COOLING-SYSTEM DRAIN COCK.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for cooling systems, and particularly to devices for draining the radiators of such systems.
Une object of the invention is t-o provide means for effecting the quick and easy draining of the radiator of an automobile, without the usual inconvenient method of reaching for the drain cock, with the resultant soiling or" the hands and clothes of the operator.
Another object is to provide means for operating the drain cock of an automobile radiator, from the driver-s seat, whereby such radiator may be fully drained while the car is in motion.
Another object is to provide such means which includes means for cleaning out the port of the drain cock, as well as the opening in the radiator, water pump, or other portion of the cooling system, such operation being accomplished from the same point as that from which the system is drained.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the drain cock viewed in a plane at right angles to Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, represents the lower portion of an automobile radiator, having the drain cock 11 connected therewith. Secured to the lower portion of the drain cock, and erA tending laterally therefrom, is a clamp i2, the outer end of which receives and retains the adjacent end of the tube 13. Slidable through the instrument-board 1li, of the automobile, is a rod 15, the end adjacent the driver being provided with a knob 16, while the other end is slightly enlarged and elongated, as at 1T, and formed with a longitudinal bore 1S, which is angular in cross section. Disposed for slidable movement in said bore 18 is the angular end 19, of the rod section 20, whose other end is connected with a. third rod section 21, by means of the universal point 22. The other end of the rod section 21 is secured to the handle 23, of the plug valve 9%, of the drain cock 11. By grasping the knob 16, and rotating the rod sections, the valve plug of the drain cock may be opened or closed, at the will of the 1926. Serial No. 113,570.
operator. Slidably disposed through the port of the drain cock, and adapted to be moved to clean out any sediment which might have accumulated in the opening of the radiator bottom, is a pin or needle 25, and connected to the lower end of this pin is the adjacent end of a wire 26, which is eX- tended longitudinally through the beforen'ientioned tube 13. The tube 13 is continued upwardly, in parallel relation to the rod section 20, and terminates opposite the enlarged end of section 15, in a similarly enlarged portion 27. In this portion 27 is slidably disposed the end of the rod 28, and connected to the end of said rod, within the bore of the portion 27, is the adjacent end of the said wire 26. The other end of the rod 28 is turned angularly, at 29, and provided with a terminal eye 30 receiving the adjacent portion of the rod therethrough, said eye being rendered operable 1n conjunction with the rod 15, by the collars 31 secured to the rod 15, at opposite sides of said eye.
It will be noted that the lower end of the needle 25, where it is connected to the wire 26, is extended angular-ly, so that it is arranged directly beneath the outer end of the clamp 12.
By reasons of the fact that the said needle practically iills the lower portion of the outlet opening of the drain cock casing, two laterally directed outlet openings 11 are formed in this casing, a short distance below the seat of the plug valve 24, so that when the needle is lowered 'to its extreme depressed position, as shown in Figure 1, of the drawing,y said needle will not obstruct the passage of the liquid from the casing.
vWhen it is desired to drain the radiator, the driver simply grasps the knob 16 and rotates the rods connected therewith, whereby the drain cock will be opened. Should the water not drain out as quickly as it should, the operator again grasps the knob 15 and pulls the same toward him, and then pushes it away from him, whereby to cause the reciprocation of the rod section 15, with the result that the collars 31 will cause the rod 28 to be reciprocated and the pin or needle to move through the ports of the drain cock casing and of the plug valve therein, so that any clogging by reason of collected sediment, in the bottom of the radiator, may be properly and quickly removed, and the water permitted to flow freely Jrein the radiator.
