EDWARD L. ODONNELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
MUSIC-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 2G, 1921,
Appncatin ined April 1s, 1921. serial No. 462,232.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. ODoN- NELL,'a citizen of the United States, residing at theV city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Music- Case, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music cases.
An object of the invention is to provide a music case adapted to be adjusted for use as a music stand for supporting the music sheets at a selected-position fromwhich the music may be read by the player, and improved means forholding the device in rigid position and adjustment.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention when in use as a music stand.
F ig. 2 is a side elevation.
As shown the devices constituting the music stand are inconnection with a case. The stand devices are foldable into the case and are extendible relative to the case to form an elongated stand. When the stand devices are folded in the case they do not occupy all of the room in the case but leave sufficient room for the sheets of music to be received in the case.
In the embodiment shown the case is composed of a sidewall 1, end walls f2 and a bottom wall 3 in permanent rigid connection; a top wall 4 connected with the case by hinges 5 provided with a handle 6 whereby the case may be conveniently carried; and a removable side wall 7 matching the side wall 1 and adapted to close one side of the case whenproperly applied thereto. The removable side wall 7 has a strip 8 adapted to extend across a part lof the top of the case.
` The strip 8 is provided with locks or latches 9 for engagement with coperating parts 10 on the hinged top of the case.
he part 11 to which the top wall 4 is hinged extends beyond the outer surface of the side wall 1 of the case, as do also the end walls 2 and the' bottom wall 3. walls thus extended beyond the outer face of the side wall 1 form a compartment.v The supporting legs 12 of the music stand are hinged to the end walls 2 of the case within the compartment at the outerside of the side wall 1. The supporting legs thus arranged are foldable into said compartment and when so folded within the compartment may be The covered or protected by a wall composed of the members 13 having their outer edges pivotally united with the end walls 2 of the case and being foldable inwardly to form a continuous inclosing wall. '7W hen the legs 12 are extended-the cross members 14 on the legs engage spring catches 15 on the wall inembers 13 and thus obtain proper strength and rigidity.
The supporting frame of the music stand above the case comprises a pair,` of extendj ible supports 16 each composed of a number of pairs of crossed levers pivoted midway of their length and connected at the ends, forming a species of lazy-tong construction. The lower ends of the supports are pivotally united in the case in a novel and efficient manner. As shown, a bracket 17 is attached to each end wall 2 of the case ynear the sidewall 1. An elongated slot 18 extends from the upper or forward end of each bracket 17 to a point near its rear or inner end. The lower end of one of the levers ofeach of the supports 16 is pivoted to the inner or rear end of a bracket 17. A bolt 19 on the forward end of yone of the levers of each of said supports Vpasses through a slot 18 and is provided with aclamp nut 20. f The bolts 19 are slidable within the slots 18 to permit the supports 16 to be extended or folded. Then the supports are extended the ynuts 20 may be clamped,
thereby rrfirmly and strongly holding the supports in extended positions.
My invention comprises a tray 21. A bracket 22 is attached to each end wall of the tray.. Eachof the brackets 22 is provided with an elongated slot 23, similar to the slots 18 in the brackets 17. The pivoted ends of two of the levers of each of the supports 16 are pivotally connected to one of the brackets 22 by a connection 24, while bolts 25'forming the pivots uniting the ends of the matching levers, extend through the slots 23 and are'united with clamp nuts 26 by which the parts may be rigidly clamped together.
It is apparent that when thenuts 20 and 26 are loose the supports may be extended or 'folded at will. When the proper adjustment of the supports is obtained the nuts 20 and 26 may be tightened to hold the supportsrigidly in their extended positions. When itis desired to fold the supports into the casev it is only necessary to loosen the nuts, after which the folding may be easily effected, since the bolts 19 slide easily within the slots 18 and the bolts 25 slide easily Within the slots 23. The tray 2l ii'ts within when they are not in use, therebyservingV toV support the music leaves conveniently accessible tothe user. Y
The ,side wall 7 as previously stated, is removable from the case.` When applied to the ease it may be interlocked lwith ythe Wall l and may be also interlocked with the wall 3 by usual and` well known devices 27 provided for that purpose. The side wall 7 is formed with anumber of holes 28 near each end adapted to receive projections 29 in connection with4 two of the'upper levers of the supports 1G, as shown. ln this way the side wall 7 may be supported in an inclined or oblique position to support the sheets of music in use.Y The strip V 8y forms a support for the bottom edges ofthe sheets of music placed thereon.
From the foregoingI it will be seen that I have produced a music case that is readilyv operable into a music stand or support for the music'V leaves. The device is'of vsimplified construction Yand possesses the proper strength and rigidity. Y i Y lhat claim andldesire to secure by Letters Patent7 is :-f e j y In a device of the character described, a support, a pair of lazy tongs constituting LeXtendible supports pivotally A' connected with the first-named support, Vmeans ttor holdingl the extendible supports in extended position, a hook in connection.v with the upper end of each of saidY supports, and a music rest having a series of holes near each end thereotfor receiving said'hookswhereby the music rest may be supported in different selectedpositions at the upper ends of said supports. -Y y Y v y l EDWARD L.O?DON'N ELL.
