"UNITED STATES SIMON JONES, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
COMBINATION TABLE AND STEPLADDER. 7
Application filed January 12, 1926. Serial No. 80,818.
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in a combination table and step ladder, and is designed to produce an article of furniture in which a step ladder is t mounted in the frame of a table in such a way that it may be swung outward to serve as a ladder and swung inward to be contained within the frame of the table. The particularly novel feature of my invention is the connecting means which I provide by which the step ladder is attached to the frame of thetable. This means comprises swingable arms pivoted to the table frame and carrying the step ladder, and links carrying a rod adapted to support the upper end of the step ladder on the table frame when in use. 7
In the drawings filed herewith I have illustrated one specific embodiment of my 2 invention but it is to be distinctly understood that I do not consider my invention limited to the said specific embodiment but refer for its scope to the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device showing the step ladder in position for use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 4. I
30 F lg. 3 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 2 showing the step ladder withdrawn into the frame of the table.
Fig. i is a front elevation of my device, the parts being in the same position as shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a table having the top 2, front legs 3 and rear legs 4 with braces 5 and 6 connecting them, and a brace 7 connecting the two front legs 8 and a brace 8 between the two rear legs 4. The step ladder portion of my device consists of the side pieces 9 and the treads 10, the top tread 10 being attached to the pieces 9 by angle irons 11 having downwardly turned tongues 12 at their rear ends. Pivotally mounted upon the rear legs 4 adjacent the brace 8 is a frame comprising the arms 13 and braces 14. It is to be noted that the arms 13 have at their upper ends curved portions 15. These curved portions 15 of the arms 13 are pivoted to the side pieces 9 by pins 16. Pivotally mounted in the angle irons 11 are the links 17 connected at their ends by the rod 18 having collars l9 thereon to prevent lateral movement of the rod 18 relative to the links 17. The parts are so proportioned and disposed that the links 17 extend 'rearwardly, under the tongues 12 between the front legs 3, and the rod 18 has its ends extending over the braces 5. I provide wear plates 20 at the corners formed by the upper edges of the braces 5 and the rear edges of t e legs 3, against which the ends of the rod 18 rest. I also provide stops 21 in. the braces 6 and a bevelled lip 22 on the brace 7.
From the foregoing description of the details of construction of my device, its use and operation will be obvious. The normal position of the parts is illustrated in Fig. 3.
lVhen itis desired to adjust theparts so that the device may serve as a step ladder, the side pieces 9 may be slightly raised from their position of rest on the lip 22 of the brace 7 permitting the step ladder portion of the device to swing on the pins 16, so that the'lower ends of the'side pieces 9 clear the brace 7 The pivoted arms 13 allow the step ladder to swing outwardly and downwardly until it assumes the position indicated in Fig. 1, the rod 18 coming to rest upon the angle plates 20, the links 17 hearing against the tongues 12, thus affording a rigid support for the upper end of the step ladder. It is to be particularly noted that the angle irons 11 afiord a rigid and durable connection between the side pieces 9 and the top tread 10, thus providing a sturdy con struction for the upper end of the step ladder. It is also to be noted that the relation of the links 17, rod 18 and its collars 19 serves to effectively brace the step ladder against lateral strains and prevents wobbling when the device is in'use, thus obviating a common fault of devices of this character.
Having described my invention, what I' claim is:
1. In an article of furniture, the combination of a table provided with a pair of angle irons; a rod adapted to rest in the angles of said angle irons; a pair of links mounted on said rod; and a step ladder to which said links are pivotally attached.
2. In an article of furniture, the combination of a table provided with a pair of horizontal braces; a rod adapted to rest upon said braces; links mounted upon said rod; and a step ladder provided with angle irons pivotally attached to said links and provided 10 with tongues adapted to bear against said links.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
SIMON JONES.
