Our invention relates to loose leaf binders in which thin, flat laterally resilient bands preferably made of highly tempered steel are attached to the covers with an intermediate leaf carrying portion spanning the space between the covers; the movement of the covers serving to flex the intermediateleaf holding portion so that the leaf body will be carried up from the back of the book when the covers are open, and oppositely into the back of the book when the covers are closed; and the objects of our invention are; first, to make a loose leaf binder in which the leaves will lie flat with a compact and easily manipulated means for detaching and adding leaves; second, to provide a clamping means on the covers for the edges of the leaf carrying bands; third, to positively guide the leaf carrying bands from the binding edge of the cover at a right angle thereto; fourth, to providev a passage along the cover outside the clamps for portions of plies of the leaf carrying bancs not contained vor embraced in the clamps; lifth, to make an economical and practical case to facilitate the assembling of the mechanical parts of the binder and to hold them in their operating position; sixth, to detachably connect a cross bar to the ends of the leaf carrying bands whereby they may all be adjusted simultaneously; seventh, to irovide a lock for the clamping mechanism and other features to become apparent from the description to follow.

The two opposite edges of the plate are provided with a plurality of narrow extensions 35 and 36, see Fig. 11, vwhich hav their extremities extending through registering slots provided therefor in the plate 22 and clamped on the under side of it to rigidly secure the two plates together.
filler strip 37 is provided between the cams 27 and gear 31 and the cover plate 34 to hold t-he plate 34 spaced from the clamp 29 a sucient distance to permit the free passage of one or more plies of the leaf carrying band 25. rThe filler 37 is retained in position by having an integral lateral extension 38 which enters the hollow cylindrical pivots 33 of the cams 27 and the gea-r 31. The securing of the cover plate 34 into position retains the parts 27, 28, 31 and 37 in their assembled positions. rEhe coverplate 34 is provided with perforations 34 to register with one end of the clamps 29 to enable viewing the different plies of the leaf holding band 25 during the assembling process.
To enable the operator to adjust simultan eously all the leaf carrying bands 25, the ends of the bands are detachably connected Vto a bar 39, see Figs. 1 and 3 to 7, by means of a clip 40. At a proper distance from their ends all the plies of the bands 25 are provided with a perforation 41 into which a small upward extending lug 42 provided on bar 39 projects. The bar 39 is provided with :r slot 39" to receive the ends of the bands 25, and to insure the lug 42 remaining in the perforations 41 the ends 43 of the U shaped clip 40 are also inserted into the slot 39 of bar 39 underlying the end of the bands 25. The clip 40 has a downwardly extending lug 44 which enters the perforation 41 of the bands 2. The clip 49 is made of spring' steel and to detach the same the part carrying the lug 44 is lifted by means of the upturned ears 44 to withdraw the lug 44 from the perforation 41 permitting the clip ends 43 to be withdrawn from the slot 39 in the bar 39, thus freeing the bands 25 so that they may be detached from the bar 39. It will be noted that the bar 39 connects the ends of all the bands 25 on one cover so that by manipulating bar o9 all of the bands 25 on the one cover 19 may be adjusted simultaneously. The perforations 41 are made larger than the lugs 42 and 44 to permit the several plies of the bands 25 to move longitudinallyv upon each other.
Then it is desired to lock the binder against manipulation by an unauthorized person, the locking mechanism illustrated in Figs. 13 to 19 is employed. The gear 31 is provided with two diametrically opposed upwardly extending lugs 45 arranged to extend into co-operating slots 46, provided in the floating ring 47 which is located within a hole 48 provided therefor in the filler strip 37. One side'of the ring 47 is provided with ratchet teeth 49 to co-operate with other ratchet teeth 50 on the inner periphery of the hole 48 in the filler strip 37. Y The ratchet teeth 49 and 50 are so arranged that when in engagement with one another. the Heating ring 47 be moved clockwise but .are prevented from being moved non-clockwise as viewed in Figs. 13, 14 and 17. A leaf spring 51 is mounted on the strip 37 to constantly tend to move the ring 47 in a direction to have the teeth 49 engage the teeth 50. Y
In Fig. 13 the ring 47 is shown as being held in a .position against the tension of spring 51 with its teeth 49 disengaged from the teeth 59 so that the lock is in its unlocked condition, and the ring 47 and lever are free to be moved in either direction to the left or to the right. 1t is obvious that the ring 47 is carried either in one direction or the other by the movement of the lever 32, since the lugs 45 on gear 31 integral with lever 32 extend into slots 46 of the ring 47. in F i0'. 14 the ring` 47 is shown as being forced. into a position by a spring 51 with its teeth 49 engaging the teeth 5() so that the lock is in its locked condition and the lever 32 is free to be moved to the left but is locked against movement to the right.
