Specification of Letters Patent. Paiggnted ,A n- 29 1922 aApplication filed April l22, 1921. Serial No. 463,511.
To all w/lomit'may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI Vnrrnn. a citizen of France, and-a residentof the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronxand State of New York, have invented a new and. improved Closure Fastener. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in closure fasteners, and it pertains more particularl to a closure fastener for doors.
it is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a closure fastener which is simple in construction and comparatively cheap in cost of manufacture.
it is a further object of the invention to provide a closure fastener which is so constructed as to prevent a springing of the door and amb relatively one to the other in the manner commonly known as jimmying.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a closure fastener which may be operated from the inside without the use of a key and from the outside by the use of a key. I I
lVith the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly broken away showing the attachment of a closure fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the closure fastener;
Fig. 1 is an edge view of the closure fastener keeper;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates the door and 1 designates the jamb. The reference character 13 designates the closure fastener and the same is secured to the door by means of screws or the like 12. p
The closure fastener 13 comprises a housing 14, and mounted in said housing is a spindle 15, said spindle having a knob 16 projecting from one side of the housing.
The spindle 15 is projected as indicated by the reference character 17 from the other side of the housing, and is connected with a suitable cylinder lock mechanism 18, the
specific construction of which forms no particular vpart'of the present invention. The
spindle 15 'is .mounted upon a spindle hearing 15 and said spindle bearing 15 is notched as indicated at 16'. Mounted upon the extension 17 of the spindle is a pin 17 and said pin operates in the slot 16 of the spindle bearing to prevent the spindle making a complete rotation.
Carried by the spindle 15, is a substantially circular member 18, said circular memher being shaped to provide a flat portion This circular member 18 is shown in F 1g. 2 as having oppositely disposed marg nal flanges 20 throughout its curved marginal edge, the portion 19 thereof being without flanges as indicated by the reference character 21 in Fig. 2.
The reference character 25 designates the keeper, and said keeper is provided with a slot 26. The ends of the slot 26 are enlarged as indicated at 28, and the side walls of the slot 26 are undercut as indicated by the reference character 29 to provide two flanges 27.
The device operates in the following manner:
lVhen the door is in the closed position, the latch member 18 is rotated either by the knob 16 or by inserting a key in the cylinder lock 18. As this latch member is turned the flanges 20 pass behind the flanges 2. of the keeper 25.
By this construction it will be seen that if it is desired. to open the door 10 with the latch member in the closed position, the latch member 18 engages the side edges of the slot 26 of the keeper 25 and prevents the door from being opened.
If, on the other hand, an instrument is inserted between the door and the jamb to spring the same, the flanges 20 of the latch member 18 will engage the rear wall of the flanges 27 of the keeper 25 and will prevent the springing of the door and jamb rela tive one to the other and will in turn prevent jimmying of the door.
The reference character 10 designates a sliding latch and when the latch 18 is in its locked position, this sliding latch may be reciprocated to a point where it will move in the path of the end 41 of the flanges 20 and prevent rotary movement of the latch 18 to a position where it will completely disengage the keeper 25.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel form of closure fastener, the use of which prevents jimmying of the door since the door and j amb cannot be sprung relative one to the other to permit of a disengagement of the latch with its keeper BX- eept through the operation of the latoh in the prescribed manner.
I claim- A closure fastener comprising a housing, a keeper provided with a curved slot sub stantially T-shaped in cross section a latch member rotatably mounted in the housing, said latch member comprising a substantially circular member having a flat side the curved portion 01" the body of said latch member having oppositely disposed continu' ous flanges adapted to be received Within the T-shaped slot of the keeper to prevent relative movement of the housing relative to the keeper, and a sliding latch member adapted to be moved into the path of the rotating latch member and engage the flat side there of to limit the rotating movement of the latch member relative to the keeper and the housing, substantially as described.
