RUSSELL It; WADE, or.-
VENICE, CALIFORNIA."
' rdMAmai A e DE K-1 T a ea e iu d was 3 To all whom it may 'concc mq' Be it known that I, RUssELnRi-Wrinn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Venice, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Reading Desks, of which the following .is a specification.
My invention relates to portable reading desks adapted to serve. as a valise for the carryingof literature and other articles and also as a stand or rack upon which a plurality of books or pamphlets may be supported in an open condition, in order that a person in the pursuance of study or other investigation, may conveniently and readily refer from one book to another; and is particula-rly adapted for the use of Christian Science students where frequent reference from the quarterly pamphlet of Bible lessons, containing sermons and citations, to the Holy Bible and the Science and Health It is the primary object of my invention to provide a simple, convenient and durable portable desk or stand for the above described purpose', having book rests thereon arranged so that the three publications may be disposed in a manner most convenient to the student.
Another object of my invention is to provide a desk which may be used as a receptacle for the convenient carrying of. the various publications desired, said desk being provided with a suitable carrying handle which maybe so adjusted as to form a convenient support for one of the publications, and also may be adjusted out of sight when the desk is laid aside and not in use.
The above and other objects of my invention will be more fully set forth in the following specification, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, is whic Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a desk embodying my invention, showing the desk handle in adjusted position to serve as a support for one of the publications. I
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the same. I
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the top portionof the desk showing the handle as it would appear when the desk is being transported from one place to another.
Fi 4 is a similar view to that of Fig. 3 showing the handle out of utility.
5isa' fragmentalsection taken onitlie ]ine 5 5 of' Fig, 3.
I 'f r i vmy the end walls 10, the top 11, the bottom 12,
I invention, thej'clesk comprises an enclosed receptacle formed of front, wall comprising the stationary member 15 andv the door 16 hinged thereto at its top edge'by means of the hinges 17. The
, top His narrower than the botom 12 thus disposing the. front wall 14 at an 'angle' which inclines rearwardly and upwardly, in
order that the publications may besupport- I 7 ed. thereon at a convenient reading an le The lower edgeof the door 16 is provi ed with an outwardly projecting ledge 18 upon which thelower edges of the books rest and in order that they may be placed properly and prevented from shifting sideways, the notches 19are provided in the upper surface "of the ledge for the reception of the book back.
The combined foldable book rest and carrying handle 20, comprises a pair of oppositely disposed side bars 21, between the outwardly projectingends of which the cross bar handle 22 is secured. The free ends-0f the side bars 21'project through slots 22',
formed in the top 11, and are provided with hinge rod 24wvl1ich is secured to the under surfaceof the top 11 by means of screwsor nails, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of'the drawings. Y y I By the above described construction it will be obvious that when it is desired to utilize the member 20 as a book rest, (as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings), the side bars 21 are moved downwardly until the upper endedges ofthe slots 23 engage with the hinge rod 24, and are. inclined rearwardly until the front edges of said side bars'engage with the front edges 25 of the slots 22.
Thus the member'20 will be held in position to act as a book rest; and in order-that elongated slots 23 for the reception of a 3.
Fig. 3 of the drawings, and when not in.
use it is folded downwardly with the side bars 21 disposed in the-slots 22 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
By the above recited construction of reading desk, it will be apparent that a person pursuing the study of the Christian Science religion may place the quarterly pamphlet in position on the rest 20, as shown in dotted lines at 27, the Bible in the position shown in dotted lines at 28, and the Science and Health pamphlet in the position shown at 29, and thus refer from one to the other of these publications in a very convenient manner.
What I claim is:
A portable reading desk comprising a receptacle having one of its sides arranged on an incline and having formed on its top I a pair of transversely disposed slots, a combined book rest and handle provided with side bars projecting in the slots'of the desk top and having slots formed in their inwardly projecting ends, and a hinge rod passing through the slots in the side bars of the combined book rest and handle secured to said desk.
