PLUME.
' jSIEOIFICATION To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RA PH W. E. ALDRICH, of Northampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plumes, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in plumes, and has for its object to provide a means whereby an ornamental and elfective plume may be produced in an economical, simple, and expeditious manner.
The invention consists in the production of an improved article of manufacture, and in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete plume. Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating one means of constructing the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on a central line of Fig. 1.
It is the prime object of the invention to provide a plume which shall consist of a rigid central support or core and an ornamental Sotswold wool, Angora hair, and other equivalent natural products, which have been detached from the hide, skin, or surface upon which they are grown.
To this end the central support or core, A, is formed of two or more lengths of wire twisted uponthemselves to produce a single strong and rigid strand, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The wool, hair, or other natural product, B, selected for the body of the plume, is separated from the skin or hide, cleaned, and, if desired, dyed, or otherwise colored.
Several means may be employed for uniting forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,877, dated December 4, 1888. Application filed July 10, 1883 Serial No.279,492. (No specimens.)
the wool or hair to the support, the preferred means being, however, partially illustrated in Fig. 2, from which it will be observed that the lengths of wire are stretched parallelone above the otheran d the strands of wool or hair are laid between them in such manner as to extend a suitable distance outward therefrom. The wire is now twisted by suitable machinery, whereby the strands of wool' or hair are effectually tied in the core or support A as the latter is formed. \Vhen the operation is completed, the strands fall in vertically and gracefully downward around the core. By proper manipulation of the wool or hair strands any desired contour may be imparted to the finished plume.
The upper end of the core or support A is provided with an attached cap, I), which may be either plain or ornamental.
Instead of wire, stiffened hide, gut, or similar material may be used to form the core B.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved plume consisting of acentral rigid core, strands of wool, hair, or similar material secured to the core at about the center of their length, and a cap attached at the upper end of the core, substal' tially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a plume consisting of a rigid twisted core or support, and strands of wool, hair, or similar natural products secured to said core about the center of their length by the twist of the core, and a cap attached to the upper end .of the core or support, substantially as shown and described.
