Description

H. C. LEES.
Tassel Tops Patentedct". 28,1873.
#2656615, www M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc HENRY o. LEES, or cAMnEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOE To ELIZABETH E.
- LEES, oE SAME PLACE.
:MPR'ovEMEN'r IN usen-Tops.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,115, dated October 28, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. LEES, of Camden, Camden county, State of NeWJersey, have invented an Improved Tassel-Top, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to enable the class of tassehtops which are composed of a number of separate blocks of wood covered by braiding to be more rapidly and economically manufactured than heretofore; and I attain this object by inclosing the whole number of blocks A B C, 85e., in a continuous braided cover, F, instead of inclosing them in separate covers, as usual, all as plainly shown in the accompanying drawing, the iigure in which represents an enlarged view, partially in section, of the improved tassel-top, the blocks being separated from each other in order to illustrate the invention more clearly.
In the ordinary process of manufacture it has been usual to inclose the blocks of which a tassel-top is composed within separate covers of braided silk or worsted, and to afterward string the covered blocks together in the required order upon a tubular Stem, H, through which a cord is passed to bind the whole together. In the manufacture of my improved taSsel-top I first string the blocks upon the tubular stem, in order to retain them in their proper relative positions, and then, by means' of an ordinary circular braiding-ma chine, inclose the whole number of blocks within a continuous braided cover, F, a considerable economy in the quantity of covering material required being thus effected, the operation being performed much more rapidly, and the product being more uniform through out, than when the blocks are covered separately and afterward bound together.
It will be understood that the blocks are to be brought closely together after being covered, they being separated in the drawing, as before remarked, in order to more clearly illustrate the invention.
I claim- A tassel-top composed of a number of separate blocks, A B C, &c., inclosed in a continuous braided cover, F, substantially as herein described. l
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
HENRY C. LEES.