To move the ring 47 into its locked or unlocked position, a revolving cam disc 52 is employed which is pivoted about a pintle 53 pivotally mounted on the base plate 22, and projecting up tl'n'ough the keyhole in plate 34 where it is provided with the usual key-slot. The Acam pla-te 52 is `provided on its periphery withv the cam surface 55 arranged to engagethe extension 56 on the inner periphery of the ring 47, located diametrically opposite to the ratchet teeth 49, so that when the cam surface 55 is engaging` the extension 56 the teeth 49 on ring 47 will be 'disengaged from the teeth 50 on and lever are free tollO the strip 37. rlhus it is clear that ivlientlie plate 52 is turned to have its cam surface'y 55 engage the extension -56 on ring: et?, the parts will be in an unlocked position and when the plate is turned tosliave its cam surface 55 out oi enga ginent vwith thorsten:- sion 56 on ring el?, the parts Willrbe in lan unlocled position. In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers provided with metallic binding edges bent upwardly from the plane of the cover, a back hinged to the covers a short distance from the bent up binding edges, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjnstably connected to one of said covers and means on the cover for clamping the said bands edgewise, said hinges being so located with respect to the bent up binding edges that the portion of the leaf carrying bands between the binding edges of the covers will be forced downward into a curve when the covers are closed and will be forced upward into a curve when the covers are opened.
13. In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, clamping means on the cover for clamping the said strips edgewise and a key operated lock for locking said clamping means against operation.
14. In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, clamping means on the cover for clamping said bands edgewise in their adjusted position, means associated with said clamping means to prevent the bands from buckling when clamped and a key operated lock for locking said clamping means against operation. 15. In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers provided with metallic binding edges bent upwardly from the plane of the cover, a
back hinged to the covers a short distance from the bent up binding edges, thin flat springy leaf carrying bandsconnecting the covers and adjnstably connected to oneof said covers, clamping means on the cover for clamping the said bands edgewise, a key operated lock on the cover for locking said clamping means and said hinges being so located with respect to the bent up binding edges that the portion of the leaf carrying bands between the binding edges of the covers will be forced downward into a curve when the covers are closed and will be forced upward into a curve when the covers are opened.

In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting' the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, means on the cover for clamping the said strips edgewise comprising a pivoted swinging lever and a key operated lock on the cover for locking said lever against movement in one direction.

In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, clamping means on the cover for clamping said bands edgewise in their adjusted position comprising a pivoted swinging lever, a key operated lock on the cover for locking said lever against movement in one direction and means associated with the clamping means to prevent the bands from buckling when clamped.

In a loose leaf binder, suitable covers provided with metallic binding edges bent upwardly from the plane of the cover, a back hinged to the covers a short distance from the bent up binding edges, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, clamping means on the cover for clamping the said band edgewise comprising a pivoted swinging lever, a. key o perated lock on the cover for locking said lever against movement in one direction and said hinges being so located with respect to the bent up binding edges that the portion of the leaf carrying bands between the binding edges of the covers will be forced downward into a curve when the covers are closed and will be forced upward into a curve when the covers are opened.

In a loose leaf binder, covers, thin flat springy leaf carrying bands connecting the covers and adjustably connected to one of said covers, means for clamping the said bands edgewise and to prevent the bands from buckling when clamped comprising` a U shaped clamp member mounted on the cover to move laterally but held against movement longitudinally and means for moving' the clamp member tightly against the edge of the band.
