooves 51 to extreme forward position where they rotate, lifting lextension top 52 level with table top 10.
Spacer piece 56 is then moved inwardly causing extension top 52 to contact with table top 10, as shown in Figure 8.
"When it is desired to remove the top, spacer 56 is moved forwardly, front piece 55 is pushed inwardly. and the parts assume the position shown in .Figure 7.
Obviously the invention is capable of various embodiments and I do not limit myself to the details illustrated, but contemplate a substantial range ot equivalents within the Scope of the appended claims.
1. The combination of a table top, an eX- tension top, ya pair of guides having a slot keyhole in shape on its inner side, collapsible means hinged to said extension top adapted to slide in said slots for holding one end of said extension top in elevated posit-ion, a front piece secured to said slides1 and means rigid with said extension top Vfor contacting with said front pieceand maintaining said extension top in `elevated position.
2. The combination of a table top, a frame spaced therebelow, table sides supporting said top and said frame, a pair ot guide strips secured tosaid frame, each having a face extending parallel to said sides, a pair of L-shaped slides each received between one of Asaid faces and one of said sides and having its longer arm contacting with one of said faces and its shorter arm extending upwardly and contacting with said table top, a pair of blocks each extendingfrom said table top to said i'rame and contacting with the inner face of the shorter arm of one of said slides, means for securing said blocks and said slides together and spacing said blocks apart, means for limiting the movement of said blocks along said guide strips. an extension top, means for pivotally securing said extension top to said slides so as to permit elevation thereof, and' means for ylocking said extension top in elevated position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Brillion. in the county of Calumet and State of Wisconsin.
Jos. W. BINSFELD, ARTHUR C. SoHRoEDnR.
