Patented Nov. 28, 1922.
NHTED r'ra GEORGE E. HITCHCOCK, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TO MIYER BROWN, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
BOX OPENER.
Application filed May 27, 1920. Serial No. 384,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HITCH- 0001;, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in box openers.
Much difficulty and annoyance is encountered in removing the covers of tin boxes. Some have used a lever, and others a cam for this purpose, but these have lacked in simplicity, and have presented objectionable ends which project, where they are in danger of tearing things, or being torn from thebox; and, furthermore, they are in the way in packing and shipping the goods.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple device for loosening and removing the covers of these boxes without the objectionable features hereinbefore mentioned; and this invention consists in a plate slidably connected with the box and adapted to fit under the edge of the cover, and provided with a handle approximately flush with the bottom of the box and projecting slightly therebeyond, where it can be easily manipulated to raise the cover of the box.
It further consists in the foregoing features in connection with the side of the box having a depressed portion in which the opener fits and slides, the edges of which depression are parallel and serve as guides for the opener to confine its movement to a straight endwise movement, and a pin which extends through a vertically-disposed slot in the opener.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a View in side elevation;
of Genesee and State Fig. 2 is a section. A, represents a box, and B is the cover.
The numeral 1 represents the opener. This is fitted in a depression 2 in the side of the box, preferably, so that its outer surface is flush with the surface of the outer side of the box. The opener has an elongated slot 3 extendin vertically therein, and a pin or rivet extends through this slot into the box, thus holding the slide in position, and admitting of a limited sliding movement thereto, while the edges 4 of the depression form guides for the edges of the opener.
This opener extends substantially the width of the box itself, and under the lid when in its normal position, and its lower end is curled up or crimped to form a thumb-piece or handle 6, which projects out laterally opposite the bottom, and perhaps a trifle beneath the plane of the latter, so that it is in convenient position to be pushed by the operators thumb or finger against the box cover or lid to loosen and remove the latter.
In this way, I have provided a very simple and inexpensive device for the purpose of loosening and opening tight fitting metallic box covers.
I claim:
The combination with a box and a cover, the side of the box having an indentation to form vertical guides, of a slide fitted to move between the guides and in substantial parallelism with the face of the box the slide having a slot and a handle projection,
and a pin or rivet attached to the box and extending through the slot in the slide.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE E. HITOHCOCK.
