' This invention relates to means for securing papers and the like in folders and files, and providesifortheaforesaid purpose an improveddevice which is simple, cheaply and which when closed keeps the papers together, and when opened loosens them sufficientlyto allow said papers or the like to be 'completelyopened out without being un- 10 fastened, besides which said papers areenabled to be added to or removed from the folder or file with little'trouble.

According to the invention the improved device comprises a member formed to lie flat on the papers, and 'having an edge-containing one or more inwardly set portions adapted to bear against cord sections where they emerge from the'papers, saidjcord sections being attached to a backing, and beingmaintained under ressed grips in which said cord sections are secured towards their free ends. v p

In its preferred and simplest form, the device comprises a piece of springy wire 1 curved or bent near its ends to provide bows with return portions 2 at a distance from the main portion of the wire, the ends of the wire being portions 2 and being directed towards the ends of the device, or being bent to form grips ,3 for gripping the sections4 of the cord 4 near their loose ends. The springs comprised in the bow portions 2 of the device maintain the cord4'tight, and v the pressure of the latter against the inden tations 6 or portion 5, which act as levers 7 with the back edge of the wire containing same as a fulcrum, holds the wire flat and tightly against the papers and prevents it from turning over. i

In order to loosen the'securing means without unfastening same, the spring wire device 1 is raised onits back edge containing. the indentations 6dr the portion 5 (Fig. 3) followingwhich said back edge is moved in the direction indicatedin Fig. 4. During the first of said operations the back edge containing the indentations 6 or portion 5, serves as a fulcrum and the bow portions 20f the device are I compressed further allowing enough of the cord to slide over theindentations 6 or'portion 5to permit the device to be further turned over on the edge'carrying the grips?) and the entire wire 1 to finally come tol'the position shownv dotted in Fig. 1, in which position additional lengths 4 of cord, each equal approximately to the .dis tance "betweenindentations 6 or: portion 5 and grips 3, are'usable for the papers 7130: slide upon, so as to give a freeandflexible hinge which enables said papers tobe turned over easily and be opened out flat.

To close up the folder or file, it is only necessary to place the back edge containing the indentations 6 or portion 5 against the cord sections 4 where they emerge from the papers 7 and turn the device over on said edge back onto the papers, when it snaps down fiat on the latter against the action of the spring bow portions 2 and indentations 6 or portion 5, at the same time drawing the cord sections tight or taking up all slack therein, thereby again securing the papers tightly against the backing.

To enable papers or the like to be added to or removed from the folder or file, it is only necessary to release the ends of the cord sections 4 from the grips 3 on the device in which they are held.

In the forms of the device illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the main member consists of a section 10 of rigid sheet material, the back edge of which contains one or a plurality oi inwardly offset portions 11 which are the equivalents of the portion 5 or the indentations 6 of the forms illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, the spring grips 3 in the forms shown in Figs. 6 and 7 being formed on a member 12 preferably of Wire attached to the sheet material member, by any suitable means, and formed so that said grips 3 are opposite and normally tend to spring away from the back ese last described forms of the device are used and operate in a similar manner to the forms previously described.

What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of Amer- 10a. is v 1. A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files comprising a backing, a cord, a member having spring means and formed to lie flat upon the papers and having an edge containing indented portions ada ted to bear against the sections of said cord where they emerge from the papers, spring grips upon said spring means, said cord being attached to said backing and be ing maintained under tension by said spring means and said sections of said cord being secured adjacent their free ends by said grips.

2. A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files as set forth in claim 1 wherein the spring means of said member having an edge containing the indented portions comprise spring ends spaced from said edge and said spring grips are positioned upon said ends.

A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files as set forth in claim 1 wherein the spring means of said member having an edge containing the indented portions comprise spring ends spaced from said edge, said ends being turned outwardly so as to form said grips for the sections of said cords at the inner ends of the turned portions.

A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files as set forth in claim 1 wherein said member with the edge containing the indented portions is formed of wire, the ends of said wire being bent so as to form spring bow portions extending away from said edge and the extreme ends of said wire being bent back upon said wire so as to form said grips.

5. A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files as set forth in claim 1 wherein said member is formed of Wire and the extreme ends thereof are doubled upon themselves so as to form said spring grips.

6. A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files as set forth in claim 1 wherein said member having the edge containing the indented portions is formed of rigid sheet material and resilient members are attached to said rigid sheet material spaced from said edge and said spring rips are provided upon said resilient mem ers.

7. A device for securing papers and the like in folders and files comprising a backing, a cord having a plurality of sections, a member having spring means and formed to lie flat upon the papers and havin an edge containing an indented portion a apted to bear against one of said sections of said cord where 1t emerges from the papers, grips u on said spring means, said cord being attac ed to said backing and being maintained under tension by said spring means to which said sections are secured adjacent their free ends by said grips.
