One Vof the features ot my new lock is a locking member in the form of a. disk which is preferably Banged and made of hardened steel. When this disk is in locking' position,v

Provision is made whereby the locking disk is positively locked 1n actuated position, sov
that it cannot be operated by merely turning the knob. It is first necessary to manipulate the knob in a prescribed manner to unlock the disk for rotation. This will be specifically referred to later on,

On the inner end of the shaft 10 is rigidly mounted a connecting piece 11. The disk 5 is provided with an opening 12 of a shape .to receive the connecting piece 11. To permit a slidable movement of the connecting piece 11 without breaking its operative connection with the locking disk 5, --the connecting piece is provided `with. a-pair'of axial flanges 13. The coil-spring 141 may be -conveniently located in the lrecess 15 of the casing C, so that one end of the spring bears against thecasingand the other end against disconnecting* piece 11, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The interlocking engagement between the disk 5 and the keeper 19 resists any attempt of a person to force the lock by pressure against the door. The disk 5, it will be observed, is a passive disk. That is to say, it is not springactuated and remains in whatever positionit is turned by hand until moved out of that position by the knob or key. Furthermore, the knobv 9 and key-actuatedmember 18 are in axial alignment with the disk5 and directlyv connected thereto wit-hout any intermediate driving connections such as gears and the like. The direct operative connec-- tions for the disk and the absence vof all. springs' (with the exception of the small` spring 14) render the lock exceedingly simple and compact.
Any suitable means may be provided vfor limiting the rotary movements of the locking disk 5. In the drawings I have shown the disk provided with an arcuate slot 23,V in which engages stop 211 carried by the rasingC. For convenience of manufacture,
the stopl 9A- may be a screw or bolt which necting piece l1, whereby the disk 5 and the knob 9 are normally locked against rotary movement. 'In order, therefore, to turn the` disk 5 by means of the knob 9, it is first necessary to pull the knob out, so as to movev the lug'16 out of the way of the lug 17, as shown in Fig. 6. Then the knob is free to be turned and thel locking disk 5 may be moved intov the desired position. As soon as the knob 9 is released, the spring 10l pushes. the connecting piece 11 inwardly, and thus throws the lug 16 again into `lock, ing relation. to the lug 17.` In order words. the disk 5-s always locked in one position or the other by the lugs 16 and'li', so far asl the knob 9 is concerned, and it is necessary, in the preferred construction shown, to pull the knob out before it can be turned.V This prevents an unauthorized person from unlocking the disk 5 fromthe outside by an' attempt to turn it otherwise than through the element 18.
