IMPROVEMENT IN stove-neces.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 144,230, dated November 4, 1873; application filed July 14, 1873.
l To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABsALoM S. SHoNTZ, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Iniproveinent in Stove and Furnace Doors; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or front view of my inven` tion, showing both parts of the dooi closed. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the lower part ofthe door closed, and the upper part open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line. x x in Fig. 1.
Like letters indicate like parts in each Ii gure.
rIhe invention relates to a stove-door in two parts, the upper of which is pivoted to swing vertically, and provided on the inner side of its lower edge with a flange or rahbct, which ts into a recess in the inner side of the upper edge of the lower part, which :is hinged to swing laterally, all so arranged that either part may be opened or closed without affecting the other, and that the joint between the parts shall be tightly closed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the lower section of a door, secured to the stove or iire front B by means of the hin ges a, and this door, in being opened, swings in the ordinary way. G is the upper section of this door, pivoted to the frame B in such a manner that it will swing upward.` The lower edge of this upper section is provided with an offset, l), which, when this section is closed, shuts in behind the upper edge of the lower section.
Doors constructed in this way allow a larger opening for the admission of fuel, and, the upper section being closed, ordinarily prevents the escape of smoke or gases.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The door G, pivoted to swing vertically, and provided withl ralohet B, in combination with the door A, hinged to swing laterally, and provided on its upper edge with a recess to re ceive the rabbet l), substantially as shown and for the uses speciiied.
A.. S. SHONTZ.
Titnesses JOHN HUTTON, JEssE LANDR-UM.
