l J. GOOD.
Kitchen and Ironing-Tables.
Patented,0Ct.-28,1873.
al lI lvl/@175011 UNITED STATES PATENT Curran.
JONATHAN GOOI), OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVEMENT IN KliCHEN AND IRoNING TABLES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,977, dated October 28, 1873; application filed I August 13, 1873.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JONATHAN GOOD, of the city of Lancaster, in the State of Penn'- sylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Kitchen and Ironing-Table, of which the following is a specilication. The accompanying drawing, with the letters of reference, will illustrate the construction and arrangement ofthe several parts described. v
Figure l is a perspective view of my table wit-hV the ironing-board detached, the tiltinglid or top of the box thrown back, and the slats turned out 5 also, the front side, 'a droplid, shown open. Fig. 2 shows the under side, and key and turning-plate of the ironing-board detached; Fig. 3, one of the detached side or extension wings. Fig. 4 is a front elevation ot' the ironing-board on its bracket and end slides.
The object is to utilize an ordinary kitchen or dining table so as to adapt it especially for ironinOv holdin o and dr Tin clothinn ti? 07 D The table B, with its beveled and boxedout ends O for thc reception of the ends of the ironing-board J when closed up, is somewhat hopper-shaped, the front portion being partially closed up with the board D, to which a door, E, is hinged to close up the balance. The ends C, boxed out, have on their inner face grooved side ledges f f, in which the tongued supports F F slide up and down vertically, and are held adjusted by a bindingscrew, s, on each end. To the support F there is an arm or bracket, G, hinged. This bracket is provided with a headed pin, H, and also a pin, g, to hold the ironing-board J in place. This board has a key-plate, I, on the under side, with aslot terminated with an open eye to receive the head H, when the sides of the slot are brought under the head to hold the board J to the bracket, from which it is readily detached, and on which it can be raised and lowered, or turned out for inserting garments, and turned in again and secured by the bindingscrew when adjusted by the side slides F F and supports. The under side of the table-top A shows cross-ledges O on each side, and raised brackets P on each side, in which are held by a pivot-pin the folding drying-rods Q. M lVI represent plates with an eye in the end for a hook on the plates L, shown on the extension-wing K of the table. The turn-slats N shown are for supporting the wings when turned out and under them. R shows a turn-holder to secure the dropping side lid E, when closed up and the top of the table turned down.
I am aware that ironing-boards are attached and combined in various ways to tables or otherwise, and that slotted side standards for adjusting the height in ironing-boards and for turning them is shown in several patents. Such I do not claim. But I am not aware of a plain-topped dining-table, with a tilting top, provided with hinged drying-slats under said lid, nor where the outer side of the boX consisted of a drop-lid to give easier access to the ironing-board, and a free space under the same, and yet constitute a spacious depository when closed up as a box-table suitable for general use as a kitchen or diningtable, made to be extended for special use. As a whole it is a desirable household article oi' furniture.
l. A box-table and ironing-board, J, combined, when said table is provided with a tilting lid or top, with the appliances shown and specified, said box having a drop-lid, E, in front, and the top of the ends O boxed out to receive the said ironing-board J, so as to be covered by the top, which board is :made detachable and adjustable, the whole substantiall y arranged as shown, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the under side of the hinged top of said box-table, the bracket-lugs P P, drying-rods Q Q Q, catch-plates M to receive the hooks L on the extension-wings K, together with the turn-holders N, all 'o n said under side ot the top, arranged in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JONATHAN GOOD.
