Loose-LEAF Brnnnn.
Ap licatio filed. are 18,
To all Quiz/omit may concern: v I I Be it known that l. Lnsrnn E. SHIPMAN',
a citizen of the Unitedfitates. residingfin v ginal perforations or notches intheleaves,
and the object of the invention is to provide easily operated means for confining the leaves reliably; which shall afford an exceptionally Wide range in the thickness of the mass accommodated; v permit leaves to b easily and quickly'inserted or removed 'and which shall be simple in construction and eminently durable. Y 1
The invention consistsfin certain novel features and details of construction andarrangenient byivhich the above objects are attained, to behe'reinafter described and claimed. I 1 The accompanying" drawings form a part of this specification and show an "approved formof the invention.
Figure 1 is a face vievvof the bindei' with the front cover turned to expose the bound leaves. j p I l The remaining figures are; onajlarger' scale. l igure 2 is a 'ansverse section through the basket the binder With the covers closed. The plane ofsection is indicated by the line ll: in-lfiigure l.
.lligui'e 3 is a corresponding section taken on the line H1 in Figure 1, and with a filling piece in position for service.
, Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through one end of the binding strips and' their connections, with the filling piece and leaves omitted. 4 V
Figure 5 is a plan View of one end portion of one of the binding strips.
Similar reference numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures.
leaves 4 to be inclosed. The leaves are shown as perforated on the back margin. as at 5,
1921, Serial no. 478,676.
but they may be notched in the usual manner if: preferred.
Attached to each cover is a binding strip shown as. but not necessarily' composed of two portions one} marked 7', adapted to lie upon the leaves and having the flexible hinge connectione to'the cover and the otherpo'r tron, marked 9, lying onthe outer face thereof and secured thereto by the hollow rivets '10 or otherwise. The margins of both ortions are notched as at 8 and 11. y The flexible means employed for binding the leaves and binding strips together are shown asf chains 12, one for each, end of the binding strips, passed.l'ooselythrough the portionfiof the bindingstrips is a lever 18 pivoted thereto at 1 1 and adapted to swing thereon. Each lever has a nose 15shaped to engage a link of the chain presented in the notch 11, by co-a-ction with the edges of the notch, and hold the chain reliably when. the
lever is swung into position with its edges parallel vviththe edges of the binding strip. A. boss 16 011 the-portion 9 engages a recess at'li, on the leverwhen'thuspositioned and of each chain 12 equipped With a needle 19 to. aidinthreading it through the perforations in-the leaves.
In the operation of binding the lfeaves the chains 12 are first locked at any convenient levers 13, and the free ends of thechains disengaged from the upper bindingstrip.
The leaves are then threaded on the chains and the latter inserted in the'notches of the upper binding strip which is pressed firmly. down on the mass of leaves while the chains are successively drawn taut and locked by swinging the upper levers 13 each into engagement with the link presented at the notch. The loose ends of the chains are folded upon the upper faceof the'binding strip and may beheld by slides 20 mounted I on such strip.
In case the'thickness'of the mass of leaves should be too great to permit the proper presentation of a linkto the lever, and too smallto be properly compressed by engaging the succeeding link, especially when.
and when introduced lies beneath the upper binding strip, as in Figure 3, and sup plies the required increasein. thickness.
The device permits the use of long claims with both ends detachably secured to the binding strips thus aiiordmg great latitude in capacity and permitting the addition of leaves to be made from front or baclr, or if. notched leaves are used they may be inserted or removed from any portion or the mass :by simply slackening the chains.
The chains and their locking. means are unaiiected by atmospheric or climatic conditions and afiord a strong, dura lebinding.
medium not liable to fracture or derange went and offer a simple and highly efficient n'ieans of great range for securely holding a small-or large mass of leaves or like matter with all the advantages ofierecl by'more complicated devices. The adjusting means are entirely exposed and. accessible.
Modifications may be made in the forms andproportions within wide limits without departing from the principle of the invention. 7 Other types of chains may be substituted for the referred form shown, and the locking means for engaging, the chains may be widely varied as found necessary or desiralole in adapting the invention to various conditionsof service'or price.
' I claim a 1. lnla device of thecharacter set forth, binding strips adaptedto receive between them the leaves to be bound andhaving marginal notches, chains each extended loosely through such leaves and binding. strips, and
means on both of said binding strips for detachably engaging links of said chains engaged in said notches.
2. In a device of the character set forth, a frontcoverand aback cover joined by a flexible back, a binding strip hinged to said front cover, a" binding strip hinged to said back cover, said strips having marginal notches, chains extending loosely through said strips and lying in such notches, and levers mounted on said strips adjacent such. notches, each adapted to engage detachably a link of the chain presented in its adjacent notch.
in a device of the character set forth, a front cover and a back cover joined by a flexible back, a binding strip hinged to said front cover, a binding strip hinged to said back cover, chains secured to one said strips and extended loosely through the leaves to be bound and through theother of saidv strips, movable means mounted on the latterfor detachably gripping said chains, and a filling piece hinged to one of said covers and lying between said leaves and back, adapted tobe inserted between said leaves andone oit' said binding strips.
4. In a device of the character set forth, binding; strips having marginal notches, chains extending loosely 7 through such notches, and levers pivotally mounted on said. binding strips adjacent such notches,
each adapted to co-act with the edges of its notch: and engage detachably a linl: 01. its chain.
5. In a device of the'character set forth, binding strips. having marginal notches, chain s extending loosely. through such notches, levers pivotally'mounted on said binding strips adjacent such notches, each adapted to co-act with the edges of its notch and engage detachably a link'of its chain, and means for holding said levers yieldingly in the engaged position.
in testimony that I claim the invention above-set torthl afiismy signature.
