To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Vieron C. Rniirnnne, a 4citizen of the United States, residing` geina, inthe county 'of rice andv State oit l/Visconsin, have invented a: new anduseful Combination Door Lo'clr, oi" `Which the following is a specification.
The device forming` the subject' inatter oi this application isa lock, and the iiif vention aims to provide novel means Where` by the bolt of the lock may` be controlled through the instrumentality or. al periii'uta'- tion mechanism. Another object of the inventionl is to provide novel means whereby the bolt oit the lock may be manipulated from the inside oie the door` even though the bolt may be held against movement troni the outside of the door. 'lt is Within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices oir' that type to which the invention appertains.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view,
which will appear' as the descriptionpro ceeds, the invention, resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details scribed and claimed, it being` luiiderstornl that, Within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be' made without de-` partingv from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 shows in elevation, one side 'of a door carryinga lock constructed in cordance with the invention; Figure 2 an elevation showing the opposite side of? the door and the lock #from that depicted iii Figure 1; Figure 3 is an elevation showing a portion of the casing oit the lock, and parte therein, sundry elements appearing' in section; Figure fl is a section on the line ll-t; of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a section on the,` line 5 5 of Figure 1; Figure @is a section" on the line 6--6 oicgFigure 1. An opening 32' isjitashioiied inthe :ii-in 16 and receives, pivotally, across piece 3353 on theinner end of a holtl. adiuated to con operate with the Akeeper 3, the head o'fthe bolt 3ft being" slidable in a guide to onV the face` plate e. The hea-d ofthe bolt 84 is provide'd'ivith stops 441- ivhich, enacting with the trame liinit ythe forward movement of thebolt. iii. linger 36 projects from the hub 18 oiQ the arni 16 and isensjaeedbv a i nf i iet" spring tongue 37 mounted to slide on a rib 38 projecting from the plate 4, one end of the tongue being'secured at 39 to the plate f4, the plate having a projection 40 which,
.overhanging the tongue 37 holds the tongue for `tiexu're, under the action of the finger 36. A detent 41 is mounted pivotally at 42 on the plate 4 and has a shoulder 43 adapted to cooperate with the notch 31 in the arni 16. The.detent 41 has a linger 45 which projects' beyond theshoulder43. The
back plate 7 carries a bearing -46 wherein atubular` shaft 47 F'isfjournaled, the shaft having an arni 48, operating behind the detent 41 and' adapted to cooperate with the `finger in a way which will be set forth hereinafter. A compression `spring 49 "cooperateswith the frame 6 and with Vthe detent 41 to swing the detent upwardly until the detent abuts ,against the tubular shaft 47, as shown in Figure 3. A spindle 56 is'journaled and held for rotation in the plate 11 and casries rvan outer turning head 51, the spindle being held` removably, but against rotation, in a rectangular opening 52 in the shaft 47. leg stop 53 projects from the plate 4 and is adapted to be engaged by the arni' 4Sl on the shaft 47, when they guideway 64 `formed in the plate 4. On its outer surface, the plate 4 is supplied with a rib 59.` There is a slot 56 in the rib 59. 41 stud 57 projects from the head 101 and is movable in the slot 58. At its outer end, the stud 57 is supplied with the a knob 60.
i A foot `piece 61 is disposed between the knob' 60 and the rib 59 and is slidable in a superiicial` slot 62 formed in the rib, the.
