Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,087, dated October 28, 1873 application filed August 13, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CONRAD GLANVILLE, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Pattern or Mode for Shoe-Top; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improvement in the patterns or modes which are used in cutting out the tops of ladies shoes. My invention consists in providing a pattern for this purpose, bymeans of which at least one-quarter can be cut in the width of the cloth more than by the old pattern, thus eflectinga saving of -material. This I do by cutting out the pieces with tops and bottoms on' the same line, and slightly altering the conformation of the heel portion, as is more specifically hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents my pattern as applied in marking out the tops across the width of a piece of lasting or serge. Fig. 2 shows the heelfoxing of the shoe applied to the upper.

A is the pattern. The front edge b c is made in the same form as the old pattern. The rear edge (I e is also made in the same form as the old pattern; but the edge from c to f is made so as to provide as little projection as possible at c-that is, the projection is reduced by curv= ing the edge cf upward from its middle, so as to unite the two edges at an angle farther to ward the top of the pattern, thus approximat ing the form of the rear edges (1 e f to the form of the front edge I) 0, so that in marking out the patterns the front edge I) 0 will fit closely, and with little waste, to the line marked for the back edges in the previous cut, as shown i at Fig.2. The heel-foxing H is made of leather,

and has its upper edge formed to overlap the edge e f, thus providing an economical pattern for forming the top and counter of a ladys shoe.

I am aware that shoe-uppers have been heretofore cut with the lines of one piece contiguous to the lines of another piece but these show the pattern requiring the alternate pieces to be inverted in relation to the others.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within-described pattern or method of cutting uppers for shoes, in which the rear edges of one piece are laid off against the front edge of the next, and the tops all laid in the same line, as set forth.
