Application filed February 6, 1922. Serial No. 534,358.
T 0 all 'wlwmvlt may 00mm: Be it known that l, Jicssn Mnnnox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moberly, in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Antifreezing Attachment for Automobile Radiators. of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment to'replace the usual radiator drain cock and which will prevent the drain from filling with sediment and from freezing. It is a further object of my invention to provide a drain cock which can be operated by the driver of the car without lea-v ing his seat, and while the car is running. It is also my object to provide the novel combination and arrangement of parts here manifold to prevent freezing of the conduit opening out of the radiator and leading to the drain cock. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in. the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspectiveview of the device applied to an automobile radiator and engine;
Qis an enlarged elevational view of my invention, a portion of the radiator being shown in section;
Fig. 3' is a top plan of the invention show ing the means for heating the T- connection with gases supplied from the exhaust manifold; I i
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view through the drum 18; and
Fig. 5 is a detail elevational View of drum l8.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the views.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings I provide in place of the usual drain cock opening out of the usual radiator outlet connection 1, the elbow drain pipe 2 connected by the pipe 3 with the T-pipe connection 4 which is in communication with the pipe 5 and drain cock 10. The pipe 5 is connected by a suitable pipe coupling connection 7 with pipe 6, which is attached to the elbow pipe 8, which opens into the usual outlet connection pipe of the automobile engine. Drain cock 10 has its valve key 11 attached to an operatin rod 12, which latter member is provided wlth a handle portion or finger positioned within easy reach ofthe driver of the car, as illustrated in Fig.1.
in operation the cooling fluid flows through elbowpipe 52, pipe 3, T-pipe connection l, pipe 5, pipe 6 and elbow 8 .into the outlet connection pipe 9 of the engine, thus addingto the circulation capacity of the car and preventing the usual filling up of the drain cock with sediment and also preventing it from freezing. The drain cock 10 which is attached to the T-pipe connection i is operated by the operating rod 12 and by the driver of the car without leaving his seat, the operating rod 12 extends to the dash of the car.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4C and 5, I may provide theseries of pipes 15, 16 and 17 opening out of exhaust manifold 1d and conducting the heated exhaust gases to the drum 18 which encircles the T-pipe connection 4:, whereby to heat the water at that point and positively prevent the freezing of the fluid in the pipe.
I may apply the invention to any type of car, but it is primarily intended for the particular type of car illustrated in the drawings.
Among the advantagesof my invention are the following:
That the driver can drain hiscar while sitting in his seat and while running and saves him twenty to twenty-iive minutes time. is not exposed to cold and does not soil his clothes while drainage is being started.
That the circulation is kept going so that the drain pipe cannot freeze.
That the attached heat pipe immediately thawsout ice in the drain cock and pipe in two or three minutes that accumulates there while car is standing.
That the circulation and heat pipe will not allow any freezing while car is running against cold winds.
Thatno sediment can collect in cock and is always free to drain.
What I claim is '1. In an anti-freezing attachment for automobile radiators, the combination of means forming a continuous conduit from the bottom of the radiator outlet connection to a point in the upper portion of the outlet connection pipe, and a drain cock opening out of said conduit.
2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of an elbow pipe opening out of the conventional radiator outlet con nection, a pipe connected to said elbow, a
.T-pipe connection in communication With said pipe, a drain cock connected with the T-pipe connection, a plurality of pipes in communication with the T-pipe connection, a pipe coupling connecting said pipes and an elbow connection connecting the upper end of the upper pipe with the conventional outletconnection pipe of the engine,
3. Iii-combination with the apparatus described in claim 1, means for conducting exhaust (gases to the continuous conduit first na1ned,and means for retaining the heated JESSE MADDOXQ