foot piece being carried by the stud 57. The slide rod 551s supplied with projections 65. j
the projections on the slide rod 55' may inove through the slots, it being possible, thus, Vfor the rod 55 tohave longitudinal movement. The tace plate 4 has an opening 70 through which the tumblers 66 are exposed. There is a iiange 71 on the plate 4 at one end of the opening 70,`the flange carrying an index `72 adapted to cooperate with characters `on the tumblers 66. A retaining bar 74 is secured at 75 to the inner surface of the plate 4 and holds the spring brakes 76 adapted to bear on the periphery of the tuniblers66. n
Let it' be supposed that selected ones of the characters 73 on the tuinblers 66 have been lined up'with the index 72 so that the slots 69 in the tuinblers are alined, the slide rod 55 having been moved to the right- (Figure 3),until the yprojections 65 are located in the recesses 68, motion being imparted to the slide rod through the instrumentality oi' the knob v60 on thestud 57. The projection 56 on the slide rod 55 has been moved so far to the right that the spring 49. has raised the detent 41 until the shoulder on the detent is out of the vpath olf the upper end oi the arm 16.V When the knob 14 is rotated, thev cross pin 2O in the neck 17 cit 'the knob being received in the seat 19 ci* the hub 18 of the arrn`16 imparts swinging movement to the arm 16,` the arin 16 retracting the locking bolt 64, `the spring 37 serving te `return the locking bolt to the position shown in Figure '3, when the knob 14 is released. VVihen the knob 27 is turned, the sleeve 22 is rotated, and swinging movenient is imparted to the'arin 16, since the sleeve 22 is integral with the hub 16 ot the arm. The bolt 34 in view of the foregoing inay be retracted troineither side or the door. 'i
Y Suppose, however that it is desired to loclt the bolt 34 vin advanced position. Then, the slide rod 55 is moved to the lett (Figure 3) land the tuinblers 65 are rotated, the tuinblers cooperating with the projections 65 on the sliderod -55 to hold the slide rod in the position to which it may have been advanced, toward the le'lt (Figure 3). l/Vhen the slide rod 55 is moved to the left, the projection 56 on the slide rod engages the detent 41 and swings the: Ad'etent 41 downwardly, the shoulder 43 on the detent engaging the arrn 16, within the notch 81, and the spring 49 being compressed. The
yarni` 16 cannoty now swing counter-clockwiseligure 3) and the' bolt64 is held in advanced position, inr engagement with the keeper lB'on the jarnb 2. When it is desired to set the locking boltv 34 tree, the properV combination isset up by alining certain ofthe characters 73 on the tuinblers 66 with the index 72, the slots 69 vin the tumblers then being alined, to receive the lprojections 65 on the slide rod 55, whereupon the slide rod may be moved to the right, into the position shownfin Figure 3, the Spring 49 swinging the detent 41 upwardly, and setting the arin 16 free, so that :ee-eenen e 3 downwardljyxy until the shoulder 13 on the d tent is engaged with the uppe.` end oi the arni 1G, the erm 16 thus being held ui rinse swinging movement and it being inipos sible to retract the bolt 34: by either of the vblers 66, and release the slide rod because the tumblers are accessible 'troni the outer side of the door only. ln order to nctuate A und retract the bolt 34, under the conditions above specified, the knob 2? is pulledoutwardly, the arni 16 moving to the" right (Figure G) along with the lrnob 27, because the sleeve 28 of the knob is connected at to the sleeve 22 on the hub 18 of the arin V 16. lWhen the arno 16 is cefrried tothe right (Figure 6) a short distance., the seat 19 in the hub 18 of the arin 1G is disengaged from the cross pin 20 in the noch 1'? of the knob 14, and, at the seine tiine, ythe erin 1G is in'oved to the right igure o) until it is clear of the detent the arm 16 sliding on the cross heed 33 of the orni 16. When the armi@ has been niojved to the right (Figure 6) until it is clear of the detent 411, the knob 27 maybe rotated to swing the arm 16 counter clockwise (ligure 6), thereby to effect a retracting of the locking bolt 34. i
The cross pin 20, carried by the knob lll, cooperating with the seat 1,9 in the hub 1S of the erm 16, forros e connection between the knobs 27 end 14:, by wey ot the sleeves 18 und so that the arm 16 may be swung counter-clockwise, and the bolt 34 retracted,` troni either sideo'l the door, when the detent l1 is in the reised position shown in Figure 3 and is out oi: engagement with tliearin 16.
ln Figure 8, the plate, corresponding to the plete 4, is marked by the numeral the i lianges appearing at 91 and corresponding to the parte 54m rThe tuinblers ere inorlred by the numerul 99;. llhe slide, corresponding to transversely `slide 93, the spring being held in TEigure d bauppose, further th t it oethe part 55 is shown et fr latch 9 mounted for reciproeetion in the lo reef, und hns pr jections lo correspondi 'o the ports o5 and a cooperate with the tninblers. The l advanced by aspring 96 located within in place by closure 97 in the slit. 93 or in any oth H suitable wey. Suppose that the tumblerM have been rotated so that 'the notches the tumblers are not in elinen ent sho sii-ed tol niove tl islide to theieft, troni the position slioi in `liigure to ellect o. locking operation. The projections 195 on the latch 94C are beveled, und Adie latch muy be pushed to the lett (Figure 8), the
`by enabling the projections to engege with the tuinblers, and to prevent the slide 93 troni moving to the right. rldhe op crater, in 'View of the foregoing, has `at his commend, a means whereby the device may be locked without setting up on the trunblers.y such a combination will eline the notches in theturoblers.
