BOOK END.
Application filed January 4, 1921.
To all -w ham it may concern Be it known that I, MARGERY lVHEELooK DIXON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Book Ends, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices commonly known as book-ends utilized for supporting a row of books when placed in vertical ar rangement side by side in a horizontal row on a top of a shelf, table, or support.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an ornamental book-end or booksupporting device having an upstanding abutment portion and a horizontal leaf secured to the bottom thereof and upon which loose leaf books are adapted to be arranged in a position side by side in the formation of a horizontal row; the abutment being constructed and arranged of relatively coordinate elements which not only form an ornamental structure in the ordinary purpose of supporting books but one of which elements is also readily dismountable from the abutment so that it may be utilized as an implement for given and other purposes.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a book-end having associated elements constructed and arranged to form a chamber when certain of the elements are in closed juxtaposition. It is also an object to provide a book-end having relatively movable elements which when in closed position form a chamber and one of which when it is in the open position may be utilized. as a receptacle or tray.
Again it is an object of the invention to provide a book-end having a plurality of relatively movable abutment forming elements and a detachable element forming a key and locking device to secure the abutment element in closed position, and which locking device or key is also serviceable, when dismounted, as an implement having other and given purposes.
The invention possesses other advanta-.
geous features, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the following description, where I shall outline in full, that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In' said drawings, I have shown one form of the device of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 434,925.
not limit myself to such form, since the invention as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of other forms.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of an embodiment of the invention in a book-end the upright abutment forming portion of which is shown as provided with a keeper portion to receive and retain a key which is shown in the dismounted positionwithdrawn from the keeper.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation and artial section of a form of the invention incorporating an abutment having relatively separable wall elements shown in the closed position in full line and one of the elements being indicated in the open position in dotted line.
Book-ends or supporting devices of the kind here contemplated are in the form of upright, stable abutments adapted to be placed against the end books of a row in which the books are placed side by side in vertical position upon a table, shelf or other convenient support.
The forms of bookends here illustrated each comprises an upwardly extending main abutment portion 2 one side of which forms a rest with all of the body structure in a common plane to receive the rear cover of a book as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, at B. Preferably the bottom of the abutment 2 is provided with a horizontally projecting platen or leaf 3 upon which may be disposed in vertical position a few of the books forming a part of the row and serves to add the necessary weight and stability to maintain the book-end against slipping away from the row.
In the form of device shown in Fig. l the abutment is constructed in the form of a grille work, of any suitable design. This grille work is provided with keeper construction including elements of the grille work provided with apertures or receivers, as at 4;4, to receive the tongue or shank of a removable element of the grille work which is shown removed from the keepers in Fig. 1, at 5. This tongue or shank 5 may be provided at its upper end with any suitable ornamentation as 6, and the removed ornamental elements including the parts 5 and 6 may be utilized as an implement for any given or suitable purposes when it is removed from its keepers in the abutment structure 2. For instance, the removable shank or tongue 5 may be provided with ed es suiliciently sharp to enable the remova le element to serve as a paper cutter when detaclged from the device, and yet when it is restored to its position upon the abutment 2, it immediately becomes an ornamental element of the construction.
In the modification shown in Fi 2 the book-end is provided with relatively mov-- able sections comprising the abutment structure. The fixed abutment section 2 is provided with keepers & to receive the shank 5 of the removable element. The platen or leaf 3 may be projected beyond the outer end of the abutment section 2 and provided with a hinge 10 on which is mounted the outer and movable section 11 which preferably is made ofhollow form so that when it is moved to the upper closed positionas shown in Fig. 2 it forms a chamber in which there may be concealed various objects as may be desired. When the abutment section 11 is thrown to the outward position shown in dotted line, the concealed objects may be removed or if preferred the section may be provided with yielding clamps or receivers 12 to hold-the enclosed objects, such, for instance, as cigars, or cigarette boxes and means may be provided for retaining boxes of matches. A novel feature of this construction is that when the movable section 11 is in its upright and closed position a perforated lug 13 thereof passes beneath one of the keepers at of the abutment section 2 so that the shank 5 of the removable ornamental element may be utilized when passing through the lugs 18 to lock the same in closed position.
What is claimed is:
1. A book-end having an abutment provided with a keeper portion, a wall movably connected to one side of the abutment portion and forming therewith a receptacle, and an element, removably retainable in the keeper portion, for securing the wall part in closed position, said element forming a part of the ornamentation and serviceable as an implement when dismounted.
2. As an article of manufacture, a bookend having a platen or leaf provided with an upwardly extending abutment to support the contiguous cover-back of a book and having a socket and an implement removably retainedin the said socket, the said implement having a shank portion. and a handle portion both exposed when inserted in the socket and forming a. portion of the ornamental design of the book-end. V 7
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
